Our 9 year old son has flu like symptoms and has had the vaccination for both H1N1 and regular flu. So, hopefully, if it is the flu it will be a mild case and he will be over it before our trip! I hope and pray that our two teenage daughters don't get it, but if they do, I hope they get it now so they can be over it before next week!!! Geez, we have been looking forward to this trip for a YEAR - I hope he is better soon.....

Would your doctor prescribe Tamiflu ? might be past the point of being helpful but you never know.

Best wishes & pixie dust that all stay healthy pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:

IF your child has either flu, they should be well over it before your trip. Flu should not last more than 3-5 days.

We had a similar issue a few weeks ago, a week prior to a family trip to Boston. Our pediatrician just smiled and said, "Don't worry, she'll be over it by then." Sure enough, she was.

Incidentally, our pediatrician said the general wisdom was that a person was not contagious after they have been fever-free for 24 hours. She said she's a little more conservative than that, but that's the general guideline. We took DD to the Dr. on a Thursday, she was fever-free on Saturday evening, and she returned to school on Monday and went to Boston with us on Wednesday.

Have a great trip.

I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure he'll be fine before your trip. Here's some pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust: that your teenagers and you don't get sick.

Best of luck to you. The good news it that it should have time to make the rounds in the family and be done with by the time you leave.

Our youngest (18 mo) threw up 3 hours before our flight on our last trip. Usually, we would not feed him further, but we decided to give him all he wanted to eat to see if it was a fluke or if he was really sick. Fortunately, he did not do it again, and we had a fantastic trip.:cool1: I am sure yours will be as well.

One would need to add, without any pain/fever medication to the afebrile criteria for contagiousness. Also, often the true flu lasts a little longer than the usual 3-5 days for most URI's. The general range is 3-7 but often more in the 5-7 day range for feel bad and fever. Still, in the absence of complications, 9 days should be fine but then you have to worry about the rest of the family.

Hopefully things go well, we wish you the best. I'm assuming that neither vaccine was a live virus (intranasal).

A week after we returned from our trip to AKV I came down with the flu. I landed in the hospital on the second day of symptoms. I was so dehydrated and could not catch my breath and was having episodes of my joints becoming numb. I was in the emergency room, received IV and some other things and they sent me home with Tamiflu and it is two day later and I am starting to feel better. The Tamiflu works great, but I also needed the IV. DH and DS have some of the symptons but are not as bad. I do have a weakened immune system so that could be why it hit me so bad. Hope everyone is better and you have a great trip. If necessary get the Tamiflu, but I think you have to take it within 48 hours of symptons, but not sure about that.

Thank you - glad your son was okay and that you had a great trip! I hope you are right about it going through the family before our trip - or of course no one else getting it even better!

Actually it was the live virus for H1N1 that we all received. Although my son received it a week before the rest of the family. Our ped was only giving it to 2-10 year olds when he got it. Then our local health care center offered it to anyone 2-49 the next week and we all got it ( me, hubby and two daughters). Then two days later at school they offered the regular flu shot and only my son received it because they did not want to give it to my daughters less than a week after the H1N1. So, he is the only one protected from both and he is the only one sick. Today is his third day with a fever.

Sorry to hear that you were so sick, but glad you are better! Sounds scary though! I appreciated the advice about Tamiflu, I do think it is too late for it to help my son because this is his third day with a fever, but if any of the rest of us come down with it, I will try to get it for us - especially if it helps cut the illness short - only a week til our trip!!!!!

We have 16 days to go before our first visit to Wilderness Lodge and both DS and DD have fever (101.5), upset stomach, chills, headache and muscle aches today. Started yesterday:sad1:. I just hope they don't get worse or that Dh or myself get it before our trip.

Sorry to hear that your kids are sick. But since you have 16 days I think that they will both be better before then. Talked to my son's doctors office and they said drink plenty of fluids and take vitamin C!!! Hope you have a great time at Wilderness Lodge - we went there a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. We are going back one night during our trip to eat at the Whispering Canyon!!!!

Sounds like it might be a regular virus and not flu, if so, he hopefully will get better faster still though it may actually increase the risk of other family members becoming affected. I wish you luck. Fortunately things have started to settle down here locally but then again we started seeing H1N1 in June and had another major upswing shortly after school started. My reference to live vs injectable was the possibility that the symptoms were vaccine related but at this point that doesn't sound likely. All the rules and similarities but differences to the seasonal flu vaccine issues is interesting to me. For example with seasonal flu you need 2 doses IN ONE season if under 9 y/o and those 2 doses shouldn't be any closer than 4 weeks apart. With H1N1, those 2 doses can be squeezed down to 21 days but you still need 2 doses under 9. The risk groups are also similar but different reaching to 24 for H1N1 but only 18 for Seasonal flu with less of a focus on those of us 50 and older. Pregnancy can't get the seasonal first trimester, no restrictions for H1N1 other than can't get the intranasal. Plus you can't give the two intranasal together and are supposed to wait 1 month to give the second dose for those applicable. When you combine those issues with vaccines for children and availability issues, it really is quite a nightmare. I was talking to a few others at lunch and they stated they'd already given it to several inadvertently that should not have gotten the intranasal due either to age or medical condition.

Yes, it is complicated. We were told to wait one month for the second dose for my son for the H1N1, which would actually be while at WDW. We were told only one does for the regular flu. The two doses for that are only the first time that you ever get the regular flu vaccine. Maybe it was H1N1, flu, or like you said another virus. We will probably never know. I am just keeping my fingers crossed and the other fingers on the lysol can and hopefully the rest of stay healthy! Or atleast wait til we get back from WDW to get sick! We are also taking 71 year old MIL with us who has never been to WDW before. We have stayed away from her this week, so hopefully she doesn't get sick. She has had the seasonal flu vaccine, but not the H1N1. One week from today and we are on our way. Checking accuweather it loooks like the weather will be around 70 while we are there. Do you live in Florida?

Yes, it's only two doses in ONE SEASON once for the regular flu vaccine and once you've had several doses, even that doesn't always apply. I hope all stay well and you have a great trip.

We are in North FL (some would say south GA) and it's been up to the low 80's today. We'll be back at WDW at OKW for Thanksgiving.

Thank you for the good wishes! I looked at the weather and it seems that the beginning of our trip is low 80's and then after the first two days - down to 70's. Should be good for the parks, not so great for swimming, but that is ok with me. We are in upstate New York but we are having a warm spell right now - today it is almost 70!
