We are going to Disneyland!!!

My husband just announced that as a Christmas present we are going to Disneyland in January. We are going Martin Luther King weekend.

This will be our first trip there. We have been to the LA area before but never to DL.

I know that some things will be closed during that time.

Any hints and tips?

We will be arriving on Jan 15 late and leaving on Jan 20 in the afternoon.

Right now we have a reservation at the Hyatt Orange County in a kids suite room for $114 +tax. Is this a good rate?

Is 3 days enough for DL. I am thinking of taking a day and going to the Newport Beach/ Laguna area as my DH has never been there.

Congratulations on your trip!

I think three days should be enough for you to see both parks sufficiently. The best advice I can give you is to consider looking into the Southern California Annual Pass. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure anyone can get one, it's just marketed to the people here in SoCal. It costs around $100 (which I think would be your least expensive ticketing option for three days) and allows you to park hop whenever you wish. Its main drawback is that there are a number of blockout dates when you can't use it. However, I think the only blocked day for the period you're there is Saturday. Since that will be the most crowded day anyways, that would be a great day to see Newport and Laguna (which I highly recommend). This pass also gives you the flexibility to see the parks on Jan. 15 if you arrive early enough or on Jan. 20 if you have time.

I checked on the southern Cal pass and it's only available for people in the So Cal area.

I have a friend you lives in San Francisco and was able to get the so cal annual pass. He is originally from L.A., so he may be doing some funny business to get it; I don't know. However, if you take a look at this thread, it appears other out of state people have had success with it as well. If you want the peace of mind getting your tickets beforehand, that's fine, but if you're waiting to get your pass after you arrive, it probably wouldn't hurt to still try.

I can personally confirm what El_Tigre says because I was with my sister when she purchased the SoCal pass in June. It was $99.00 she later upgraded but we are from the SF Bay Area and she was able to get it.

Actually, Monday the 20th could be just about as crowded as Saturday. With all of the annual passes these days, that day is jammed with locals who are off from school.

I just read your posts and we are going to be in the area the exact same days you are! We're only doing a one-day trip to DL though, as the main purpose of our trip is to visit my best friend who lives in L.A. We'll be at DL on Friday the 17th. I'm hoping it won't be too crowded because of the MLK weekend, but we'll take our chances I guess. It will be my boyfriend's first time there and I haven't been since '89, so we're really looking forward to it (especially since we just came back from WDW in Oct). Maybe we'll pass you by in the park and not even know it!!
