Yesterday they started laying off employees (1400 to start, will be 5000 total).
This is the first time they have had to do this.

My husband calls me from work (Microsoft, of course  ) to say that he should be all right and not to worry.

But then he reminded me that even if he did get laid off everything would be all right. Obama is president! :yay:

I really hope your husband doesn't get laid off....... as far as the other part :lmao:

Hey Bud,

Skip Obama. I voted for the guy and even I know, he's a politician. You two are going to be alright because:

1) You're great people, who care about others. (I'm one of those good Karma attracts good karma, annoying people. ;) )
2) You've got a great attitude on life and I'm a firm believe attitude helps every thing.
3) Last but not least, We're Americans, we've survivours (some times I think in spite of the genuises we elect. :goodvibes )

See ya at the lodge.

Thanks for the good thoughts :goodvibes

E-Bud :goodvibes ....sadly we have been through 5 years total of layoffs over the past 15....so it does happen.:sad1:

But, that being said, we do try to keep a good attitude.
But it is a little scary. But we are survivors, like you said.
See you at our happy place

B--

That is wonderful news! Dh thinks he is OK now also. However, one never knows what the future will bring.

I agree with Eliza61. Better to be self reliant and all that good stuff!

They are starting to lay off around here now. Every day it seems another business, another company is closing or letting people go.

Hey there! Good to see you :goodvibes . Oh yeah, we are planners to the nth degree, believe me!

Is your husband a Microsoft guy also? Man, these are not good times. I hope all will remain well with you too.:flower3:

Are you still at the world or are you back to the real life?

Unfortuatly more job losses are predicted for 2009.
This from WSJ

Conference Board: 2009 Job Losses Could Hit 2 Million
In early December, the Conference Board predicted that job losses could top 3 million by the middle of 2009. Now payroll declines appear likely to far exceed that mark this year — by one million jobs.

The business research group on Monday estimated the economy could lose 2 million more jobs this year on top of the roughly 2.6 million erased in 2008. That would be about 60% higher than the average job losses over the past five recessions (roughly 2%).

Back to real life. :( LOL Can't complain--was with Mickey for 10 days.

DH, Microsoft? ROTFL Nope, he's practically computer illiterate. He's part of DoE. Lay-offs are always looming.

Times are tough. At the same time, it is a *good* time for places who mismanage to cry foul and blame the economy and bail out when they werejust bad business people also. It'll be a combo of the two types, I think!

10 days! Good long time with the Mouse!:thumbsup2

Yes, I think we will see lots of interesting things with this economy.

The evening news in Seattle this week is full of layoff notices:

5,000 for Microsoft
3,500 for WAMU
3,000 for Boeing

My former employer also had layoffs this week, but apparently not as severe as these big three. :sad1:

Layoffs are all over.

I see empty buildings and business all over the place now. I see stores that just opened in November already closing up. I see restaurants shuttered, banks closing.

Almost every day I see a new closed business and it is really sad.

Around here they are talking about laying off police and fire fighters. You know the economy is bad when the police and fire fighters are getting laid off.

The Microsoft layoffs have been needed and coming for some time. Unfortunately from what we've been hearing inside they're not letting those in the bottom 10% go, they're letting some of the good ones go and keeping the under performers - like SteveB.

My DH has been a mess all week and really really grateful that he left MSFT when he did.

Sorry about the layoffs. My DH has worked for 24 years with the threat of a layoff. He started with AT&T, which became Lucent, which sold his division (thank God) to General Dynamics. We have been through 3 plant closings!

We just live life the best we can and never think about layoffs. We are prepared for the worst. (Debt paid off, money in savings)

At a party, one of my DH's associates' wife told me that she was regrettful that they only had one child. We have 3. Her DH didn't want any more children because of the constant fear he had of being laid off. A fear that he had for 28 years that never happened. Now their daughter is grown and on her own.:sad1:

I've always told my husband not to tell me about possible layoffs, only call me when he gets his pink slip. That is how constant the threat was in his industry.

I hope things pick up soon.

Lori

Boy oh boy do I know that feeling. I'm at my 3rd company and of course I thought since it was a big company like microsoft, I thought I'd be able to hang out here for a while. We had a big contract labor force and they just let those guys go. :sad1:
"The old guy" works for British Petroleum so as long as we need gas he should be pretty good.

I wish they would determine what the bottom line is in how many they need to lay off and then do it one time.

I went thru 5 down sizing until I got let go on the 6th one. It's no joy sitting there wondering when the other shoe is going to drop. It is emotional hell. I would have bailed on the 1st one but was only 48 and at 50 you could retire with health insurance if you had enough points which I did. I made it to 51. When it happened it was like a 2000 ton rock was lifted off my shoulders.

I am with you on that one. Otherwise it is slow torture.

One good layoff story. My husband worked for a subdivision of a company in Minnesota several years ago (we are here in NC). One day they decided to move the entire NC operation up to MN, and told everyone they were 'welcome to apply for the MN job'. Needless to say, no body applied (no offense MN, but NC is a little more pleasant).

Then they realized they had no body to support the software that came out of NC! So they had to 'ask' my husband and his boss if they would consider staying on here in NC, and they would give them a bonus if they did!
Dummies. So that was in 2001 and his job lasted another 3 years.
