The Yorktown Battlefield!

Local legend holds that General Cornwallis sheltered in this cave on the bank of the York River during the artillery bombardment of Yorktown.

Since thoroughly touring the amazing battlefields, trails, and Victory Center in Yorktown would take awhile, I think we’ll move on to a sister town in our historical triangle, Jamestown.

Many a elementary field trips happen here. And why not! It’s amazing and so very interesting!

In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of Virginia’s James River. They were sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, whose stockholders hoped to make a profit from the resources of the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships in its early years, but managed to endure, earning the distinction of being America’s first permanent English colony.

Lets see......bombing....war....seige....possibility of death....yeah this is where I would be!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Heck, the President has his bunker, right???
Either that or way up in an airplane!!

I love caves and history.
You would be surprised how much American history is (or was) taught up here (its been quite a while).

I cannot get the weather in Toronto when down in DisneyWorld!!
But I know what the weather is in Orlando every night from home!!

Next, just a hop, skip and a jump over to Williamsburg. Williamsburg came to pass subsequent to the first English settlement at Jamestown. Jamestown was first settled in 1607. It was set up to be the center of the Virginia Colony’s government and commerce. However, the inhospitable swampy and insect ridden terrain at Jamestown eventually drove the settlers to higher ground to a place called Middle Plantation. Fearing the potential for epidemics and feeling the capitol of America’s largest colony should be in a more grand setting a successful lobbying effort was made to move the settlement five miles inland to Middle Plantation.
The original settlement of Middle Plantation had grown up around a 17th century palisade built as a defense against Indian attack. By 1690 it was a small village composed of stores, mills, a tavern, a church, and assorted homes. In reality, there was nothing grand about it, but it sat on higher ground and had access to both the James and York Rivers. When the Jamestown Statehouse burned for the fourth time in 1698, the village of Middle Plantation became the locus for colonists who envisioned a capitol city equal to their aspirations. The name Middle Plantation, more rural that regal, was changed to Williamsburg in honor of William III, King of England, and building began.

Eric and I were saying the same thing tonight! I had a metal swingset that tipped over and other than a swampy in ground pool, the preformed plastic kind was it!

Thank you, E & A, for your great pics. I have been to half those places before and my ex-father-in-law was from Newport News. He read as a young man, before coming to Bremerton to work in the shipyard, that Puget Sound freezes over every winter. HA!!
Anyway it's nice to see new and old mixed with my memories of the river, the shipyard and the beautiful State. Mahalo!

Well, maybe since we are all only virtually there, we could play on it too!?!

Ah yes.....the old metal swingset.
Complete with slide in my case.
Metal slide that is, before plastic.
Pour water down it to cool it off in the summer and then have to let it dry, or dry it off, and then go!!!

Memmmmmmorieeeessss.....Like the corners of my minddddd....

All right, that’s it for the history lesson kids. Oh, but we’re not done yet! Any thrill seekers out there! Now I love a Big Thunder Mountain.....but for roller coaster enthusiasts you MUST come to Busch Gardens Williamsburg! So grab your fanny packs, your sneakers, and some sunblock......LET’S GO!

I don't think I did it right....but copy and paste if you're interested.

Now it's time for those barf bags......

Busch Gardens is really nice! Major thrill rides and fun attractions...and this really is a gorgeous park. For BTM, MadBrad, and 3guys, the Busch Brewery give tours and tasting.......we’ll meet you back here!
Interesting side note: Eric's sister-company, Lockwood Brothers, actually built all those rollercoasters! Like literally with their heavy hauling cranes and stuff...like enormous tinker toys!

We’re headed across the street to Water Country USA! Swimsuits anyone?

map_WaterCountry.jpg

We love it here. It's one of our favorite places to spend the summer time weekends. Ok, Dawson is throwing a tantrum...time for those earplugs for all of you while I go be mommy for a bit.

Grab a beach chair, spread out your towel, and have a churro. I'll be back in a bit......

Thanks for the delightful dinner! I am regretting the lasagne only a little after that last ride...

Ok, got D-Man under control....

So, we'll be touring more tomorrow....back to where I grew up a few miles away. More to see...

As we pull out of the parking lot of Water Country and head back to our house where we'll have a good 'ol slumber party, please look to your right as we pass the President’s Park. This park has a giant 18-20 foot bust of each of our President’s with some known, and unknown facts about each of them. For today though we’ll just wave as we pass. I don't know about you....but I'm pooped! (no giggling from the back seat there 3guys)

We will be here for a while right?...........Right???????????

Man.... the pics of Williamsburg and Busch Gardens brought back some memories.... in the early 90's my father was stationed at Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD.... so we made many a trip to the Williamsburg area. Love it mom!!!!
