We were in WDW 5/18-5/26. Included in our little group were DH, myself, and DD4. On the first night we were meeting two other families for dinner so our group for that dinner was 8 with the ages varying from 4 to retirement.

You’ll see our dinner choices are heavy on the buffet and family style meals. We do this because it works well for our family dynamic. Getting a 4 year old, even a well behaved 4 year old like ours, to linger 90+ minutes for a meal is tough. It’s her vacation too so we went heavy on the buffets and family style which was fine.

I had originally planned on doing a full-blown dining review with pictures of the food, etc. But when it came down to it, busting out with the camera broke the flow and relaxation for us so I didn’t take any pictures. I’m sorry for that.

I’ll include our experience by day referencing both counter and table service. I’m not a food critic nor a very good cook so I won’t be able to tell you the names of the spices or how things are cooked. I will tell you if we liked it and hopefully that will do.

Here's the restaurants I'll cover:
Boma (this post, #1)
Pizzafari (this post, #1)
Cape May (this post, #1)
Crystal Palace (Post #17)
Pecos Bill's (Post #17)
Mara (Post #17)
Cantina San Angel (Post #26)
LeCellier(Post #26)
Earl of Sandwich (Post #27)
Sci-Fi Diner (Post #27)
Columbia Harbour House
Liberty Tree Tavern
'Ohana
Coral Reef
Cinderella's Table

Friday 5/18
6:40 ADR Boma: This was our arrival night and we ended up being together and ready to eat sooner than our ADR so we checked in early at 6:10. They told us it may not be possible to seat us for our ADR earlier but they would try. Thinking it was going to take awhile we wandered out towards the pool and no sooner did we reach the pool than the buzzer went off.

The restaurant has a neat feel to it but it was loud and bustling. If you want quiet and relaxation this is not the place to go. Try Jiko next door, it looked quiet and relaxing.

I think this is the largest and most diverse buffet I have ever seen in my life. I tried just about everything on the menu just to give it a shot. I thought the flavoring on much of the non-American fare to have a sweet and spicy (but not hot) flavor to it that I enjoyed thoroughly.

The soups were out of this world. I made one trip just for the soups – they had something like five that night. The squash and crab were my favorites. The Durban spiced chicken was awesome and I had three servings. The only thing I didn’t enjoy the entire evening was the watermelon rind salad that I’ve always heard raves about. Yuck! Not a single person in our group liked it. But that’s okay because it leaves more for the folks that do enjoy it.

For dessert the favorite for all ages were the Zebra Domes. The rest of the selections left a bit to be desired. The banana canolli had delicious fresh filling but stale crust, the cakes and cookies were dry and the puddings not sweet enough. We were surprised that a buffet that had hit a homerun with the entrées and side dishes could so thoroughly miss the boat on desserts. But like I said, the Zebra Domes were loved by all so we really didn’t need any other desserts.

The service was very good and we will do this again. Maybe not next trip but we will do it some time again. We’d give it 3½ out of 5.

Saturday 5/19
Lunch Pizzafari: Normally I eat at Tusker House when I’m in AK and that was what I had planned but we just finished FOLK and were famished. It was only a couple minutes after 11:00 so there wasn’t much of a line. Unfortunately, once you pay the service is like molasses. They even got the order wrong and we had to get it corrected. But it was okay. Once we got our food we ate in the empty dining room with the four seasons. It was really relaxing. By the time we left there were another half dozen tables full.

I had a cheese pizza, DH pepperoni and we both got frozen lemonade for dessert. The pizza was piping hot and just out of the oven (maybe that’s what took so long) and tasted pretty good. They actually had a decent amount of cheese which is sometimes a rarity when you get those personal pizzas. And there wasn’t too much sauce. I had heard the DDP would include a salad with this meal but it did not. That was fine because we ended up full instead of over-stuffed.

DD got the kids’ meal with PB&J, applesauce, and chocolate pudding and was a member of the clean plate club. I know a lot of people don’t like the new kids selections but my DD is going through a stage where she only wants to eat certain things so the meals offered worked fine for us.

We give it 3½ out of 5.

Dinner Cape May 5:40: We checked in at 5:30 and were told they would call us when ready. No sooner had we sat down than we were called. On our way to the table we were walked through the buffet. The atmosphere is charming and the food was excellent.

Of course I gorged myself on steamed clams and mussels. DH does not like seafood but there was more than enough on this buffet for him. At the end of the week this was one of his top three meals for the week. So if you have a non-seafood lover, don’t have any fear.

They also have a kid section with chicken fingers, pizza, and mac and cheese for kids.

I do find it unusual they call it a clam bake and yet there are only steamed clams on the menu. But maybe it’s me and my experience at clam bakes has been different than the definition of a New England clam bake. It doesn’t matter because the food was excellent and I was pleased.

In addition to the clams I also enjoyed a pretty wide variety of fresh fruit, pasta, and chicken. I thought the ribs were very good and the meat just fell off the bone. The sauce was sweet but not too much and I had seconds of those as well. Their pasta dish of the day (I forgot what it was called) was fantastic – it was a penne pasta in cheese sauce with seafood in it. Yum.

For dessert we tried a little bit of everything with the key lime tart being my favorite, DH like the brownie, and DD loved the chocolate chip cookie. We literally rolled out of there and DH complained all night long how he was uncomfortable from eating too much. That’ll show him to exercise some restraint.

I’d give it 4 out of 5 while DH thinks it was 4 ½ out of 5. Needless to say we'll be doing it next trip.

More to come.

Thanks, latexscooter. We like Disney buffets, too. Sometimes in the real world buffets can be kinda gross, with food that's sat out too long, but our WDW experiences are such that because of the volume of eaters food gets replenished frequently.

There's something about Boma's soups, isn't there? That's always such a pleasant change of pace from typical fare.

What a great start, we are huge buffet fans and Cape May is DH favorite because of the steamed littlenecks. Glad to hear about Boma, we are going there for the first time in Oct.

Excellent ~ Looking forward to reading more:thumbsup2

Enjoying your reviews, looking forward to more. DH just found out that they have ribs at Cape May Cafe. Guess where we're eating next trip? ;) Glad to hear that the ribs were good and that the other stuff was good too. pluto:

We had our WDW vacation from 5/21 tp 5/25 and also did the buffets and family style, mostly because my 9 y/o is such a little gourmet I knew he wouldn't be satisfied with mac and cheese while we ate more exotic things! We also enjoyed Boma, I liked the tirimisu type dessert ( can't remember the name but it had alcohol in it) and the zebra domes were good. I liked the Mulliga ? soup.
We loved Cape May also but although all the other staff seemed really nice, we got a terrible waiter! He never returned to refill drinks, was almost rude and I really feel it was because we were on the DDP. We will be returning next May because the food is really good( love those Oreo dome desserts) but I really hope to get a different waiter.

I took my son to a lot of buffets when he was little too! It seems to work out better, not having to wait for service. You eat and get out before anyone gets hurt! :lmao:

Thank you for the review! I'm really enjoying it! :goodvibes

That's such a bummer you had bad service. We had a really nice lady that refilled our drinks countless times. We were on the DDP and got excellent service throughout our stay at every restaurant - espcially Coral Reef. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll be posting the next installment shortly.

Oreo desserts? We didn't have those the night we were there or I would have scooped it up. Well, there's another reason to come back.

I laughed when you said that you were going to write a full review. I understood exactly what you meant. I am amazed and grateful that people write some of the elaborate reviews that they do! Yours is great!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to read more. I love your review on Cape May. I'm so looking forward to eating there

looking forward to your review of Coral Reef. We are returning again next May but with my DD and DGD's this time. It will be the first trip for them so I want it to be great!
I was pleased with CS for kids. I had no problem with getting a cookie for my DS rather than the SF jello.
Can't wait to read more!

We've booked lots of buffets for the same reason. Looking forward to reading about the rest.

Great reviews so far - looking forward to more. We may be almost sold on Cape May now, thanks to your review. We are a family of non-seafood eaters but have consistently read good things about the buffet at BC :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I'll be posting the next installment shortly.

Crystal Palace Breakfast, Pecos Bill’s, and Mara

We had an 8:05 ADR for Crystal Palace with the Magic Kingdom opening at 9:00. It was our goal to see characters, eat, and still make rope drop at 9:00 – which we did make.

We got to the park and were directed to the breakfast queue area which is to the right side of the park gates. Since the families that do the breakfasts prior to park opening miss the opening show, CM did their own little park opening just for our group. They gave all the kids pixie dust (Mickey confetti), did a little countdown, and had them throw their dust in the air while making a wish. This took place at about 7:45.

Just before this our batteries died on the camera so we had to run and buy some more at the store that was right there ($16.00 for 4 AAA, YUCK!). As a result, we ended up being the last family through and DH missed the pixie dust ceremony.

You can pick up a stroller if needed even though the park isn’t officially open and we did this. We took pictures on the empty Main Street and headed over to the Crystal Palace where we took our place just about last in line for check-in. I thought this would effect when we would be called but it does not. They call you according to the ADR even if you were the last to check-in. I’m sure this is different once CP opens, but for the first service of the day it’s by ADR time.

They began calling the families and we were about the 3rd family called. We knew it was our turn before they even (tried) to say our names because we have a difficult Polish last name and we saw the servers and host staff conferring on it. But they got the name right which gave them bonus points.

Our server, Ariel (a guy), met us and took us through the buffet – which was HUGE – before seating us in the lovely dining area to the left of the buffet. Once we were seated he explained how the characters would be coming around and made a recommendation as to where our daughter should sit for ease in picture taking, etc. This was very useful information and we appreciated he took the time to tell us. Ariel took our drink orders and said to go help ourselves. I gave him our room card and asked him to process our payment right away so when we were ready to leave we could bolt. He was fine with doing that and I recommend doing the same if you’re ever going to have an 8:05 and want to hit a 9:00 rope drop.

The food here was delicious. I tried the stuffed French toast that everyone talks about and I did enjoy it but I’m not a huge fan of fried breakfast foods so I didn’t get seconds. There was a huge variety of fresh fruit (both whole and sliced) and pastries including about 5 different kinds of mini-muffins. They had eggs, hash browns, bacon (nice and crisp without being burnt), big fat sausage, breakfast casseroles (both sweet and fruity and the more traditional egg & potato), made to order omelets, waffles and a few other things I’m sure I’m forgetting.

For me the scene stealers were the scrambled eggs. I guess it was the simplicity of something so ordinary being so delicious. They were light and fluffy but had some other flavors in there. My husband said there was definitely milk or something dairy in it (he is allergic – not lactose intolerant but anaphylactic allergic). Regardless, I actually had three servings of eggs. But ultimately, even though I sampled a lot of things, I didn’t eat that much because I was so excited and distracted about the characters. I think when we do this breakfast again I will schedule it at a time where we can enjoy the meal more. The food was fresh and delicious and I really need more time than I had allotted myself to appreciate it.

We say Tigger, Piglet, Pooh, and Eeyore in that order. Before Pooh came they had a parade around the restaurant with the characters. DD loved it and joined in but be warned to keep an eye on your kid because it abruptly ends and your child could be on the other side of the restaurant. I knew exactly where my daughter was but she was across the room and although she just waited for me to come it was a little hectic getting to her.

And of course, this little parade took some time out of our eating and pushed the character interaction out a bit. But the characters do pick up where they left off so post-parade we saw Pooh and Eeyore almost immediately. We were able to leave at 8:55 and make our goal of 9:00 rope drop but like I said before, I wish I had given myself more time.

I’d give this a 4-4½ stars for breakfast because the service was excellent, the food delicious, and the character interaction fun. I will definitely do this again just a little bit later or with the plan to linger without the worry of rope drop.

Pecos Bill’s
Okay, let me start this by saying I have never had a good meal at PBs before (but in all fairness we’ve never had a terrible meal either). But it was the one and only sweltering hot day of our vacation and I needed to get my DH out of the sun.

It was early, about 11:15 or so. I ordered the chicken wrap with French fries, large soda, and a peanut butter brownie. DH ordered the pulled pork sandwich with French fries and beans, soda, and a peanut butter brownie. DD4 ordered the kid’s meal with carrots, apple juice and a chocolate pudding.

Let me put a couple comments here about the dining plan for those that are not so familiar. We’ve used the plan before and have always enjoyed it without problem and it’s been a good fit for my family. I’m not interested in debating it’s worthiness with anyone. But when you order an adult meal with the plan know that they will always give you a regular size drink unless you ask for a large. So make sure you ask for a large when you order. DH would routinely forget but I’d always correct him and that ends up being a big difference. The only place that I have experienced where they will not give you the large drink was Cantina San Angel. Also, the kids meal isn’t all that bad. I know people are all worked up about it and I’m sure for older kids it might be an issue. But I have a 4 year old that really thinks that the four basic food groups are chicken nuggets, applesauce, bologna, and hotdogs. Very simple. So, in our experience on this trip and previous the counter service kids meals were great. And she never once had to have the SF Jell-o everyone is all worked up about. To be honest, unless it’s a holiday my kid NEVER gets a dessert so even if she could only get SF Jell-o she’d be thrilled. But for this trip every CS dessert was either a chocolate chip cookie or a chocolate pudding. Okay, I’m done with that comment.

The only person who was thrilled with their food was my DD and again, she was a member of the clean plate club. Why not, it had two of her 4 food groups in there. My “wrap” was more like a lettuce in a loose tortilla with 2-3 bite size pieces of unseasoned chicken - very bland and disappointing. But to give credit its due the lettuce was fresh. The French fries were excellent. DH said his pulled pork wasn’t that good and ended up eating half. We both gave our peanut butter brownies away to people next to us. We left PBs hungry (except my daughter).

We would give this meal 1 star for the adult meals. We’re going to swear this off for the next couple years. Since we’ve sworn off Cosmic Ray’s for life we’re really going to stick with CHH for our meals going forward when we’re in the MK.

Mara
After not really eating much today we were starving that evening and I decided I wanted something hearty that would stick to my ribs. So we went to Mara and I ordered a cheeseburger with FF, H2O, and a bowl of fresh fruit for dessert (that I ate for breakfast the next morning.) DH ordered the same thing but got a Mickey rice crispy treat. And DD4 got the kids meal chicken strips, applesauce, apple juice, and chocolate pudding. They cooked everything while we waited and we took it up to the room where we ate our room on the balcony and finally felt satisfied.

We ate at Mara several times this trip and for CS I’d give it a sturdy 3 star rating. I like the food court at POFQ better (it’s my favorite of all the resorts I’ve tried) but Mara certainly did the trick and we never went hungry.

The cookies and pudding with the kids' meals is new. Before they could only get sugar free jello. My kids love jello-the problem was not have any choices. Disney saw that this wasn't working, and they are currently updating the kids' menus.

I love, love, love early breakfast at Crystal Palace. To me, it's all about walking into an empty MK and savouring the peace and quiet. And then it's all about the puffed french toast, which I think is awesome.

Never tried Pecos Bills before but we're huge fans of CHH - love the Captains Special :thumbsup2

Really enjoying your reviews :)
