We are all Americans BUT

Although I have visited NJ many times, its always to the beach where its filled with people vacationing from other states. I picture all New Jersians having big Bon Jovi hair and driving black trans ams.

What a strange idea for a thread: let's bash people whom we have never met in places we have never been.

While I sort of agree, as long as everyone knows that these are just sterotypes, and not facts, I think sharing, and correcting misconceptions is a good thing.

I've run into many, many misconceptions about people from my home state of Alabama. I keep hoping that most of these will die out as the population becomes more educated about bias in general. I once introduced myself to a man from the state of Washington. He asked where I was from, and I replied, "Alabama." His reaction was to crinkle up his nose and proclaim that he had never known of anything good that had come from Alabama. Yes, I was offended, but I also felt sorry for him. Who would say something like that?

In the early 1980's my father used to travel from Birmingham to New jersey for work regularly. He came home on quite a few occasions shaking his head at some of the things he heard. He had people ask if Alabamians wore shoes, if we had indoor plumbing, and if we were all racists. ignorance is truly an ugly thing.

oregon, washington and nevada-largly populated by former california natives.

nevada-lots of california retirees who sought lower home prices, cheaper alcohol and tobacco, and casinos where alcohol is served free of charge on the gaming floors:rotfl:

oregon-more california retirees who sought lower home prices (before they pushed them through the roof but still lower than peak california prices), and more bang for their pension buck by virtue of no state sales tax.

washington-the rest of the california retirees-who sought the lower home prices, a much increased bang to their pension buck by virtue of no state income tax-AND close proximity to oregon, to take advantage of their non existant sales tax:rotfl::rotfl:

Here in The Villages we have friends and neighbors from all over the country, in fact, all over the world. It's interesting how people concieve/misconcieve other states and the people from them. When we get together we learn about each other, even though it may be with some good-natured teasing.

Idaho is a haven for skin heads and bigots.

Montana is full of cowboys.

Everyone in California is in therapy.

I grew up in Iowa, there really isn't as much corn as you think. It is alternated with soy beans yearly for the soil. Also most of what you see isn't sweet corn, it's field corn. For feed, HFCS, ethynol, etc.

People can make fun of Iowa as much as they want. I drove thru Eastern NM on the way to El Paso and there is NOTHING there! We almost ran out of diapers, at least in Iowa you can drive 20-30 miles in any direction and find a town with a Wal-Mart!!

Idaho = potatoes everywhere
Texas = everyone has a gun and is a member of the NRA
Florida = where all the senior citizens go for the winter from Jersey
Louisiana = After watching Billy the Exterminator....I fear for my life.
New Hampshire = nothing to do there but drink, reproduce, and drive tractors (sorry lol)
New Yorkers can't drive :) lol
Pennsylvania - Amish paradise
Cali- Surfer dudes and dudettes, knarley!

and...I'm from Jersey so let me clarify
I do not have Bon Jovi hair, right now its pulled up in a pony tail. I don't even really like Bon Jovi, I have friends who have met him and from what I hear he's a nasty person, but Bruce Springsteen :cloud9:
I do not drive a black trans am, I drive an 07 tan ford fusion.
I do not say "Joysee"
My dad HAS been mistaken for Tony Soprano
No, I do not fist pump, lay in a tanning bed all day, or throw on 5lbs of bronzer.
Its true, I have no idea how to pump my own gas and don't care to learn.
Its also true that I may never own a house here b/c I will never be able to afford it.
Um, and although pork roll seems to be a staple item here, I hate it.

...and...thats that ;)

A person of few words eh? Well, I'd insult where you're from too except I don't know where that is! Oh well. :)

No worries, my home town has been insulted several times already...nothing to cry about.

I know it can't possibly be true, but getting good office help must be hard in the south, because I swear that every time I've dealt with a clueless administrative assistant, they're calling me from a southern state!

New Yorkers aren't rude, they just come off that way because they talk fast and you can't get a word in edgewise. I like NYers, I just hate talking to them! ;)

Visiting CA, CA'ers are....different. Not in bad way, but there is something about the whole state that just seems a bit...off. Hard to describe. Nice place to visit, wouldn't ever want to live there.

Curious to know what people think of Illinoisans. :)

I'm glad I don't live in a southern state, because I guess that would make me clueless.:rotfl:

Most of my opinions wouldn't be very popular, so I'll keep them to myself. :rotfl:

Betty, ever hear the term FIB? That's what some people here call people from IL.

But I don't ~ usually. My impression of people from IL is they are all terrible drivers.

FIB? Yep, usually from cheese-heads though. And I use cheese-head with fondness, I have relatives in WI. :flower3:

And I happen to think that Illinoisans are the only ones that know how to drive, it's the rest of the country that is clueless! :drive:

Ohio is alot like home, just flat

Ha! Where I live in Ohio it's nothing but HILLS everywhere, no flat land for hundreds of miles! It also makes me chuckle that everyone thinks all the Amish are in PA, when Ohio has the largest population in the world - they just aren't as "commercialized" about it here.

Um, and although pork roll seems to be a staple item here, I hate it.
Our next door neighbor is from NJ and whenever we'd travel to the shore we'd have to bring him back some of that nasty stuff.

:rotfl:Cheesehead is a term of endearment here. LOL

You all do realize that NY is a whole state and not just a big city, right  We upstaters (and I do mean the entire North thats above Westchester :)) are nothing like the city dwellers, we can drive, we are not in a hurry all the time, the majority of us aren't rude, we're not fast talkers, basically, we are not anything that everyone associates with those from the city ;)

Lilo5, I hope you didn't take offense to what I said, I've read all the Stephanie Plum books and its clouded my judgement  and I happen to be a big Bon Jovi fan, especially in his big hair days :lovestruc
Truth is, I feel sorry for residents of NJ, shows like The Jersey Shore do nothing to help with the stereotypes that people may think about you.

Love this one!!!

LoL, I do love that show though! So interesting to me how each region of this country has things that other regions dont!

When we were in FL we saw an armadillo, we don't have those here and thanks to Billy I now know they are pretty harmless but they do carry diseases like dysentery, salmenolla, and bacteria that could cause leprosy.
Thanks Billy for the heads up :thumbsup2

No, not at all its all in good fun, but I had to let people know not all of the people in Jersey are like those found on Jersey Shore, Jerseylicous, Real Housewives of NJ, Jersey Couture, etc....they do make us all look bad :rotfl:
