WDWWDS - Quench your thirst

Wow, M, that is just too sad. And here your cousin thought he was doing the right and responsible thing. I'm so sorry.

It scares me to death that I will be dealing with this topic in a few years with my own kids. The 12 year old is already saving her babysitting money for a car. YIKES!

What can we all say besides the fact that life really sucks at times. It’s funny how we see things so different today than we did yesterday. When I turned 16 I was so gung-ho to get my license, I couldn’t believe that I had to wait until I turned 16. Now at 35 I can’t believe that we are handing keys over to 16 years old. Some would say that we were more responsible back then, that laws were stricter and that there were fewer cars on the road. Although all the above may be true, when I look back today I would have to question handling the keys over to a 16 year old me.

I recall when I was 18 or 19 I had had a glass or two of wine during dinner. Being Italian I grew up with home made wine readily available, I guess that is why I never abused it or do not really drink to this day. Now anyone who knows me knows that I am not much of a drinker. Anyways, right after dinner I left to go pick up my buddies for our ritual Friday night of havoc. Driving to Tom’s house felt weird, I felt loose, I felt like the car was acting up because of the jerkiness in it. It hit me as I approached Tom’s place. Man, I was feeling the wine. I recall getting out of the car and throwing the keys at Tom telling him that I was not driving because I was ‘feeling good’. What happened, Tom drove my car home and another friend followed us, he drove. I guess my point is that at 18 I knew better and so did my friends. Now I know that alcohol did not play a factor in Heatley’s accident but he should have known better than do drive like an idiot. Madonna, I am sorry about your cousin.

Maybe because I'm an adult now, but to me it just seems like the kids today are as mature as we were at that age. Yes I did get my license at 16, but I feel like I was more mature than my daughter is now. At 17 I started college and had to drive myself to school and work. The car was a necessity for me. I didn't view it as a toy or something to go pick up my friends in.

I don't know, maybe I'm getting old. :(

I'm sorry too madonna. I lost one of my very best friends to alcohol too, such a senseless way to die. I went into labor at his funeral, had my daughter that evening, so he still has a strong connection to me.

As far as being more mature, I don't know about that, all teenagers think they're responsible. But we, as adults, worry more because we've seen more. My daughter will be 13 at the end of the month, and she too is supposedly saving her money for a car, but at the rate she's saving, she'll be at least 43 before she'll be able to buy one. :p

Wow, have you guys brought up a subject that really hits home. First off, madonna, I am very sorry about your cousin. He did the right thing and it was unfortunate that that his friend didn't recognize his limitations.

As a parent of two drivers and one soon to be, this is something I deal with constantly. When my son and I went to ballgames and tailgated, I'd share a beer with him, because I was always of the mind that if you taught your kids to do things responsibly, instead of denying what you know they're going to do anyway, they'd be better for it. I know he drinks in college. We've talked about it and he's honest with me. But, there is always that little thought in the back of my mind of whether or not he really knows what his limits are. Just last weekend, he came home for the holidays and went out Saturday night with some friends. He came home the next morning because he slept it off on a friends couch. While I'm glad he did that, he doesn't understand why his not calling us to just let us know that he won't be home causes us undo anxiety. Kids think it's a matter of control, when it's not. It's really a matter of concern and peace of mind.

Now my youngest is half a year away from her permit and she's already counting down the days. I'd like to say I trust my kids. I do. But how much are we willing to let go when just one mistake can prove so costly? I'm not that old that I don't remeber when I was 16. I thought I knew better too and in most cases, I did. I learned my lesson thankfully before I could do anything really stupid, but in retrospect that lesson could have been a costly one, instead of being something to look back upon and laugh at.

Bottom line is there is a fine balance between being a good parent and letting your children grow into independent young adults and being responsible enough to make sure they do the right things. I'm not sure there are any correct answers. You just have to pray that you've done your job well.

That is why to this day I do not abuse alcohol, my father had the same philosophy.

Sandy if you could see me right now you'd see that I am standing up and applauding you. Well said my friend.

So very true Sandy.

You know...I couldn't have said it any better Sandy..I think of the risks I took as a kid...and I realize I am lucky that I never ran into any problems....

Having no kids...I don't have the same anxiety as parents do...but I do have yound neices and nephews...so I can sympathize

M...I am sorry about your cousin...I don't know what else to say....

madonna... Sorry to hear about your cousin. :(

Sandy.... I worry about my 14 soon to be 15 year old DD driving and making the right choices. You said it all when you said "You just have to pray that you've done your job well."

Well guys I made my first ever Survivor picks, now we just have to wait and see how things go tonight :teeth:

I vote for the Red Sox pitching staff to get the %$#& off the island!!

Yes I'm bitter...I'm a Red Sox fan...it's my right!

You know - I figured out why the moron tribe sucks so bad...

Andrew - their *leader* speaks of them in the 3rd person...what is up with that??? He NEVER says 'us', 'we', 'our tribe', etc. He always says "The Morgan tribe..."

Everyone seems to think he's so great, the more I see this dude, the more I think he's the problem. I get the impression that he thinks he perfect, especially when he says "the problem with the Morgan tribe", its like HE'S not the problem - THEY are, he disassociates himself from them.

Speaking in the 3rd person is a sign of thinking your 'superior'...I don't know, considering at this point - it NEEDS to be a team effort, his attitude just bugs me...

psst...go Yanks go!!!

Can I chime in here and agree, I CAN'T STAND Andrew. And every time I see him in that stupid suit jacket I want to scream!!!!! If you are going to be a leader then Dear Lord actually be the leader. And then you VOTE OFF the one that was ACTUALLY doing work??!!??!! They deserve to lose all the rest of the challenges. Moron is definitely the right word.

Okay does Christa make anyone else feel DUH everytime she opens her mouth? Can you even understand what she is saying??!!??!!

Go Marlins! roflmbo

Well the ****** didn't say "The Morgan tribe.." nearly enough to allow OT to catch up to the leaders in the WDWWDS tribe. That's ok, I've got my sights set on Lizzie, who's beating the OT by a point.....for now.

Congrats to Jas and MK who are at the top of their respective tribes.

Is Hagrid da man or what?? No one has deserved to win this much since Colby. But watch, he'll carry them into the merge on top and then they'll turn on him

OT also agrees with Madonna...Andrew is a big part of the problem. He's too busy acting like a leader instead of being one. Why exactly aren't the Morons trying to improve their sleeping arrangements? They have no plans, no assignments and it was dumb to boot the Boy Scout.

I'm the tribe leader :hyper: and I've yet to watch anything but the last 15 minutes of the show.
So who has good weekend plans? I don't, so I want to hear every one else's. Oh, Travel Channel has that Disney show on tonight, right? I may call Sam's to see if they have the Lion King DVD in early, sometimes they do.

He must be taking his cues from the Jason Giambi School of Taking responsibility :yo-yo:

Higgs, so sorry about the Red Sox. I was so hoping we'd get a chance to beat them in the next round as a 25th anniversary celebration of sorts :duck:

Is anyone else having the Friday I am?

When I got to work this morning and was making coffee, the coffee pot exploded sending glass and water EVERYWHERE. It looked like a monsoon hit the kitchen, as well as me. Why did the pot explode? Who knows. It wasn't hot. There must have been a weakness, like a crack in the glass. A police officer was up here and came running to make sure I was ok. At least he didn't think there was someone hurting me, so he didn't have his weapon drawn. lol

Then as I was rearranging stuff on my desk later I knocked over my glass of water. Again, water everywhere. At least it didn't go on any electronics or any important paperwork.

I guess maybe I should just stay away from containers with water in them today.
