We have decided on the Forest River Georgetown 364TS. We can purchase a 2016 for about $3200 less than a 2017. Both are brand new. Does anyone know if there are any differences? Does it make more sense to buy one or the other?

Thanks!!

There may be something they changed on the 2017, but most likely not. My RV dealer said that they decide one day at the factory to start labeling them for the following year. So one on the assembly line may say 2016, the next might be the start of 2017, and nothing changed. Personally, wouldn't mind the savings of the 16. Sure others will mention that it has been exposed to the elements, etc for a year, maybe, depends on when it was built. But I would purchase the 16 with no worries.

Sounds great at first thought to save that much money up front, but do keep in mind that it will technically be a year old already - for the books. The minute you buy and leave the lot it is already depreciated! (As will the 2017, but a year newer). Don't know how long the 2016 has been sitting on the dealer's lot, or when it was built - that could also factor in.

Personally, for that small a difference on something that expensive, we would go with the newer model - unless there were changes made in newer model that you just didn't like. Definitely a personal decision though.

Congratulations - you will enjoy it immensely! :-)

Looking at NADA wholesale, there is a value difference of $17,450 between a 2016 and 2015 364TS. I'd likely go for the '17.

Look at the tires for date code as to when the tires were manufactured. A 2016 motorhome could have been built on a 2015 chassis or older and the tires could be 1+ years old so closer to aging out.

I would go for 2017. I'm thinking that the additional discount on the 2016 IS NOT ENOUGH on top of the standard discount.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I am going to try to find out more info (tires and how long it has been sitting on the lot) tomorrow.

As others have mentioned the "Depreciation Value", for me this is only a factor if I plan on keeping it for a short time only. (i.e. couple of years). Maybe $32K is a "Small Amount" to some, but not to me. Even if I were spending over $130K. The TAX alone is also a factor. It was mentioned that the difference in Blue Book on a 2016 to 2015 was ~$17.5K Given that fact, you are still ahead by close to $15K by taking the 2016 model over the 2017.

Obviously this is a personal choice. If the options are essentially the same and the difference in blue book isn't an issue, then I'd go with the 2016. If the value is more of a concern, maybe lean to the 2017.

Also, I am not so sure even the Tire Date codes is that much of an issue for me either. (unless of course they are even old for a 2016, but then that could be a bigger issue with the dealer). Again, using the savings minus depreciation giving you a Positive of ~$15K, if you had to buy all new tires.... What's that going to cost? $5K? (Probably much less) Still ahead.

So if I planned to keep it for MANY MANY MANY years to come, I would go with the savings deal. Your Mileage will certainly vary with your needs/wants/desires

This is a great point. The longer you keep it, the more you can justify taking the 16 and the initial savings. If you think you may trade or sell within the next 5 years, most certainly, the 17 is the way to go.

Rereading the original post, the 2016 is only being offered at a 3200$ discount, not a 32K discount. So the buyer would not be ahead 15K. They'd be under by 14K.

I don't think that is enough to warrant buying the 2016, even if I were to keep it for many years.

I personally would try to negotiate a steeper discount if I were planning on maybe 10 years of use. Otherwise I'd try to buy the newer one and try for any discount on the newer model.

Excellent point. It's amazing the difference a decimal place can make. o_O

I would have to totally agree. $3.2K? Nope, I'd go with the 2017. $32K, I'd go with the 2016 (other factors not withstanding).

I think I need about $300 for a new pair of glasses too so I can see those decimal places better.

In 10 years the difference between the 16 and 17 in value will likely be in the $5k ballpark. Then you have to consider what your $3200 today will be worth in 2026. Just to complicate things. :)

I hated :crazy2: doing the "Future Value" calculations (Finance) in college... I sure as heck would not going to that detail over that small of an amount.

We just bought at GT 365TS last Saturday. We went for the 2017. Using it for the first time at the Fort on 10/27 if we can get there from NJ.

Thank you all for your input. Surprisingly, the coach that was advertised as a 2016, was actually a 2017. Win, win!!! We saved and got the newer model :)

paint me jealous!!!

ENJOY YOUR NEW HOME ON WHEELS.
