Our local high school bandboosters are selling one of those coupon books that costs like $50 and has something like 300 pages of coupons. We answered the phone ONCE three weeks ago and told them we didn't want to buy the book but my lord, they are RELENTLESS!Thirty six times in the last three weeks they have called (it shows up as Band Boosters with a ph # on the caller id) and we know it's to sell us the book. The next time they call I'm going to let them freaking have it.I am sick of getting their calls. We never answer the phone and they don't even bother to leave a message on the machine, thank goodness. I thought after we told them we didn't want the book and we didn't answer their phone calls, they'd get the hint. But apparently not.We live in a relatively poor school district in a VERY small town and I understand they need to raise money for their 18 person marching band. But really,do they need to pester us so much? It's not just them either. It's the whole danged school district. I generally DO NOT buy items from school kids who go door to door, ever. I've had more kids at my door in the last three months to last me a life time. Cookies, candy, wrapping paper, magazine subscriptions, ceramic doodads, you name it they were selling it. A lot of the time when they ring the doorbell and I see it's a kid standing on my porch(I look through the peephole first),I don't even answer the door and hope they'll go away.Sometimes they ring the doorbell t hree or four times before realizing I"m not coming to the door. I am extremely tempted to put up a 'no soliciting' sign,I swear.

How am I being harsh? We told them the FIRST time they called us we didn't want their book. Yet they continue to call. DH has decided this is ENOUGH and we are keeping a log of how many times, what time of day,etc they are calling.
I don't have kids and I support the school district with taxes. I don't think I should be obligated to buy whatever the kids happen to be selling this month also.

But I thought you had a child in high school...or were in high school yourself...

Doing a Disney Research paper and I need some help!:)
Hi!
I'm new to the DIS and I"m here primarily because I am using Disney as a possible topic for my senior thesis in High School. I wasn't sure where to turn a nd I've having problems finding the answers to the following questions. I was hoping that you, the true Disney Experts, could help me out by either giving me the answers or showing me where I could find them. Thanking you in advance,
DisneyResearcher
(1) You probably know that Walt Disney won 26 Oscars, but who directed more of those movies than any other person?

(2) How many Disney animated theatrical features in the past 20 years included the voice of an Oscar-winner?

(3) What was the first Disney animated feature to be nominated in a non-musical category?

Color me confused.

I thought she said she was married????

I was doing the research for a college paper. Yes...I'm in college..at the ripe old age of 24.I've been married for 4 years and DH and I don't have kids yet.Is it wrong to put a 'no soliciting' sign up if you really, truly do not want to buy any cookies, candy, etc from the local school kids? I'm sorry if I came off harsh in the OP.We had just gotten the millionth call from these people and I was really, really ticked off. I apologize.

DisneyResearcher

I guess it was the "senior thesis in High School" thing that threw me off. My most sincere apologies. :)

Well....here's another scenario for you to think about....

Pay the small amount of money here and there to support some of the programs or have your taxes raised because they need to fund these and other programs somehow.

You know what I'd rather do - pay for those stupid fund raisers once in a while rather than seeing the programs get cut (these are usually good socialization and responsibility programs) and having my taxes raised.

JMO

Now I do have to admit that that is a little excessive - them calling that much and I would get ticked too. And I too think that $50 is a bit much. But I wouldn't deny ALL of the fundraisers - I would at least purchase from one - but geesh - $50 and this close after Christmas...what kind of trip are they taking????

We usually get our money's worth out of those coupon books. At the minimum we break even.

I think I"m just gonna put up a 'no soliciting' sign. I like kids as much as the next person but since I don't have kids myself yet, I don't feel like I should have to pay to fund their trip to the Cow Poop Museum or wherever. Let the parents do it, that's what parents are for, isn't it?

DisneyResearcher(who admits to a mistake in her very first post here at the DIS..it said HS when it should've said "college".Proves how tired I was that night.Hee.)

That does sound rather harsh. No, you're not obligated to buy anything but I hope you remember that they are just kids. They're also working pretty hard to support their school and don't deserve rudeness.

2 Questions -

How and why does an 18 person marching band have their own phone number with Caller Id?

and

How is putting up a No Soliciting Sign going to stop phone calls?

I know in our area the calls that come from "band boosters", "football boosters" are actually professional fund raising companies. Our band, football, soccer ect. are asked to sell about 2-4 of those books each only. The calls you are getting may be coming from a company and may not be part of the school program at all.

I will buy some of the fundraisers but I don't buy anything from anyone selling over the phone.

Hey I don't blame you at all it is annoying!

When they call again I would ask for the number of the head funraising person and tell them to take you off of their list and put up the NO soliciting sign.....

I can't get over people telling you your being harsh...people bash telemarketers all of the time!...36 times calling you is indeed excessive!

You'll be paying plenty when you have a kid in school so why buy the book if you don't want it!

I don't know how many people are in their marching band, tbh. I just guessed 18 because the school is VERY very small..probably a graduating class of less than 200 if that many.
Like I said,DH is keeping a log of when and what time they call and is going to report them to the ph company and the school and have the number blocked because it's a royal pain the patoot to have them call all hours of the day and night. We were out last night but according to the caller ID on the ph,they called 9:30 and again at 10:15,right before we got home.

Also...see the Debate Board.

Actually it's against the law to call you after 10 pm.

Ask to be put on their "Do Not Call" list. If they call you after that, ask the person for their name, phone number, address, name of company who is making the calls for them. Tell them you are reporting them to the Federal Trade Commission:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/donotcall/coninfo.html

Also, call the school and tell them what is happening and what you plan to do about it.

Your state may have already started it's own Do Not Call list. I believe you are in Texas? You can go here:

http://www.texasnocall.com/

Follow the instructions and no telemarketer can call you. If they do, it's a hefty fine. I don't know what Texas charges, but the FTC will charge $11,000 per violation once they implement the national call registry.

Hope that helps!

I was going to suggest that you should ask them to take your name off their list. Someone has already done that, so here is something else.

I understand you do not want to help. Believe me, we get so many kids in our neighborhood it drives me crazy. To top it off, I have kids selling the same thing.

I allow my children to pick one fundraiser. That is it.
My DD does not do any, she is in high school. My DS, 8, only does the spring fundraiser. They sell flowers. Most people are buying flowers in the spring anyway. We only sell to friends and few neighbors. We don't like bugging people.

Now, on that, "isn't that what the parents are for" quote.
Well, you see, most public schools cannot afford to send the kids to say, Washington D.C. on their own. And unfortunately, there are a lot of parents that cannot afford it either. So, please be careful on those matters. My DD did a lot of fundraising for her D.C. trip in 8th grade. Because of the kindness of friends and relatives, she did quite well and we only had to foot about 1/2 the bill.

Please remember your thoughts on this topic when you have children in school.
Lisajl

Call the school and ask to speak with the principal. Find out if they are doing the fundraising from the school. Then ask to have your name removed from the list. And if the school district is that poor, then chances are the parents are at or near the poverty level and can't afford to buy these items out of their own pockets. In my opinion anything that helps these kids out is a good thing. And no I don't have any children in school. My one and only child is 24 years old. But, when the day comes that I have grandchildren, I know that I will probably go broke buying all the things that they are selling.

Why i brought up you being a little harsh was that you need to think about if that was your child going up to someones door trying to raise money for their school, field trips or whatever the cause is.you should think how you would want your child treated.;)
