We Ditched The Kids! - UPDATE (7/22 - NYC trip)

Thankfully, we still had the morning to ourselves before we needed to be back for the DUD*.

Perfect @pkondz, just perfect! :worship:

You two are amazing!

I know this is the flagship resort, the crème de la crème, but I have to admit—I never really feel comfortable in the Grand Floridian.

Not going to lie, I did too. And then I stayed here. Staying here completely changes your perspective on the resort. It's not as 'intimidating' as it once seemed. Now to me it's comfortable, vibrant and most importantly, unbelievably convenient!

The bathrooms. Guess that morning coffee did a number on us.

That first cups always hits hard!

The skipper informed us that it was their Christmas tree, “all wrapped up in a pretty boa.”

Gah that's so bad, I love it

Oh Julie. As a woman, I feel like I should back her up anyway...but this score is just...:sad2:

After a few minutes, the server found us in vaguely creepy Big Brother-ish fashion

Eerie isn't it?! And I agree with you about BOG. I do like the relaxed and cool environment of the restaurant though, which is what i'm guessing, keeps folks coming back, even if the food is pretty average/good.

Perfect @pkondz, just perfect! :worship:

Thanks Alicia! But to give credit where credit is due, it originated when Nebo (know him? not around anymore, unfortunately) called it Magical Depress. I borrowed it and, well... My TR readers are encouraged to share and vent and contribute. It may have been me, may have been someone else, but it eventually morphed from "Magical Depress" to "Unmagical Express" to "Disney's Unmagical Depress or DUD".

But I'll still take all the accolades of course, @Leshaface!

Last days usually stink but you are making the most of it. Early morning and coffee. Even managed to squeeze in the GF before park open.
:rotfl2: That your first ride was the bathroom. Been there adn better before you are in line.

Overall you got quite a bit done and great job on the priorities.

I like BOG for lunch, better than dinner in fact. I always get the roast beef so I guess I can pre order. Marv and I have split that before and it works - Just enough for us and room for a snack later.

Wow, you got a ton done that morning. Glad you finished your resort decoration tour, saw the welcome show, and got in a couple of major attractions during EMH. I have yet to see that Peter Pan queue. Love Be Our Guest, especially all decorated for Christmas.

:woohoo: I hope it all works out! Free dining?
We’ll we’ve got some things booked, but I’m still wary that something may force us to cancel again…
Right now though we’re booked in late September on a deal that gives us 5 days’ worth of Hoppers, 4 nights at CBR and includes dinning. We’re planning to do the Cali-Grill one evening but the other two TS venues are still in flux. We’ve got some other plans to stretch the trip out a bit more but nothing is absolutely final yet.

No Super 8's this time.
“He can be taught!”

(to quote one of the better characters)

I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid.
“All too easy…”

(to quote a different franchise)

But I’ll let someone else take a swing at that one.
It just wouldn’t be sporting.

Hopefully I will still have the time to do a TR. We'll see.
I do hope so, because your stories are a lot of fun to follow.
But I also very clearly understand how new job responsibilities can and will interfere with spare time.
You wouldn’t be the first of the TR writers I’ve followed who had to dial it back or call it quits all together for similar reasons.

By the way, congrats on the new responsibilities… officially.
May the changes be the new adventure that you most need.

Imagine 10 more minutes of that!
Sounds wonderful!
The bad jokes are one of my favorite aspects of any MK visit.

No kidding. Fed told me if you even sneeze in the MK, Disney knows all about it.
Well, Fed also knows everything so I do believe that I’ll take his word for it here.

Quite a strong reaction there. It's not like it's a vegetable.
Yeah, I’m odd that way (as well as many, many other ways, but let’s stick to this one for now)…

There is a flavor aspect of egg whites that makes me quite nauseous. Thorough mixing in of the yolks completely removes all vestiges of it (through some chemical reaction I’m sure), but without the yolk the only thing that makes the whites stomachable is cataclysmic amount of black pepper. Sugar isn’t as effective so meringue and similar confections are often quite inedible. For that matter a poorly beaten egg-wash will also ruin French Toast, and Christo type sandwiches as random bites can be overwhelmed by the egg whites. As such, I tend to shy away from even those type dishes unless I really trust the chef.

Blech!

:lmao: I did that too!
How about building a model plane... and then dousing it in gasoline and setting it on fire?
Guilty as charged.

Firecrackers and gasoline make for an entertaining combination as well.

Full-size? Wouldn't you be able to walk inside it if it was full size?
You could if you were a CM.
At least when I encountered the annual GF Gingerbread house, it was designed to double as a kiosk from which Disney CMs were selling gingerbread and other confections to guests out the back door.

I think it gives the feeling that it ought to load faster because of the fact that it's an ever loading ride, but I think because of the mechanisms required for the boats to 'fly', they go a lot slower than other rides that are also constantly loading, like Haunted Mansion or Buzz.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Peter Pan has the lower guest capacity per hour of all rides in Disney World.

Interesting. I always learn something new here on the boards.

I know! None of them wanted it! I was shocked also. I knew, sadly, that it was too much for one person, so I just skipped it (because the price was high considering I'd need to throw some away; OR I may have lacked self control and eaten it all, which would probably made me sick :sad1:).

You know, calories don't count on vacation. Just sayin'.

My condolences...

At least the stadium is pretty.

Oh, wait, you don't care if they lose, and in fact probably want the Phillies to win. Enjoy!

Exactly! It's one of the few teams the Phillies might be competitive against.

I'm so impressed that you and others do so well with their reports. I am unfortunately so slow. Meant to do a Disneyland Paris one and didn't. Hmmm. Might just do Disneyland.

More in a second...

Darn. Disneyland Paris would be fascinating. Most of us here don't know it very well!

Ha! That's a new one to me. I also use the term the "Tragical Express."

That works, too.

The Polynesian looks so gorgeous. Nice pictures!

Thank you!:goodvibes

Seriously. That is so annoying. I think coffee drinkers probably carve a good year or two off of their lives that way, in terms of real-world (non-bathroom) time.

I don't know. The caffeine helps us move faster, so maybe that saves some time.

Well-done! We just did the same thing in Disneyland with Peter Pan. First ride, 20 minutes. Worth it.

I'm always amazed at the lines for that ride. I know it's a classic, but it doesn't seem like a great payoff for a long wait.

Yup. Good call.

:thumbsup2

Those effects sound so cool. We just missed them on our last trip, I think.

It was a nice addition to make the wait easier!

Fun information!! Thanks.

:thumbsup2

This just happened to us with Small World. They sent a bunch of empty boats through (in a row, in our case) while we waited.

Of course, the real question here is: why were you in line for It's A Small World???:confused3

That's what I had. Tasty. The cupcakes for dessert were good, too. The "grey stuff" did not disappoint.

Glad it was a good experience!

We are hoping to try it for dinner sometime, probably. I agree that the setting is the main reason to go. Amazing.

I can't believe your trip's almost over. :worried:

Those long weekends go way too quickly.

Yeah, that WAS quick!

::yes::

I take photos like that from my balcony, in my bathrobe.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: It's Disney! You can sleep when you're dead!

I think I might have that same picture, so pretty!

Thanks! It's a nice, relaxing place, for sure.

Ahhh, but that's only on the outside. The Victorian era was full of debauchery, everyone just tried to hide it behind their prim and properness!

Maybe so, but you won't find that part of it at Disney! Just the prim and properness.

Well at least you're not hiding anything!

Exactly! My debauchery is out in the open. Sorry for that mental image.

Nice shot of that!

:thumbsup2

At first I was going to say we were there, but then I realize this is Monday, we were one day behind you!

Yeah, I seem to remember we weren't going to be able to cross paths that day.

You're probably right about that.

Of course I'm right. When am I ever wrong?:confused3:rolleyes1

I don't think I've ever been through the queue.

It's hard to give up 45 minutes of your life for a queue.

I can tell you already you wouldn't like the menu. I'm pretty sure there is no burger on the menu.

Outrage! Sacrilege!

That's very interesting! I'm going to have to pay attention to the same at Disneyland!

It wouldn't surprise me if his face showed up there, too!

Now you guys really need to come back here since she didn't ride Space Mountain with us a couple years ago.

Agreed! SM was better in California.

That looks like a very poor version of a croque monsieur, it should be dipped in an egg batter and fried in a grill pan.

I expected a hot ham-and-cheese sandwich, and that's what I got. So it met expectations.

Mmmmmm, now I think I know what I want for lunch today!

How was it?

I definitely agree, we have experienced both lunch and dinner now and while both were very good, there are other places that we enjoy more.

Seems like most people are on the same page.:thumbsup2

It always does.... it always does.

Yep. No matter how long you're there.

It didn't originate with me. Well, the acronym did, but Magical Depress was from Nebo, who was a really fun TR writer but isn't around any more.

Sorry I never got to read Nebo's TR's. Sounds like he was a good one. But thanks for letting me steal the acronym.

Nah. I'm not buying it. That's a shot from the evening.

Oh, come on. We have a 2-year-old at home. We're used to being up at the butt crack of dawn anyway.

You prefer khaki pants and sooty?

Actually...yes.

Well, actually.... they don't serve your kind there.

I knew it!

I get this. I think of Disney and I think fantastic themeing (like Wilderness Lodge) or fun like Art of Animation.

Absolutely. AKL and WL are my favorite resorts, just because of how exotic and transporting the themes are.

:lmao: I did that too!
How about building a model plane... and then dousing it in gasoline and setting it on fire?

Sadly, no. I didn't fool around with gasoline. My uncles used to painstakingly build model ships and then blow them apart with BB guns, though.

I guess it would lend itself to that.

It definitely works well with Christmas.

Full-size? Wouldn't you be able to walk inside it if it was full size?

You can! Or at least, someone can. There's a CM inside selling cookies and hot chocolate.

If you hadn't said it, I would have.

I know where my bread is buttered.

 Well, it's nice to be first somewhere in Disney.

We take all the perks we can get.

Huh. Not bad. I guess EMH helped with that.
I suspect if you'd stopped at the bathroom on a regular day the wait would've been a bit longer.

Absolutely. I'm glad it worked out this way.

Good point! I sure as heck won't stand in line for this one (well, not more than 20 minutes anyway) but it's a fun little ride to start the day with.

20 minutes is my limit for most rides, unless it's one of my absolute favorites. So this one has a 20-minute max.

I think they did a great job with that queue. Did you or Julie let a butterfly land on your shadow?

No, but we did get to witness it. A lot of clever little tricks in that queue.

Those are two good ones to get out of the way alright.

There's no way I'm enduring the lines later!

the madding crowd

I wanted to stay far from it.

That place looks really interesting from the pictures I've seen.

It does look cool. I didn't have much interest in the menu, though. Shocker.

I like that one.

You'd love the ride!

All he needs is a lantern!

That's happened to me too.
Not recently, but it has happened.

Always wondered what the deal is with empty boats being sent out.

Yep. That happens. I totally believe her.

Otherwise she would've kicked your butt.

Figures.

Pre-ordering your meal is what makes this place so great!
You just walk in like you own the place, sit down... and food is brought out to you.

Well, maybe we'll try it next time!

And the Croque Monsieur is dipped in an egg/milk mixture before frying it up.

Ah. So it should be a French Toast sandwich.

You waited?

Oh, right. You didn't pre-order.
When you do, your food is brought out within a minute or so of sitting down.

I think we just weren't sure what we'd be in the mood for.

No Grey stuff? What's with that???
Rebels!

Lemon meringue sounded better than "grey" to me.

I'd agree with that.

:thumbsup2

And that too. If you're on the dining plan, it's one of the better uses of a QS credit.

I'd agree with that. Especially in MK.

That I wouldn't know. But I suspect... not.

I agree, from what I've read.

But thanks for letting me steal the acronym.

Not really sure how I could possibly stop you, so.... be my guest!

Oh, come on. We have a 2-year-old at home. We're used to being up at the butt crack of dawn anyway.

That's true. Okay, I'll give you that one. It was morning.

Sadly, no. I didn't fool around with gasoline.

Dad had a plastic jug with gas for the mower.
Not my fault if a little got lost from time to time.

(I'm lucky I didn't blow myself up.)

My uncles used to painstakingly build model ships and then blow them apart with BB guns, though.

Okay, that sounds like fun.

You can! Or at least, someone can. There's a CM inside selling cookies and hot chocolate.

There is?!?!?

I know where my bread is buttered.

On the side that lands on the ground when you drop it.

20 minutes is my limit for most rides, unless it's one of my absolute favorites. So this one has a 20-minute max.

Yup. Ditto.

It does look cool. I didn't have much interest in the menu, though. Shocker.

Just heard that reviews haven't been that good.
May be just too much "weird" stuff, though.

You'd love the ride!

Probably. :)

Ah. So it should be a French Toast sandwich.

hmmm... depends on your French toast. I make mine with cinnamon and cocoa, which would suck with ham and cheese.

Lemon meringue sounded better than "grey" to me.

Actually, it does to me too. But I had to try it, I'd heard it was delicious.

Is this a contented sigh? An "I give up." sigh? "I'm not sure where to begin" sigh?

More of the latter 2. I was resigning myself to the fact that the getaway would soon be over.

I wondered where that'd come from.

I only steal from the best.
YUS! More Java options for my "Essentials List"! :dancer:

I may be in the minority, but Joffrey's > Starbucks.

Thank you! Someone who understands my reverse snooty-ishness for this place.

:woohoo:

My kids did that with Green Army Men in Crapistan. Hilarious. And even moreso since no one blew their hand off while having fun.

Yes, safety first! Then do all the stupid human tricks you want.

So you ARE real human beings, afterall.

Was that in doubt??:confused3

Gorgeous shot!

Thank you!:goodvibes

WOW! Clever twinning.

It was neat for our tour guide to point that one out.

Seems legit. My guns are always defective like that too.

I blame defective guns for not being able to find a date in high school as well.

Perfect @pkondz, just perfect! :worship:

::yes::

You two are amazing!

Yes, we know.

Er, I mean, THANKS!

Not going to lie, I did too. And then I stayed here. Staying here completely changes your perspective on the resort. It's not as 'intimidating' as it once seemed. Now to me it's comfortable, vibrant and most importantly, unbelievably convenient!

I'm not saying I'd turn down a free room there. I mean, it's a Disney resort. I'm sure it's great. The theme just isn't my thing.

Having stayed at the Poly, I do get the convenience argument, though.

That first cups always hits hard!

::yes::

Gah that's so bad, I love it

There's plenty more where that came from! I just can't remember them all.

Oh Julie. As a woman, I feel like I should back her up anyway...but this score is just...:sad2:

A travesty, I know.

Eerie isn't it?! And I agree with you about BOG. I do like the relaxed and cool environment of the restaurant though, which is what i'm guessing, keeps folks coming back, even if the food is pretty average/good.

The building itself is a feat of Imagineering. That should always be celebrated.

You deserve it! DUD is a perfect description.

Last days usually stink but you are making the most of it. Early morning and coffee. Even managed to squeeze in the GF before park open.

We were going to see all the resort decorations or die trying!

:rotfl2: That your first ride was the bathroom. Been there adn better before you are in line.

Amen to that!

Overall you got quite a bit done and great job on the priorities.

Thanks. We did better this time.

I like BOG for lunch, better than dinner in fact. I always get the roast beef so I guess I can pre order. Marv and I have split that before and it works - Just enough for us and room for a snack later.

I was tempted to go with the braised pork. Maybe next time.

Wow, you got a ton done that morning. Glad you finished your resort decoration tour, saw the welcome show, and got in a couple of major attractions during EMH. I have yet to see that Peter Pan queue. Love Be Our Guest, especially all decorated for Christmas.

We tried to be productive. After all, we only had a few hours left!

More of the latter 2. I was resigning myself to the fact that the getaway would soon be over.

Always a sad, perhaps the most sad, moment of the trip- next to getting on the DUD.

I only steal from the best.

I just see it as borrowing back and forth from each other.

I may be in the minority, but Joffrey's > Starbucks.

Close...

Anything > Starbucks.

Was that in doubt??:confused3

At some point, when you were hiking up a half naked, 435 degree trail of red dust to an arch in the next zip code, I did wonder if Zeus was your distant cousin.

I blame defective guns for not being able to find a date in high school as well.

Keep trying.

Thank you, sir! So far, it's been a fun job. Very busy, but I actually like a little chaos. I feel more productive when I'm putting fires out.

We'll see on the TR's. I've been getting a lot less free time on my lunch hours than I used to.

Sounds wonderful!
The bad jokes are one of my favorite aspects of any MK visit.

Gotta experience them at least once per trip.

Well, Fed also knows everything so I do believe that I’ll take his word for it here.

Thanks, Liesa! I don't know if I'm rocking it or just barely treading water, but it's always good to hear from you!

It looked a little too weird for my tastes. But that's nothing new.

Ew. Yeah, good point.

I'm flattered. But no, we're just a little nuts.

Keep trying.

And the sun was in my eyes.

I like this angle -- don't think I've seen it in a TR before.

IMG_2051.JPG

I’m not sure what was going on here. I’ve always thought of this ride as a fast loader, and my waits are always less than the posted time. But not this time. This time we seemed to stand still in the queue forever.

Everybody always says that (that it's a fast loader), but I always seem to get the experience you described. Probably because our visits have always been during the busier times.

I’d hoped for a seat in the West Wing, but the tables were all occupied and we didn’t feel comfortable stalking anyone in there.

Bummer. (Us too, by the way.) It looks like you would be free to eat without silverware in there since it's all beastly and everything.

But I also don’t feel the need to eat here during every visit. Overall, I’d say it’s worth seeing at least once just to marvel at the work of the Imagineers in building the place. After that, don’t sweat it for the food.

I'd agree with that. It's cool to see, but I wouldn't need to eat there all the time.

I see what you did there!

Thanks. I don't make up everything in these TR's.

Thanks for italicizing "everything".

Yes, you are. But I bet you had fun!

::yes:: Kids these days aren't allowed to have that kind of fun anymore.

Then again... they get to keep their hands and feet, so... fair trade-off.

Pretty much. Speaking of which, we need to try this:

I've seen that.
I think it's gonna be the energy source of the future.

And was it? Because I was happy with the lemon meringue.

It was good, but.... maybe a bit too much of a good thing?
It was a lot of sweet.

That lemon meringue looked good.
If I go there again I'd probably get that next time.

the Grand Floridian (or Disney’s Red Roof Inn).
I like it!

I know this is the flagship resort, the crème de la crème, but I have to admit—I never really feel comfortable in the Grand Floridian. It feels fancy-pants and snooty to me. I keep expecting a security guard to grab me the moment I walk in and say, “I’m sorry, we don’t serve your kind here.” Part of it is the Victorian theme. I know, many people go gaga over Victorian-era garb and activities, but to me it gives a vibe of what the world would look like if the Fun Police were in charge. Everything must be in its place and polished to a shine and everyone wears their 3-piece suits to afternoon tea and discusses politics and proper dressage techniques for their stable and the etiquette of croquet like proper gentlemen over tiny sandwiches and rock-hard scones and oh please just shoot me now. If you need me, I’ll be at home attaching firecrackers to my brothers’ model cars.
::yes::

Having said all that, I also have to admit—the place looks terrific at Christmas time.
::yes::

We ended up only getting these two rides done during EMH, but we didn’t feel bad about it. They were two of the most popular, and the day hadn’t officially started yet.
You'd like to do more than 2 rides, but getting those 2 knocked out during that hour is a pretty big success!

I’m not sure what was going on here. I’ve always thought of this ride as a fast loader, and my waits are always less than the posted time. But not this time. This time we seemed to stand still in the queue forever. When we finally got to the loading area, it looked like they were occasionally sending a boat with no one in it down the ramp. We were scratching our heads over that one.
It used to be a fast loader. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore since FP+ came around. I've not seen a short line there since it has been introduced.

I went with the same entrée: the “croque monsieur” with “béchamel” and “pommes frites”. Know what the difference is between that and a hot ham & cheese sandwich with fries? About $7, as each one of these set us back $13.99.
If you change the name of something to sound French, then you can charge anything for it.

I like this angle -- don't think I've seen it in a TR before.

Hey, thanks! It's hard to come up with something no one around here has seen before.

Everybody always says that (that it's a fast loader), but I always seem to get the experience you described. Probably because our visits have always been during the busier times.

Maybe FP+ changed things as well.

Bummer. (Us too, by the way.) It looks like you would be free to eat without silverware in there since it's all beastly and everything.

Now, why didn't I think of that? I'll have to try it next time. We'll sit on the floor.

I'd agree with that. It's cool to see, but I wouldn't need to eat there all the time.

Seems like the majority opinion here.

Thanks for italicizing "everything".

I try to note when I'm intentionally making stuff up. You guys are good at calling me out when I screw something else up.

::yes:: Kids these days aren't allowed to have that kind of fun anymore.

Then again... they get to keep their hands and feet, so... fair trade-off.

I guess. But then again, kids are always good at discovering new ways to get into trouble.

I've seen that.
I think it's gonna be the energy source of the future.

I'll get right on it!

It was good, but.... maybe a bit too much of a good thing?
It was a lot of sweet.

That lemon meringue looked good.
If I go there again I'd probably get that next time.

I've heard mixed reviews on the gray stuff overall. I'd probably have asked for it if they were still giving it away for free.

I like it!

I think I first heard that one from a CM at the Whispering Canyon Cafe.

You'd like to do more than 2 rides, but getting those 2 knocked out during that hour is a pretty big success!

It's worth it not having to wait in those lines!

It used to be a fast loader. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore since FP+ came around. I've not seen a short line there since it has been introduced.

Maybe that changed things. It definitely seemed to increase wait times everywhere else.

If you change the name of something to sound French, then you can charge anything for it.
