We Are the World Debut!!!!

I thought it was just because I didn't recognize many of the people, but I'm really thinking it just also wasn't very good.

They used the auto-tune on Celine's part too. But I've always thought he voice stunk!

I thought that Janet was horrible. Her mouth wasn't even close to the words that were being sung.

I must really be old because I didn't recognize a lot of the people.

Well, I for one was not very impressed with it. I admit I really liked the first one and this one just kind of lost me. My friend who was here watching too was not impressed either.

What??? People liked it? It was AWFUL. Tragically, depressingly, ridiculously awful. The singers were off the beat the entire time, the auto-tuned voices, the RAPPING, the hip hop, that stupid kid in the begginning. That one weird guy screaming in it. The producers need to be shot.

It was an embarassmet.

Totally agree.

I didn't even realize she was supposed to be singing. It looked like she was talking but they weren't playing the sound.

Watched the shorter version on TV last night, the longer version in a PP's link.

I would give it about a 5-6 out of 10. The original, a 9.

I can not stand rap, :sad2: they all (rap guys) (this recording, or any) sound like they do not have an ounce of brains in their heads. The auto-tune was unneeded. The mocking was wrong. The kid in the beginning was like . The screeching guy was terrible.

The original tune and lyrics were and are great; the idea behind it was and is great. The delivery was great, 25 years ago, impaired this time around.

If it raises a lot of money for Haiti, it is good!!

Man has it been 25 years?? I did not care for this new version. I didn't know very many of the singers. It would have been cool to blend old and new. Really didn't like the guy trying to sing like Ray Charles at all.

Guess you never saw the movie "Ray."

Wasn't very impressed. The longer version was better than the shorter version. Maybe cause Im old and didn't recognize half of those people, but I definately prefer the original to this one. Hope it raises a lot of money.

And for the record, Jamie Foxx sings pretty much like that as it is. This was one of the reasons he got to play Ray Charles in the movie.

Haven't seen it.... I guess I just thought it was inappropriate :confused3 or... I don't know.... at least I knew the old singers

We didn't recognize over half the people there - and both consider ourselves music fans. :confused3

Not impressed!

I loved this rendition. I also enjoyed the original when it first came out.

The only thing I didn't like the auto-tune--but after the Superbowl commercial featuring that, I'm guessing the guy sings like that all the time.:confused3

I'm thinking I can get a song career going if auto-tune helps you to make it. I sing great with helium.:lmao:

I didn't like it. It didn't have the same vibe as the first one.

Imagine if all those that participated gave $1,000,000 instead of going on a self promoting ego trip.

Wow, you win the prize for biggest cynic on this thread. Lots of the people in the new version are very involved personally in charity for Haiti-this is just another way they are choosing to express it.

As far as having 'the same vibe', well, we thought this was a great vibe and it was obvious everyone was pretty passionate about the purpose and their singing. It wasn't like anyone held a gun to their heads and according to
Liionel Ritchie(he organized it) people were asked to participate and it was by invitation only.

I liked how it started in the first 30 seconds and then, for me, went down hill fast. I just didn't like it. I thought it was a mishmosh of singing, rapping, and yelling.

Still, I am hoping that it does what it is supposed to do and help the people of Haiti.

If Kim from Real Housewives of Atlanta can record a song, then anyone can. :happytv:

While I do have a soft spot for the original (I was 17, a huge MTV/music fan, very moved by it all...) I find the criticism of the new version overly harsh in many ways.
I still am a music fan as are my 2 "tweens"; I recognize most of the artists. In comparing the 2 videos, I don't see the "different vibe" or "lack of heart". While I understand that hip hop is not everyone's cup of tea--how can u honestly say the group of artists singing on that particular verse displayed anything other than heart? Same w/ Wyclef--not that I am a huge fan, but he was singing/(yelling) from his heart about the people of his country, who are hurting. And Celine--doesn't she always sing like that? How, really, was she doing anything different than her normal performance?
The original was a coming together of a variety of artists--MJ, Willie Nelson, Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Dionne Warwick--all very representative of the 1985 music industry. My understanding is that the new version is supposed to be a coming together of a variety of TODAY's artists-and I think it was: Young--Bieber, Fergie; Older-Celine, Tony Bennett. Not everyone that was invited to perform on the original ended up actually performing-same being true for the new recording; a lot depended on who could show up on the designated day.
The only way I think it could have been a more accurate reflection of today's music is if there were more of the major Country artists-Tim/Faith, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, etc.
There are so many "ugly" things that people do in the world today. I simply find it unnecessary to criticize so harshly the artists involved in this charitable event.

Thank you so much. You expressed how I felt much better than I was able to myself.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
