We Be Trippin': The Great DIS-nee Road Trip

Living in the south does have its draw backs. I really can't remember the last time we had any significant amount of snow. My DD has seen it snow a couple of inches before, but my DS has only seen it snow enough to cover the ground. I don't think he's ever had the chance to make a snow man.

Trust me, snow is a novelty to those in the south, but when you have to LIVE with it for 4-5 months it can be quite depressing.
Thank God for SPRING!!!!

We might want to partake in some wonderful beef jerky while we are in Canada, eh?

I had never heard of this type before so I googled it to see if was only out west and lo and behold it is made in Brantford Ontario, about 1hr 45mins from home. I may have to look for it and give it a try, as I love jerky.
The bus will be passing close by if we need to stop.

Niagara Falls, NY, USA and Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Loading_Niagara_Falls_Live.gif

I have included both cities as they are both based on one thing, THE FALLS!!!

Lets get a show of hands who has been here before
.....anyone....anyone.....Bueller...

(Sorry, I laughed so hard when someone else posted that on the CMO thread I had to use it)

I'm not much of a typer so I will be plagiarizing some comments from websites.
There is so much history about the Falls, so much technical info and sites to see that it would just be an incredibally long (and possibly boring) post.

In a nutshell...

"Born around 12,000 years ago, Niagara Falls is a set of massive waterfalls located on the Niagara River, on the border between Canada and the United States."
"The Falls are comprised of three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the smaller, adjacent Bridal Veil Falls. The crescent-shaped Horseshoe Falls is also known as the Canadian Falls as it is located mostly on the Canadian side of the border."

usgs_survey.jpg

Niagara_falls_aerialid.jpg

"Niagara Falls is divided into the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls (which includes the Bridal Veil). The Horseshoe Falls drop about 173 feet (53 m)."

HorseshoefromSkylon.jpg

"The American Falls drop about 70 feet (21 m) before reaching a jumble of fallen rocks that were deposited by a massive rock slide in 1954."

niagara-falls-american-falls.jpg

"The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 2,600 feet (792 m) wide, while the American Falls are 1,060 feet (323 m) wide. The volume of water approaching the falls during peak flow season is 202,000 cubic feet per second (5,720 m³/s)....Since the flow is a direct function of the Lake Erie water elevation, it typically peaks in late spring or early summer. During the summer months, 100,000 cubic feet per second (2,832 m³/s) of water actually traverses the Falls, some 90% of which goes over the Horseshoe Falls, while the balance is diverted to hydroelectric facilities. This is accomplished by employing a weir with movable gates upstream from the Horseshoe Falls. The Falls flow is further halved at night, and during the low tourist season in the winter, remains a flat 50,000 cubic feet per second (1,416 m³/s). Water diversion is regulated by the 1950 Niagara Treaty and is administered by the International Niagara Board of Control (IJC). Viewpoints on the American shore generally are astride or behind the falls. The falls face directly toward the Canadian shore. Thus, the most complete views of Niagara Falls are available from the Canadian shoreline. It is about a two hour drive from Toronto."

See what I mean....Phew...

"The Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Managing the balance between recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 1800s."

"It’s estimated that 16 daredevils have gone over the Falls and five have died. Some have even gone over twice."
"The first person to go over the Falls in a barrel and survive was a 63 year old female schoolteacher."

Niagara-Taylor.jpg

"High wire tightrope acts used to be performed across the river. Most notably was "Blondin" who once actually carried his manager across on his back, stopping midway to rest !"

"The Maid of the Mist boat has been carrying visitors, including heads of state and movie stars, below the Falls since 1846. There is now a small fleet of the boats to accommodate the tourist trade."

pic_wonder_niagara_falls_lg.jpg

Now, you may ask yourself "has the flow ever stopped over the Falls?"

The answer would be YES!!

"The flow of water was stopped completely over both falls on March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam in the upper river for several hours. This is the only known time to have occurred. The Falls did not actually freeze over, but the flow was stopped to the point where people actually walked out and recovered artifacts from the riverbed!"

niagara_falls_1911.jpg

"The flow over the American Falls was stopped completely for several months in 1969. The idea was to determine the feasibility of removing the large amount of loose rock from the base of the falls to enhance it's appearance. In the end the final decision was that the expense would be too great."

American_Falls_1969_small.jpg

"Twenty percent of the worlds freshwater lies in the Great Lakes, and most flows over Niagara Falls."

As far as Tourism is concerned there is "Clifton Hill".
"The Clifton Hill Tourist District. This area includes Clifton Hill, Falls Avenue, Victoria Avenue, Center Street and Bender Street.
Today Clifton Hill is the vibrant and colourful heart of the amusement and entertainment center of Niagara Falls. It consisting of many museums, restaurants, attractions and activities for all ages. It is the second busiest tourist sector next to the majestic Falls of Niagara themselves.
At night "THE HILL" as it is known to the our many citizens and visitors, becomes a hub of nightlife activities consisting of pulsating sounds of music and a magical world of sparkling and glittering lights."

I hope you have enjoyed the little history lesson and tour.
I was last in NF while passing through on our honeymoon 9 yrs ago.
As far as restaurants and other sites, I was there for 1 day and other than the falls, Clifton Hill, and the inside of the hotel room, well...didnt see much else!!!
Before our honeymoon, I may have been 14 with the parental units.
It is really strange how someone can be so close to such a natural wonder and just not go there.
I HAVE gone through at night, or just not stop, in those years in between on my way down south, though!

Part 2 - the road to Toronto, is next.
But I have to get back to chores so it may be a little later on today.

It looks so beautiful there! I've always wanted to go. The live webcam feed was pretty cool!

Hey - wasn't the Maid of the Mist featured in Bruce Almighty??

maid_of_the_mist.jpg

(... 'Still plenty of room on the Party Bus! ::yes:: Any more takers? :rolleyes1 )

I'll join! I live in Kent, England, but I see you're heading to Leeds so I reckon we could take a quick de-tour, maybe even hope across the channel and take a trip to DLRP!!... either that or I'll sit on the bus watching and exploring all the sites, both sound good to me!

I've been a lurker for all of your threads but haven't ever managed to post anything because I lost track numerous times!! :rotfl:

Anyways thanks for the trips so far, having not explored much of the USA apart from WDW I find it all very interesting!!! :)

I just wanted to say that I am *loving* the road trip! Of course, HMF is making me sad with the Boston pics. We went to Boston last year for the Marathon. The plan was to go a few days early and do some sightseeing. Of course, the weather was nasty (a nor'easter). We saw so little of Boston (Faneuil Hall and the Constitution mostly) that all those pictures are making me wish we had seen more.

Excellent job, 3guys!

Wow - I've got to go see that someday. In fact, a 63 year old female school teacher? That sounds like a challenge to me! Hmmmm, I think I know what I'll be doing when I'm 64!!!!!

And Ripley's believe it or not museum? too cool!

Disneyhockeymad: WELCOME!:welcome:

That's so cool - after visiting Miss Stitch in Leeds, we can swing by and see you in Kent!

And are you really "hockey mad?"

Welcome DisneyHockeyMad (DHM, for short). We'd love to see the sights over the pond!

3Guys -- wow, those photos of Niagra Falls were amazing. I've never been there but am fascinated by them and all their history (hint for future road trip post...)

"The first person to go over the Falls in a barrel and survive was a 63 year old female schoolteacher."

Seriously?? What did she do? Wake up one day and decide, you know, I teach all these kids in a one-room schoolhouse and that's not enough of an adventure for me...I'll think I'll go over the falls in a barrel!

Great job 3Guys!!

Excellent job, 3guys!

Agreed! ::yes:: (Bravo! Bravo!)

Well... It's always good to have goals!

You pursue your Niagara-Falls-in-a-barrel dream, while I chase after my lofty goal of becoming a Zamboni driver [near Disney World, of course! :teeth:]. Hmmmm... I wonder if Disney brass would consider opening an ice-show somewhere inside the Parks. 'Sure would make things a lot easier... ;)

And are you really "hockey mad?"

Yer I guess you could say that! :) Love my hockey... not as much as Disney though! I'm guessing the hockey I like is different to the hockey you might be thinking of though... ice hockey?! I think the hockey that I love is called field hockey?!!!

Most excellent! Welcome aboard, disneyhockeymad. :wave2:

I'll add you to the itinerary right now! This Party Bus is headed to Europe.... :teeth: (And, you're right: A brief "field trip" to Disneyland Resort Paris would be quite appropriate, given the circumstances!)

Ummm, errrr, sorry! Forgot about field hockey!

I lived in London for a year, teaching 4th and 5th years. I should have remembered having to separate them from fighting with their sticks! :rotfl2:

Seriously, I've always wanted to go back for a visit to England, so I'm excited our trip will include a hop across the Atlantic!

Agreed! ::yes:: (Bravo! Bravo!)

Well... It's always good to have goals!

You pursue your Niagra-Falls-in-a-barrel dream, while I chase after my lofty goal of becoming a Zamboni driver [near Disney World, of course! :teeth:]. Hmmmm... I wonder if Disney brass would consider opening an ice-show somewhere inside the Parks. 'Sure would make things a lot easier... ;)

I've always been goal-oriented!

Alright, then...Niagra Falls in 2024...here I come!

:rotfl2: that sounds normal! People, especially kids, seem to like hitting others with the sticks, no idea why!! :rotfl:
Oooh I live about an hour from London, I was thinking of including it in my tour, now definately I will to bring back memories! :thumbsup2

Yay! I can hardly wait!

And Kent is so beautiful, and I have an affinity for it - I lived in Kentish Town while in London. Of course, I wasn't in a posh flat - it was pretty plain - but being so close to the Hampstead Heath was fabulous. I didn't have any money, but I could walk to the Heath for free!

That's the neat thing about a big city like London - even when you're broke, the buses are cheap, and there are lots of things to see and do that don't cost.

Glad you joined our little trip!

Cat

Glad I suggested Disney Paris... I know that place like the back of my hand so I'd be more than happy to help! :thumbsup2

Oh, good! :woohoo:

Admittedly, you might have to carry the DLRP part. (Maybe you could highlight your favorite rides/attractions, and folks could submit questions about the Park. For example, what are some of the things (besides location and language, of course ;) ) that distinguish Disneyland Resort Paris from the other Disney Resorts? 'Just a thought, though...)

Hi all,

Sorry I havent posted for a few days, been working too hard:rotfl:

Ive really enjoyed the trip so far, we have already been to some great places and have lots more to go.

Im so glad we will be visiting another stop in the UK, and also DLP. I am planning a trip to DLP next year and would love to have a pre-visit.

Looking forward to the next stop

I've never been to Niagra Falls before... but I've wanted to... 3guys info has made me want to go even more now.
