We Be Trippin': The Great DIS-nee Road Trip

It looks so beautiful there! I've always wanted to go. The live webcam feed was pretty cool!

Hey - wasn't the Maid of the Mist featured in Bruce Almighty??

maid_of_the_mist.jpg

That would be it!

I'll join! I live in Kent, England, but I see you're heading to Leeds so I reckon we could take a quick de-tour, maybe even hope across the channel and take a trip to DLRP!!... either that or I'll sit on the bus watching and exploring all the sites, both sound good to me!

I've been a lurker for all of your threads but haven't ever managed to post anything because I lost track numerous times!! :rotfl:

Anyways thanks for the trips so far, having not explored much of the USA apart from WDW I find it all very interesting!!! :)

Welcome aboard!
And Welcome to Canada at the moment!

Excellent job, 3guys!

Wow - I've got to go see that someday. In fact, a 63 year old female school teacher? That sounds like a challenge to me! Hmmmm, I think I know what I'll be doing when I'm 64!!!!!

And Ripley's believe it or not museum? too cool!

Disneyhockeymad: WELCOME!:welcome:

That's so cool - after visiting Miss Stitch in Leeds, we can swing by and see you in Kent!

And are you really "hockey mad?"

Thanks Cat!! more to come!!!
After the whole CMO thing, I believe you will be there at 64!!

Welcome DisneyHockeyMad (DHM, for short). We'd love to see the sights over the pond!

3Guys -- wow, those photos of Niagra Falls were amazing. I've never been there but am fascinated by them and all their history (hint for future road trip post...)

"The first person to go over the Falls in a barrel and survive was a 63 year old female schoolteacher."

Seriously?? What did she do? Wake up one day and decide, you know, I teach all these kids in a one-room schoolhouse and that's not enough of an adventure for me...I'll think I'll go over the falls in a barrel!

Great job 3Guys!!

Thanks Marshay!!
As far as the going over in a barrel thing....Yeah, makes you wonder, EH?

Agreed! ::yes:: (Bravo! Bravo!)

Well... It's always good to have goals!

You pursue your Niagra-Falls-in-a-barrel dream, while I chase after my lofty goal of becoming a Zamboni driver [near Disney World, of course! :teeth:]. Hmmmm... I wonder if Disney brass would consider opening an ice-show somewhere inside the Parks. 'Sure would make things a lot easier... ;)

Thanks Dis Geeks, I have been so busy that right now I dont have it in me to look for a pic of a Zamboni and put your avatar on it.
More stuff coming up at the end of this post!!

I've always been goal-oriented!

Alright, then...Niagra Falls in 2024...here I come!

Its marked on the calendar!!
Shall we start thinking of a name for that thread??:confused3

:rotfl2: that sounds normal! People, especially kids, seem to like hitting others with the sticks, no idea why!! :rotfl:
Oooh I live about an hour from London, I was thinking of including it in my tour, now definately I will to bring back memories! :thumbsup2

Oh, good! :woohoo:

Admittedly, you might have to carry the DLRP part. (Maybe you could highlight your favorite rides/attractions, and folks could submit questions about the Park. For example, what are some of the things (besides location and language, of course ;) ) that distinguish Disneyland Resort Paris from the other Disney Resorts? 'Just a thought, though...)

Looking forward to it!!!

OK, so after posting the first part and working in the backyard I thought "I have video of the Falls on our Honeymoon......hmmmmmmmmm...
So here are a few snippets that I just spent 2 hrs editing all the cra.....I mean stufffff out of.

I've never been to Niagra Falls before... but I've wanted to... 3guys info has made me want to go even more now.

Thanks HMF!
Toronto's next!

:woohoo: We have confirmed Miss Stitch's participation in our "Virtual" Road Trip! :woohoo: That means we will make a stop in Leeds, England! :thumbsup2

Where will we be leaving from and then landing??
Have to arrange landing strip times and all.....:)

Great pictures of the Falls! :thumbsup2 I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to water (an old childhood thing...and then a young adult thing) but it looks beautiful! I don't think I could ever even do a cruise. :confused3 Plus there's my whole cold induced urticaria thing. I'm a mess. Plus with the luck of the Fleagles, we would plan a trip and the Falls would cease to fall. ;) There'd be no scientific explanation and there would be major media coverage and they would interview everyone and all the tourists would be so upset, and then we'd leave and the falls would flow again. Yes...that's exactly how I see it.
So, we'll stay on the bus and watch from the window!

Great Videos! Thanks for taking all the time to edit, and post them. I so enjoyed them!

Also, I'm currently designing my barrel, I think I saw a couple places where I could hop in, when the time comes!

All of you will have to have a reunion road trip in 2024, so you can be there to watch. Once question...should I try to get an outfit like the schoolteacher's? :rotfl2:

New updated map....

Just let me know where I have to pick up the barrel with the truck!
Can I wear camo and black face stripes like a military exercise?

So, you get a little wet on the maid of the mist tour, do ya?:rotfl2:

Alright, then...Niagra Falls in 2024...here I come!

Hey Cat, just a couple of things you should know about before your "Niagra Falls in 2024" trip.

  1. Did you know that there is now a law against going over the Falls, referred to as "stunting without a license." The current fine is $10,000.
  2. As of 2004, 16 daredevils have made documented trips over Niagara Falls. Eleven have survived. That's only about a 69% survival rate!
  3. Although a barrel type float seems to be the way to go, there have been attemps to go over Niagars Falls in both a kayak and a jet ski.
  4. The most recent and probably the most shocking trip over the Falls was on October 3, 2003. Kirk Jones' plan didn't involve a barrel. It didn't even involve a life preserver. He simply climbed under the barrier and entered the river in his clothes. He floated down on his back and went over with no protection whatsoever. Miraculously, he survived, uninjured except for sore ribs. He said it was like being "in a giant tunnel going straight down, surrounded by water."

Mrs. Fleagle, I have a couple of interesting things to share with you too. I don't think ya'll would be the 1st to cause Niagara Falls to stop flowing!

Ever since records have been kept about the history of the Falls of Niagara, there have only been three occasions when the water flow over the Falls has been greatly reduced and/or restricted. They are as follows:

  1. Unfortunately, news reports in 1848 were stretchy at best. The exact times that Niagara Falls ran dry was not specifically recorded. It however began near midnight on March 29th 1848 and the early morning of March 30th 1848. The full effect of the ice jam upstream at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie did not take full effect until well into the day of March 30th. Residents awoke on the morning of March 30th to an eerie silence and realized something was amiss. People were drawn to the Falls to find that the water flow of the Niagara River had been reduced to a mere trickle. The water stopped flowing for approximately 30 - 40 hours before the flow of water at Niagara Falls had returned to normal on the late evening of March 31st and/or early morning hours of April1st 1848. On the night of March 31st 1848, the wind shifted and the ice dam at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie broke apart and the river flow returned to its normal rate.
  2. In 1953, the water over a portion of the Horseshoe Falls nearest the Table Rock Pavilion was stopped by the building of a series of coffer dams to allow for remedial work to be done to the edge of the Falls. This was done to allow a more even water flow and to slow the rate of erosion.
  3. In 1969, the US Army Corps of Engineers built a series of coffer dams which stopped or rather reduced the water flow over the American Falls to a mere trickle. This was done to allow a study of the rock formations at the crest of the Falls and to study the feasibility of whether there was any possible way to remove the rock (talus) at the base of the American Falls. In the end, the engineers decided to let mother nature take its course.

Ah, very interesting! :thumbsup2 Thanks for the cool facts!

Yay! I can hardly wait!

And Kent is so beautiful, and I have an affinity for it - I lived in Kentish Town while in London. Of course, I wasn't in a posh flat - it was pretty plain - but being so close to the Hampstead Heath was fabulous. I didn't have any money, but I could walk to the Heath for free!

That's the neat thing about a big city like London - even when you're broke, the buses are cheap, and there are lots of things to see and do that don't cost.

Glad you joined our little trip!

Cat
Thanks :) I agree, London is amazing, my friends and I met up there a week ago for the weekend and the most money we spent was in the restaurants, the travel is amazing!! :)

Oh, good!

Sounds good, I'd be happy to do that, I'm going back in September so it'll be nice to re-acquaint myself again!! I'm already working on a list! :thumbsup2

:woohoo: We have confirmed Miss Stitch's participation in our "Virtual" Road Trip! :woohoo: That means we will make a stop in Leeds, England! :thumbsup2

Yay! I'm so glad Miss Stitch is in! And that we get to go to England! :woohoo:

And Hi disneyhockeymad--so glad you are in also! I can't wait to visit London someday, and now because of you we get to see Disneyland Paris too! Oh if only this trip were real! :goodvibes Someday!!!

OMG CAT!!!!!! You in that barrel!!! I really laughed when I saw that! Well done! Perhaps we could have a fundraiser for the $10,000! Just to help with your dream of course! ;)

I'm serious...check it out!!!!

It very well could be Dumbo...he is the 8th Wonder of the World you know!

You've done a great job taking us along 3g&g! I would very much like to see Canada sometime!

And I also loved seeing all the sights of yours HMFan! My favorite part was touring in the convertibles you got for us! So much fun!!! Great idea!

Before we leave Niagara Falls, I thought I would mention that it now has a Great Wolf Lodge, as do some of the DISers have close by to their locations, Kansas City KS, Mason OH, Pocono Mountains PA, Sandusky OH, Traverse City MI, Williamsburg VA, Wisconsin Dells WI, Grapevine TX, Grand Mound WA, and Concord NC.
Our neighbours went last week and loved it!
Although they did comment on the expense of it....

Now on to Toronto.
On the way we pass by Hamilton Ontario.

http://www.myhamilton.ca/myhamilton/TourismAndVisitorInfo/

The steel mill capital of Ontario and (according to the 2001 Census) the eighth largest city in Canada.
We will see it to our left from the Burlington Bay Bridge as we pass over it while travelling along the Queen Elizabeth Way.

qew-59_lg.jpg

qew-130a_lg.jpg

Sorry but I cant find a pic of it from the bridge.

"The Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway, originally called the Burlington Bay Skyway, is a pair of high-level freeway bridges located in Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The Skyway, as it locally known, is part of the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) highway linking Fort Erie with Toronto.
"The first bridge was completed in 1958 and officially opened 30 October 1958. When traffic volume became more than the bridge could accommodate in the early eighties, the bridge was twinned. The new skyway was opened in 11 October 1985. It is also the site of Ontario's first freeway traffic management system which incorporates traffic cameras and changeable message signs. The first bridge is 36m (118 ft) high and 2560m (8397 ft, 8 in) long from abatement to abatement. The second bridge is 400m (1300 ft) shorter. The skyway is 30m (97 ft) wide."

Hamilton has many things to do or see and I will just post some links, as :cutie: we are only passing by.

Just to name a few.

One thing I do want to mention is the Bruce Trail.
It is 1200km (745 miles!) long from Niagara Falls to Tobermory.

http://brucetrail.wholemap.com/

I have only followed this trail at its northern end to Tobermory, during family camping trips to Cypress Lake National Park, one of our favourite places.
the water in Georgian Bay at this point is so clear that you can easily see down 30-40', and the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment are beautiful.
I have my own pics of this but not on digital, so Oh well.

Next stop TO!!
Although dont know when I will get back, still working around the house.

Looking back on this post, all the stuff I link to and I post pictures of a bridge...:confused3 :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'm still at the Royal Botantanical Gardens...I'll catch up with you all later!:goodvibes
