We'’re out of it! … A summer 14 “MAGICal” Med adventure Day 14/Aug 05 updated 05/05

Nice gifts. Very odd about the ship just being overhauled and the door handle not working right and that doesn't sound good about the smell in the bathroom.

Your coffees look yummy. I don't mind them out of a paper cup, but they are definitely better in real china.

In Italy, especially Rome you should be very aware of pickpockets. Many big cities are like that.
never had an issue but other issues in Rome occurred.

LOL. He spoke German. That is funny.

Gorgeous pics as you were waiting.

That place is beautiful. The snacks looked good too.

The tram is cute. What a view.

Some of those rides would scare me.

The church is gorgeous and that view.

Too bad it rained on your last day there.

The tapas looked good.

Yeah! You're on the ship.

Congrats on the Premium Economy seats. From this past trip I will only fly to Europe now with Premium Economy or higher. Very squished. LOL.

Seems like you are liking the ship so far but cannot really tell. Weird the server tried to talk you out of the cup.

All caught up again.

Great news about your Summer flights. I will have to try that frozen coffee sounds good with ice cream. Wondering if you tried the Aquadunk.

We are so happy that it worked out like this. Nothing worse than being squeezed into a seat for 10 hours. :lmao:
I am trying to get one like that in March. Unfortunately consistancy (or even sticking to what is printed in the menu) was not their strong side on this cruise. :rolleyes1
We actually never tried the Aquadunk. Didn't draw us as much as the Aquaduck. :lmao:

Not exactly the ideal room situation to start that Disney magic flowing for you, especially after the "bare bones" waiting area, and being welcomed by that beautiful chandelier. :(

No, not quite what got me into that Disney high. But that first day it wasn't all that "bad" to us. Only when more things were thrown our way, it just got a bit too much.

The tour of the ship and your drinks looked really wonderful! I'm guessing a "bad" day on a Disney cruise is better than a great day at work though......... :rolleyes1 :)

Couldn't agree more - any day at Disney is MUCH better than a day at work! :thumbsup2

I'm guessing such loyal Disney Cruisers will have their issues handled quickly.......at least I hope so! :scratchin

Well, most of them stayed with us until the end of the cruise. I gave up pointing things out to our stateroom host and hearing from other guests with similar issues I didn't even try to involve guest services. :rolleyes1

A friend who has cruised a lot told me that this was one of the things that Disney did differently when they started cruising out of PC: having a really nice cruise terminal. Until then it was industry standard to start your expensive cruise out of a former port warehouse. Unfortunately Barcelona still seems to do things old school... ;)

I had seen check in for other lines before, but expected DCL to do a bit more than just put up garden chairs. :lmao:
Looking back at it now, we should not have let it get to us, but we just could not getting into that DCL high. :sad2:

As far as I know the old chandelier is somewhere in storage. However, it was never glass (at least according to the CM who did our Art of the Theme Tour on the Disney Wonder). It was originally designed in glass, but then copied in plastic and the plastic versions are what was installed on the Magic and the Wonder. I am very happy that the Wonder still has hers, but am afraid that it will go in the coming refurb. I am also no fan of the taking one staircase out. I think it makes the atrium look unfinished. The Dream and Fantasy atriums were designed with one staircase, that's why it fits there. But this is only the impression I get from the pictures!

That is funny, as we were told they were a mixture of glass and acrylic. Well, no matter what they are made of, I prefer the "old" version to the new one. And now that you mention it .... whenever we crossed that Atrium it made me think that something was not right - now that you mention the missing staircase I know what's missing. :rotfl2:

I had to laugh about your troubles to get the coffee served in a cup! I have had the same issues! However, on the PC cruise there seemed to be a lot of people asking for a real cup, I heard some doing that, so I felt less exotic! :rotfl:

Ah, coffee in a china cup! One of the things I really care about. :lmao: I really do understand that if I want my coffee to go I will get it in a paper cup, but we were sitting there, going no where and had to insist on china/glass. Some things I will never quite "get". (Says the lady who brings her own tea! :rotfl2:)

And thanks for your PM - my week has been totally busy, I will reply soon!

No rush, Magdalene, thanks for helping out in the first place!

Nice gifts. Very odd about the ship just being overhauled and the door handle not working right and that doesn't sound good about the smell in the bathroom.

We loved our new Castaway Club gifts. They included a cute little photo album as well and since we are Platinum members we also got a bottle of Prosecco and a free meal at Palo. :thumbsup2
Kathy, that was our main issue that not all areas were really overhauled. The restaurants were new and beautiful, as were the adult areas and hallways. But there was some visible wear and tear in the rooms and the bathroom was something else. The smell was just one of the issues (which we resolved ourselves in the end).

Your coffees look yummy. I don't mind them out of a paper cup, but they are definitely better in real china.

We are so used to coffee in China. Austria has a very long history with coffee and "coffee houses, coffee culture". I don't drink much coffee and the little that I enjoy I want in the proper "container". :rotfl2: But that server was determined that quantity was more important than quality. :lmao:

Yes, Barcelona was beautiful and we saw a lot of great sights.

We are so happy with the Premium Economy seats, especially for the price we now paid for them. :thumbsup2

I did like the ship - how can you NOT like a ship that has a Mickey shape on the funnel. ;) But organization/logistics were not what we were used to. So the experience was not what we had hoped it to be. ;)

The room does not sound up to par to what You and Tom have sailed in before. The smell...that would have bothered me, and it sounds like it got worse  Coffee looks yummy, but sorry you had a small difficulty with the waitstaff getting it in a glass :confused3 so much for going green, right? ;)

How did I miss the start of this report? I just spotted the link in your other report and headed on over here. Now, I'm going back to the beginning to catch up!

Ok, I am now all caught up.

It's amazing how much you were able to do in Barcelona considering you only had a couple of days to do it in. And all the food pics are wonderful. The food from that tapas bar you finally found looks absolutely delicious.

And you are right....that new chandelier on the Magic is yucky! Especially when you compare it to the gorgeous one on the Fantasy.

I wondered...how did you feel about having a verandah on the side of the ship where the slide loops out over the edge? I'm not sure I would be thrilled with that...did it bother you at all?

Okay, before I post another update I need to let you know that in exactly 6 months from today we will be travelling again! :cloud9:

Yes, in 6 months from today we will celebrate Tom's 50th by flying to the US and taking another cruise.

Guess, I better start planning this trip soon, so we can share the details with you all. :dance3:

Cannot wait to hear all the plans! What a great way to celebrate his 50th!:cool1:

(What are your dates for next August? I am trying to plan a few days at Disney but fear it will be later than you dates...I hate to miss you yet again after all these years! )

OMG

I will do replies later, but just had to share.

For the last few months I have been stalking Lufthansa's page for the release of Premium Economy. But it looked like it was not going to happen before our summer trip, so 10 days ago I bought regular economy airfare for our summer trip. It was just SO expensive, but usually Lufthansa prices do not go down and it had gone up already, so I bit the bullet and booked the two of us.

Guess what, today I got an email letting us know that they now offer Premium Economy for our trip. I was floored - it was the exact same price as I had paid but since I had booked the lowest category (which cost an arm and a leg in the first place) I was not sure if we were allowed to upgrade or how much they would charge for it.
So, as soon as I got home I got on the phone and called their service line. The girl on the phone was really helpful, but it still took half an hour to figure everything out and now we are flying

PREMIUM ECONOMY

which will not only give us 50% more legroom, only two seats instead of three next to each other, a special menu served on china plates, a welcome drink :thumbsup2, plus ........... 2 free bags each.
And the other good thing ........ not only will it be not more expensive than what we had already booked for, but they are even refunding what I had paid for the emergency exit seats, so it is actually cheaper flying Premium Economy instead of regular economy.
To say that I am VERY excited is an understatement. :rotfl2:

This is AWESOME news! I bet you were beyond thrilled when this all happened. Yay!

Ick, a smell?! Uh no. That's never good.

Wonder why it was so difficult to get your drinks in china than in throw away cups. You'd think CM would want to encourage guests to do this to not be so wasteful. But glad your drinks were tasty!

We knew that this was the oldest vessel in the Disney fleet, but we had thought that drydock meant they would "tackle" all the issues. Well, they did some awesome work to public areas, but I guess they did not get to all the issues.
Ah, the coffee in a china cup issue. :rotfl2: That is something we battle every time. Sometimes they have an awesome barrista on board and you will get a masterpiece in your cup, but sometimes there are just the regular CMs who just want to sell. ;)

How did I miss the start of this report? I just spotted the link in your other report and headed on over here. Now, I'm going back to the beginning to catch up!

Ah, :welcome:
You have not missed much so far. I have not gotten very far since the start of it, but I hope that now that things have calmed down a bit, I will be able to update more. :thumbsup2

We were pretty lucky to get to see so much of this beautiful city in the short time we actually had. Given that it was pretty hot too, we did quite well.
The food in the last tapas bar was AMAZING! It was out of this world good. :thumbsup2

And you are right....that new chandelier on the Magic is yucky! Especially when you compare it to the gorgeous one on the Fantasy.

It just doesn't fit in there. :sad2:

It didn't bother us at all. People slide by so fast, they were kind of a blurr. :rotfl2:

Cannot wait to hear all the plans! What a great way to celebrate his 50th!:cool1:

I thought it was just right, as we took our first Disney cruise for my 50th. ;) But he is SO lucky as he will celebrate his actual birthday on board. :thumbsup2

(What are your dates for next August? I am trying to plan a few days at Disney but fear it will be later than you dates...I hate to miss you yet again after all these years! )

Ah, since I already booked our plane tickets we are pretty much set. What's sure for now is that we will arrive on August 15 and "so far" I am planning on staying at either Pop or AoA for two nights, then move to "the dark side" for three nights before returning to WDW (depending on what I can get from DVC). On August 22 we will get on board the Fantasy for a back to back cruise, a Western and Eastern Caribbean. We should then return to WDW on September 5th for one more week. :goodvibes

This is AWESOME news! I bet you were beyond thrilled when this all happened. Yay!

I WAS beyond thrilled and kept checking the reservation if it was still there and I had not just imagined it all. :rotfl2:

Ick, a smell?! Uh no. That's never good.

Yes, one that despite they ran the air conditioning in there all day, never really left, until ........... we came up with a solution. :lmao:

Wonder why it was so difficult to get your drinks in china than in throw away cups. You'd think CM would want to encourage guests to do this to not be so wasteful. But glad your drinks were tasty!

That's what we wondered too. I do understand that they do not want you to walk out of the Cove Cafe with it, but we were not going anywhere. :confused3

Before I post another update, let me just tell you that I had a very experience with Lufthansa.

Remember when I told you that we were getting a refund on the seats I had prepaid. Well, when I upgraded to Premium Economy I had to pay a "change fee", which I could see in my online account the very next day. The refund not so much. So yesterday I called Lufthansa to ask about it and a very nice lady told me that due to the many strikes they had had, they were heavily behind on refunds and it might take another two weeks until I would see them in my account. Now, while she was checking into things she asked if I had had to pay a change fee. And then she went on to tell me that there was NO change fee until May 2015, so they are refunding the 240 Euros change fee as well.

Hey Mickey, there's more money for you! :rotfl2:

Congrats!

Day 4, July 26

Where’s the magic? - Part 3

We took our sweet time to finish our drinks before heading back to our stateroom before it was time for the lifeboat drill.
We had just a little time left and sat outside on the veranda for a few more minutes before we headed to our station. There were cast members directing us to behind the scenes stairs which we climbed down and soon we were in line to be accounted for. The cast member did their best to entertain while we waited for the drill to end, but the family on our left kept talking very loudly which was highly distractive. But finally the drill ended and it was high time to head to the DVC meet. We had not been too happy to hear that the meet started about half an hour before the ship was to leave the harbour, but since this was the way it was we just decided that we would leave once the ship was moving. They were already letting people into the D-Lounge when we arrived and we quickly found a table to the left of the stage. We settled in and got some drinks

and were waiting for the presentation to start, when someone came over to our table and asked if I was Karin. I could not believe it, but it was Bobbie, a new found cruise friend, who we had been talking too via FB and email. And once we had hugged each other we asked her to sit with us, so she quickly went over to the other side of the room to get her daughter, Connie, to sit with us as well.
We had a lot of fun catching up on the days leading up to the cruise and did not really pay much attention to the presentation and suddenly Tom noticed that the ship had started to move, so we picked up our stuff and headed to the door where we were handed some mash backpacks. And while we received those we could see that quite a lot of the other guests were leaving as well. Bad choice of time for a meet.
We walked up to the top deck and the front of the ship and stood at the rail watching the ship slowly gliding out of the harbour.

And once we had made it out of the harbour Bobbie and Connie got themselves something to eat as they had missed lunch. Shortly after they had finished their very late lunch we said our goodbyes and headed back to our stateroom for a little rest.

We sat out on the veranda watching the waves and soon it was time to head to the Welcome Show. Unfortunately there was something else that really started to annoy me lateron.
Not only did Brent, the cruise director give his daily speech, but he had a Spanish sidekick, who really loved to hear his voice as he kept on talking for quite some time. We both didn’t mind that much the first day, but lateron in the cruise, Armando became a mayor pain and so was Brent, who I just could not come to like very much. He always sounded somewhat “fake” to me. Well, to cut this long story short, about 20 minutes into the show we left as we both just did not like what we were seeing.

Instead we headed for the shops. I had wanted to pick up one of the very new Dooney and Bourke handbags and Tom wanted a Helmsman Mickey statue and a model of the Magic. We had a look at the Med Merchandise they were offering and were surprised that they already had T-shirts with Greece on it on display. I had thought that they would sell those once they got there, but who knew. So while browsing we debated if Tom would pick up his little statue right away or not and I thought it might be a good idea to get shopping for things we definitely wanted out of the way. When the cast member at the till found out what we were talking about he mentioned that it was a great idea to buy the statue right away, as they had just restocked them. They had been out of them for the last two cruises.
Wow!
You should just think they would have had enough supplies shipped. Once we had asked for all of Tom’s things, we asked about the new Dooney and Bourke and the answer was a simple, “we’re out of it”, which seemed to become the motto of the cruise, and definitely became the motto of my trip report.
Purchases in hand we headed back to our stateroom to change for dinner. We had some time left as dinner was really late, at 8.45, so we relaxed in our stateroom and while getting ready for dinner I noticed that “smell” in the bathroom again. I first thought I might just be imagining something, but then asked Tom about it and he had noticed it as well and it started bothering both of us a bit, especially, since the bathroom door had to be pulled shut, otherwise it would not stay closed.
But again, it was now time to head out, so we had to let it go for the moment. The elevators had lines going down, so we walked down the four flights of stairs to Lumiere’s. We checked in and were led to our table, which was right along the main walkway into the restaurant, but it was just a table for two. And as soon as we had sat down, our servers, Jason and Jay were at our table to introduce themselves. They were both really nice and enthusiastic, we just had a bit of trouble understanding Jay.
And with that our order for soft drinks were taken and we were left to study the menu, which was “Let The Magic Begin”. We both had the feeling that our cruise vacation had finally started and we got into the right mindset and mood. So we both decided on having a drink with our dinner. The

Keylime Margarita peeked our interest and was quickly ordered and so was our dinner. It did not take long and the drinks and bread service for the night,

Freshly baked carrot and scallion loaf with a

Cumin and cilantro dip, were brought out, quickly followed by the appetizers. Tom had decided on the

Fried Spiced Calamari, served with Lemon-Garlic Mayonnaise, while I had ordered the

Smoked Salmon Carpaccio, with Capers, finely chopped Shallots, pink Peppercorns and Honey Mustard Dressing. Once we had finished our starters, Jason brought out Tom’s soup, the

Clam Chowder, served with sourdough croutons. Next course were the

Grilled Grain Fed New York Strip, served with Cheddar Cheese and Onion Smashed Baked Potato, Roasted Green Asparagus and Red Wine Jus, which he liked quite a bit. My choice for the night was the

Pork Tenderloin Wellington, roasted Pork Tenderloin wrapped in Mushroom Duxelles, Crepe and Puff Pastry, served with Gratin Potatoes, Roasted Baby Vegetables and a Rich Bordeau Wine Sauce. It was every bit as yummy as it had sounded on the menu and we were both pretty happy. Again, once we had finished this course, our servers were quick at hand to remove the plates and hand us the dessert menu. We had a good look and then Tom decided on trying the

Passion Fruit and Dark Chocolate Dome, layered with Raspberry Jelly and a White Chocolate Spiral Décor. I had my heart set on the

No Sugar Added Chocolate Truffle Cake, Chocolate Biscuit layered with Chocolate Cream and Raspberry Sauce. They both looked delicious and tasted very good as well. While we were still enjoying our desserts the head server, George, paid us a visit and we chatted for a while.
At the end of the conversation he broke a bit of news to us and let us know that he was happy to announce that on port days there would be no table service breakfast option, but Cabanas was open early and on sea days they would offer brunch instead of breakfast on some days at Lumiere’s.
Um, yeah, not really happy news to us, as we both don’t really care for buffets as your food is usually luke warm at best, once you finally sit down to eat. Plus it really messed with our plans, as I had planned and made reservations for our tours only to begin after we had had a nice sit down breakfast.
Plans out the window and my happy vacation mood had gotten quite the damper. After George had left and we had finished our desserts, we said goodbye to our servers and headed back to our stateroom where we were greeted by a fun towel animal

and a bit of a smell in the room as the door had not been quite closed. Now, with the prospect of no leisurely table service breakfast and the faint smell in the room we were not off to a good start.
We spent a bit more time out on the veranda, then, around midnight we were finally tired enough to head to bed.

To be continued ..........

Ugh! No wonder you weren't enamored of the Magic. Your meet really was at a bad time.

I understand about Brent/Armando...I felt the same way about Natalie/Miguel on my Magic cruise.

Bummer on the lack of sit down breakfast! I dislike the buffet as well...I would really be upset too!

Ugh, I hope you get the smell situation resolved!

:woohoo: It just so happens that the dates I have been considering are Sept 6-10 or 7-11! :woohoo:

Mickey sure is looking out for you!! ;) :yay:

What terrible timing on the Meet time. Obviously someone wasn't thinking ahead!

Yay for a meet with a new friend.

Agh...the smell still there.

All if your food looks quite yummy.

Not good news on the breakfast limitations.

Agh...the smell.

I'm sorry things aren't off on the right foot.

That Frozen Cappucino sounds really good. I think I want one of those, I hope they have them on the Wonder!

That's not cool that they don't have a sit down breakfast on Port days. I'm debating whether or not to go to the buffet or sit down restaurant on our excursion days.

Your dinner looked great! But I'm so sorry about the smell in the bathroom. That could not have been pleasant.
