Lots of hugs and prayers being sent your way

So sorry about your mom-- lots of prayers from this house.![]()
Queen, so sorry to hear about your Mom! My mom had a triple bypass years ago and it was very successful - so keep that in your thoughts, and let me know if u need a shoulder or an ear ( to cry on or to listen, not literally - I am really quite fond of both body parts!) Hope I made you smile - hang in there - I am sending positive energy and good thoughts your way!
I am so sorry to hear about your mom. We are sending prayers and hugs![]()
So sorry to hear about your mom. How old is she? I will keep her and your family in my thoughts and in my prayers.
Your mom sounds like a wise woman and I agree that you should go ahead with your plans and your trip. She would probably feel a lot of guilt if she prevented you from going.
Hopefully, the decisions your family have to make will become clearer after you have talked to doctors and surgeons.
Good Luck.
I'll be thinking of you.![]()

Read your post this morning. Couldn't respond immediately. It's been quite a year for me with heart issues. My Dad and a good friend both had heart attacks and had stents put in... An aunt and an uncle both had open heart surgery... my DW's uncle had heart proplems and just passed away last week... so when I read your post... Geez, I'm kinda at a loss for words here... something that doesn't happen too often. Suffice it to say that I will definitely be thinking of you and your family (your family too, Purplepeg) during this difficult time.
I am so very sorry to hear of this. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs to all of you.
Ah, Queen and Jas. I am so sorry to read of this. please know that your Mum is in our prayers. Medical decisions are so hard to make. i pray that the meeting goes well and everyone can agree on the best course of action. Please know that we are all praying for your entire family. Big hugs!!
Last Monday our mom was admitted to Emergency...she has lung disease and a damaged heart valve from rheumatic fever as a child. This valve has haunted us since 2005. She went for an angiogram in April and was sent home with oxygen after the procedure....this shouldn`t have happened! Needless to say things aren`t going well.
To correct this she requires open heart surgery and there is a lot to discuss as to the complications that can arise. She was all for the surgery last week until she heard she may not survive the surgery, if she does survive she could be in the hospital for up to 8 months etc etc etc...she now doesn`t know what she wants to do. We are to have a family meeting on Tuesday with all the doctors (surgeon, lung specialist and cardiologist) to decide. I have no idea what the prognosis is if she doesn`t have the surgery and the thought of surgery with all her current health problems is just plain scary.
I haven't been on in a while but saw something that lead me here to catch up with you. I'm so sorry to hear of your Mom's condition and the difficult decisions that have to be made. We will be praying for each of you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.![]()
This is very scary! I know first hand because this is the kind of work I do. There is always a risk of death and long hospitalization with this type of heart surgery. Make sure you have the surgeon/cardiologist specifically address each one of her risk factors. Is it her aortic or mitral valve that is affected?
1. Lung Disease - What do they think is the chance she will come off the ventilator successfully. This is very important. Find out exactly how bad her lungs are. Does she have emphysema and how bad is it. I assume she does if she is on O2. But people with emphysema have surgery all the time, so its a matter of how far progressed it is.
2. Kidneys - Does you mom have normal kidney function. IF not, what is her risk for developing Acute Renal Failure.
3. Neurological - Does your mom have a history of stroke, mini stroke, or any other neurologic disease.
4. Any other medical problems that she has that can affect wound healing, predispose to increased risk of infection, ect. Also - how mobile is she? Does she have deficits that will affect her rehabilitation? Also - age - that is important to take into consideration.
5. They should be able to give you an estimated percentage for chance of complications and chance of not surviving.
6. Find out what her ventricular function is like (normal is 55- 60%). The lower it is, the higher her risk for complications and death. Find out if her right ventricle works well. If it doesn't than that is a poor prognostic sign.
7. Does your mom have coronary artery disease? Does she also need bypass grafts. This makes the surgery more risky. Also - find out if any of her other heart valves are affected.
8. Last, but certainly not least, find out your mother's wishes. Sometimes people just don't want to undergo a surgery of this magnitude when the benefits outweigh the risks.
Make sure you ask.....DO THE BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE RISKS?
I know this sounds very clinical, but I think you need to take this approach when you are in this type of situation. Good Luck and please feel free to ask me any questions. I'll be thinking of you.
