I would not call us picky travelers or difficult to please. We’ve had wonderful cruises on Carnival, Princess, of course Disney and even Royal. We decided to try NCL Encore for the first time over Thanksgiving and we are never cruising with them again.

I’ll start with the good. The ship was nice and it was clean. There were some fun activities like the VR arcade and Lazer Tag for kids. The MDR food was pretty good, and the Indian on the buffet was also good. The paid French restaurant was pretty good.

Now for the bad. Oh boy.

First, all three of my children (11,8,4) HATED the kids club. They said it was boring, very little supervision, kids just running around everywhere, little organization. My 4 year old refused to go after the second day. He would panic when we just walked by the kids area. We were so concerned we talked to the directors and asked if anything had happened as he has never acted this way about any kids camp ever, and they just shrugged and said they weren’t aware of anything. Obviously this meant my husband and I weren’t able to enjoy the adult activities on the ship, which was a huge bummer.

If you weren’t lining up for the kids club 15-20 minutes before 7pm, there wouldn’t be space for your child. My older two kids said they would give the kids camp another chance, but were not able to because by the time we showed up just 5-10 minutes after it opened, it was full and we were number 100 something in a virtual queue to get in. Never experienced anything like this on any other cruise line.

The ship was extremely overcrowded for what they offered. Getting into shows was near impossible, MDR reservations were booked out days in advance unless you wanted to eat at 9:30pm. Impossible to finds seats for buffet, no chairs available on the pool deck, etc.

Our balcony stateroom was TINY, the closet could not fit our suitcase at all. We booked two balcony staterooms next to each other, and they refused to open the dividers between the two rooms for us. They said it was a “safety issue” And that this was a rule across the entire NCL fleet.

They only clean the rooms once per day. This wouldn’t be so bad if they would allow you to choose the time like morning or dinner, but they said they only clean the rooms until 4pm and then after that they only provide towels, or clean for an emergency. This meant that by the time we got back from an excursion at the beach, everything was covered in sand and we had sand in our bed from walking in our room covered in sand until the next day when they would come to clean again. I did request a bed change once after 4pm when my youngest accidentally knocked an entire cup of soda onto my bed, soaking the sheets and pillow. They were very rude about having to come and change the sheets.

No self service laundry and the laundry offered by the ship was extremely expensive. 5 or 6 dollars for each single shirt, 7 or 8 dollars for each pant. With 5 of us that would obviously add up to a lot of money.

No soda machines. If you wanted a soda outside of meal times, you had to go to bar and ask for a cup.

No free room service. Even continental breakfast cost extra, and if you wanted a soda from room service you were charged even if you had the soda package.

No included food on the pool decks. We went to the pool around 11am, thinking we would swim for an hour or so, grab some lunch on the deck and keep swimming. Nope. There was a bar but the only food available was at the diner which is not free and ended up tasting terribly.

There was never any seating at the buffet. We ended up having to walk from the buffet to the pool because that was the only seating we could ever find. Extremely long lines.

No bedrails for my 4 year old who slept on the converted sofa. He fell off the bed twice in the middle of the night :(

TERRIBLE internet. We paid extra for us to have high speed internet, thinking that since they had Starlink it would be worth it. It was the worst internet on any cruise I’ve been on, even ones that did not have Starlink. It simply would not work 50% of the time. Not slow, but just flat out would not work. There was an over 12 hour window where my husband and I could not even load our emails, and with one of our dogs sick with the dog sitter this was really stressful.

I feel like *everything* cost extra. Even really old movies in the stateroom cost money to watch. The only free movies were ones they played on loop at certain times.

My kids all said this was their least favorite cruise they’ve ever been on. My husband and I completely agreed. I had such high hopes for NCL but it just wasn’t for us. I would much rather cruise Carnival or Princess or of course Disney. Celebrity is the next line I really want to try.

Anyway, I know a lot of people really enjoy NCL and some of this may have been ship specific, but just figured I would share my experience.

Celebrity has included continental room service breakfast, but a $9.95 fee for anything else. And all the other cruise lines I've been on (HAL, RCCL, Celebrity) charge for sodas (or other for-fee drinks) with room service even if you have a beverage package.

I love Celebrity (and DCL), but I don't get the appeal of eating in my room - I do that in my studio apartment - so I don't order room service. But I wanted you to be aware that charging for for-fee drinks with room service is pretty standard.

We will be on NCL Breakaway in February. I am sorry that it was an awful cruise. Most of these comments will not impact us. I never expect to do laundry on the cruise. I always expect internet to be horrible at see. That is too bad about the kids clubs. My kids are 8 and 13 so maybe it will be better for them. We will be in the Haven so hopefully that will help.

Depends on the kids I guess. My kids wanted nothing to do with the kids clubs on either our Disney or HAL cruise. But we cruised to spent time WITH our kids, not away from them.
Yes, Free Style dining is the pits. We waited 90 minutes our first night. Now it appears they have changed the reservation system in the MDR. They didn't allow you to make reservations more than 24 hours in advance when we cruised NCL. We would make our next nights dinner reservation when we arrived for dinner the night before. And we always requested the same server team. It worked pretty well that way. Funny, the extra cost dining rooms you could make your reservation as far in advance as you wanted.

I think being in the Haven will make a big difference from what I’ve heard. I hope you have a great cruise!

Hmm. Well a lot of that is relevant to you only, but I'm sorry that it impacted your experience and you had such a terrible time.

I don't know what to say about their club. My kids said it wasn't very fun compared to other lines but at the same time they were there 15 min prior waiting to get in. Their choice. We also sailed on spring break so the wait time wasn't entirely unexpected. I'm surprised you found yours that full and will probably not book the Encore or do more research at least.

The single cabin service is a bummer, but if beach sand is an issue then you could have used the poolside showers or mitigated it some other way. Unfortunately that's the trend post COVID on mainstream cruise lines.

Do they even have bed rails for the sofa beds on Disney? Never even thought to check but my kids have fallen off the bed enough times at home they have learned not to and never have on a ship. Can you blame NCL for bed rails? That's debatable but I can understand it influencing your decision to sail then again.

Food. I've never experienced what you did buffet wise or MDR. It was worse on Carnival for us. But it does sound like your sailing was very full. Anecdotal reports of NCL freestyle dining say that even if you can't make a reservation waits are hardly ever more than a few minutes for the MDR. Also they have more than one included dining room. You should have had specialty dining included if you selected that with FAS, so your food experience shouldn't have been all bad. Poolside food isn't a concern for us, but yeah there's sometimes burgers and fries by the bar area depending on the ship. It's only for short hours miss it if you don't know about it.

Getting soda from the bar isn't that big a deal, especially if I want a drink and the bar is around the corner vs Disney I'm in the theater and I want to get a soda I have to preplan or make my way to the complete opposite side of the ship.

We love to unplug so no wifi not an issue for us. Again, sorry this was so frustrating for you.

It's just one of those things where yeah now you know NCL isn't for you.

25% of the Freestyle MDR's dining times can be reserved prior to the cruise, but you have to do it via chat or by calling. After that you can make them as soon as you board or just go to one of the MDR's and hope there is a table for the time you want to eat.

We did the Haven last year and it is a completely different universe compared to the rest of the ship. Except the kids club—DD9 hated the kids club as well and did not want to go back after one visit. But the Haven is bananas good—I would not do a non Haven cruise on NCL.

This is 100% a mileage will vary thing.

I have sailed 7 Celebrity and 1 Disney now. I have met people that swear by NCL, HAL, RC, Princess, Celebrity, Disney and Carnival. While also running into many that are never again for each line as well. Each line offers a vastly different experience. MSC is another one that is hotly debated. My travel agent refuses to book them, but one of the only cruise vloggers I watch absolutely loves MSC and the budget friendly nature. Virgin is a new player that is getting similar treatment of absolutely love vs absolutely hate.

People sharing their experiences and what made the cruise positive or negative FOR THEM is important. It lets people know and gauge the quality or lack there of, of various aspects of a line. Some people wouldn't give two hoots about freestyle dining, other people would shy away because it would be too much work for their vacation.

I was warned away from NCL by my agent because of what I like about Celebrity. So I have never seriously considered them despite NCL probably being the best line for solo travels.

I've only cruised NCL once, but most of the stuff you complained about you would have known with some research prior to the cruise.

As far as laundry Royal gives you a laundry stuff bag. As much as you can stuff in for 35 bucks. I've read that NCL does the same. I honestly loved it. DCL actually had a similar deal on our European cruise, but not quite as good 25 items for 20 dollars or something like that. I was thrilled to see DCL offer something. The laundry rooms are a nightmare on long European cruises. Carnival, Princess, and DCL are the only cruise lines with self-serve laundry. If that's important stick with those.

I've only had good internet on Royal.

DCL's sofa beds do not have bed rails. Maybe they do if they ask, but I've never seen them.

DCL is the only cruise line I know of with free room service. Of course, you are paying a lot more for your cruise so it's all relative.

When we cruised NCL Hawaii we vowed never again. Yes, it's a slightly different animal because it's USA-flagged and has U.S. employees. They had a wildcat strike just before our cruise, and they were quite under-staffed.

A short gangway failed in port and the crew reset it but didn't test it -- they watched as one of the passengers disembarked and her leg became trapped between the ship and the gangway. She's lucky she wasn't seriously injured.

Food was a joke -- even my pregnant niece lost weight that week. Dinner took up to an hour between courses, finally delivered by management, while hungry passengers waited in long lines outside the dining room. Some family members opted for pizza on shore, which tasted better than the featured items on the cruise menu. It was basically a floating hotel and it's hard to have a lousy time in Hawaii. Housekeeping was almost non-existent, and the staff that wasn't on strike were flipping each other with towels in the hallway instead of cleaning the staterooms.

With so many better choices, we just haven't found the "need" or desire to ever do an NCL cruise again.

For folks wondering, yes DCL has sofa bed rails and they work great. You can request them in the app the same way you can request a pack n play, high chair etc. and your host will set them up each night with the turndown service.

Sorry OP, your experiences are all things that would be dealbreakers for me too so helpful to know as we debated trying NCL and/or RCCL sometime, so this definitely narrows the field for me—we will stick with Disney or try NCL but definitely sounds like NCL is out.

I agree that this is helpful info - some of the comments here feel pretty dismissive. Of course it's a personal evaluation that is going to be different for different types of travelers, but a lot of the things that bothered you would be big problems for my family too. It's useful to know what other travelers have experienced.

We've done 8 Disney cruises and did 1 NCL cruise this past summer, also on the Encore. Before our Encore cruise I was so excited for it and had planned on booking 2 more NCL cruises. We also had a horrible experience with the cabin host. I knew before the cruise that they only cleaned the room once a day and was fine with that. First night I had to call at 10 or 11pm to get the sofa made into a bed for our dd. Never got cleaned towels or more toilet paper when needed so always had to call for those. My dd is a teen and only tried the teen club once and never went back. We thought the main dining rooms had good food, but agree the service in all 3 was poor. Everytime we had dinner in one of the dining rooms, one of us would get a wrong dinner. We never asked for anything to be made different yet they couldn't get dinner for 3 people correct. Also never got drink refills. We liked the race cars, but hated that they were only opened for 4 hrs each day, so we only got to do them once. Laser tag was canceled because of bad weather and there weren't any other times available. We enjoyed the Choir of Men show, but they only had 1 other night of entertainment in the theater. The Beatles shows were in the Social Club. Never could get in and they don't allow kids in, so not a family friendly move on NCL's part. Sorry you had a bad experience, we also weren't happy with NCL and won't cuise them again. I always hear how you have to book Haven to have a great cruse. We've booked oceanviews and verandahs on DCL and have always had wonderful cruises. Our cruise was to Alaska so at least we had a great destination.

Good feedback. We had some similar experiences.
My teen loved going to the teen club, had fun and made a lot of friends. The pools were ok. The food was meh. My hubby said after we got off (a cluster to that in San D), he would never do NCL again. I liked my unlimited Starbucks though, that was LOVELY.

I've never thought about doing NCL. We started out without kids on RCCL. Did RCCL once with 4 year. Moved to DCL with the kid. We have done Celebrity twice without our son and loved it. However, they are making some changes to pricing and suites that may rule it out in the future. We don't do suites on DCL due to the prices. Might try Virgin next, but that's not a kids cruise. Our son is doing his last DCL cruise in December as a minor. Not sure what we will do with him once he's 18. Actually, other than the December cruise, we don't have a cruise booked on any cruise line. Kind of waiting to see which college he goes to and what that schedule will be.

OP, thanks for letting us know about your experiences. I have heard complaints about DCL from newbies who didn't know the drill. However, the kids club thing is definitely weird. Hope your next cruise is amazing!

To each their own, I guess. I love NCL. It's my favorite line but we are adults with a grown DD.

First, all three of my children (11,8,4) HATED the kids club. They said it was boring, very little supervision, kids just running around everywhere, little organization. My 4 year old refused to go after the second day. He would panic when we just walked by the kids area. I'm sorry that your kids didn't like the kids clubs and you were unable to have some alone time :(. That must have been very disappointing. It's been 8 years since mine went to the teen club on the NCL Dawn. She enjoyed it at the time. I *think* that one of the problems was the timeframe that you sailed. Thanksgiving week can be very, very crowded with kids because of the shortened school week. It sounds like the Encore had more kids than usual and couldn't handle the number of kids that wanted to participate.

The ship was extremely overcrowded for what they offered. Getting into shows was near impossible, MDR reservations were booked out days in advance unless you wanted to eat at 9:30pm. Impossible to finds seats for buffet, no chairs available on the pool deck, etc.

Again, I think it was a really busy week with more families and higher occupancy and therefor the ship was super crowded. I've heard of there being problems in getting into shows on the Breakaway Plus class before. It's a big ship with a capacity of 3900.

Our balcony stateroom was TINY, the closet could not fit our suitcase at all. We booked two balcony staterooms next to each other, and they refused to open the dividers between the two rooms for us. They said it was a “safety issue” And that this was a rule across the entire NCL fleet.
Every single cabin I've stayed in was tiny. BTW, the luggage goes under the bed. AFAIK, that's correct about the balconies. They never open them.

They implemented the single visit with no additional turn down service this year (I think). It stinks. I really missed it on my last cruise on the NCL Epic in April. There is no excuse for being rude about changing a bed after a soda accident.

No self service laundry and the laundry offered by the ship was extremely expensive. 5 or 6 dollars for each single shirt, 7 or 8 dollars for each pant. With 5 of us that would obviously add up to a lot of money.
NCL usually offers a all-you-can-stuff bag special mid way through the cruise.

No soda machines. If you wanted a soda outside of meal times, you had to go to bar and ask for a cup.

No free room service. Even continental breakfast cost extra, and if you wanted a soda from room service you were charged even if you had the soda package.
Do some cruises have soda machines? I've never heard of that. I think the lack of free room service goes across many lines so NCL isn't special. For instance, if you wanted free room service on Princess you have to purchase an expensive package.

No included food on the pool decks. We went to the pool around 11am, thinking we would swim for an hour or so, grab some lunch on the deck and keep swimming. Nope. There was a bar but the only food available was at the diner which is not free and ended up tasting terribly.
I know that a lot of ships have a mini buffet area on the pool deck, but isn't the Garden Cafe right on the pool deck? Couldn't you just throw on a cover and go into the buffet?

There was never any seating at the buffet. We ended up having to walk from the buffet to the pool because that was the only seating we could ever find. Extremely long lines.
Another symptom of a packed ship.

No bedrails for my 4 year old who slept on the converted sofa. He fell off the bed twice in the middle of the night :(
Poor kiddo!

Sorry to hear about your dog :(. I hope he's OK now. I've never had good internet on a cruise, even when it's included in my package. I always plan on hitting a bar or coffee shop in port to check email, etc. Did you try to talk to the IT staff onboard?

I feel like *everything* cost extra. Even really old movies in the stateroom cost money to watch. The only free movies were ones they played on loop at certain times.

I don't think I have ever watched a movie in our cabin. The price would not even be on my radar. I also don't play Bingo or the other gambling games like Deal or No Deal. My package always includes drinks, slow internet and a couple of specialty dining meals so once I'm on board I don't pay for anything except for excursions. Food, drinks, entertainment ... all included.

Thank you for sharing!

I do think that some of your problems were from sailing on a very full ship at a very busy time. Too many kids for the kids clubs to be easy to use. Too many people overwhelming the buffet, the theater, the MDR and the internet. It would be just like going to WDW when kids have a break ... crazy busy with long lines and overwhelmed staff. I also think you could have done your homework a little more and you would have known that NCL doesn't open balcony dividers, they don't have free room service, they only have a single cabin service and that they don't have a self-service laundry before you arrived.

Every single cabin I've stayed in was tiny. BTW, the luggage goes under the bed. AFAIK, that's correct about the balconies. They never open them.
Just one more thing to keep in mind when comparing against DCL. Disney's cabins are usually larger.

NCL usually offers a all-you-can-stuff bag special mid way through the cruise.
It's not free, though. I usually do my own laundry for much less than the $30 that NCL charges for that bag and I can do it on whatever day works best for me rather than being on their schedule.
Do some cruises have soda machines? I've never heard of that. I think the lack of free room service goes across many lines so NCL isn't special. For instance, if you wanted free room service on Princess you have to purchase an expensive package.
Disney has free soda machines and free room service.

Well, but "free at sea" isn't at all "free" since they pre-charge you quite a lot for what they call "gratuities". Disney offers lots of free movies, but I guess that's expected since they own those movies.
