Leaving the Sunday morning after Hurricane Charley, I was a little worried (my wife was really worried!!) about things going smoothly from a logistics standpoint.
Our plane from DFW was on time and arrived in MCO about 10 a.m. I was shocked to see the airport (and trees) damaged pretty severely. Not a good sign!
Mears was pretty backed up and it took us about 2 hours to get from MCO to our resort, POR. Once on Disney property I felt much better. There were some trees down here and there, but it quickly became apparent that Charley would have a minimal impact on our vacation.
We got to the room about 1 p.m and unloaded our bags and headed to Magic Kingdom. Hooray for the Disney clean up crew! I didn't notice a single sign of damage throughout the park, although I wasn't looking closely for any. I had this same experience for all the parks throughout the week. It was really hard to see any damage unless you went looking for it.
Some highlights of our stay;
1. The Disney transportation was wonderful. We always seemed to get a bus in less than 5 minutes. Only once did we have to wait 20 minutes.
2. Bob Jackson. The entertainer at River Roost was great. POR does a good job of making nighttime friendly for all ages.
3. As far as food; we enjoyed the Sweet Potato Cakes at Boatwright's in POR. YUM YUM. Also, O'hana's food seemed to be a lot better this year than our experience last year. The meats were a lot more tender and juicy. Worth the price! And we got to watch fireworks in Magic Kingdom...which brings me to my next rave
4. Wishes!!!! This is the best fireworks show ever at Disney (IMO). Don't miss this and if you've seen it then see it again. I don't even want to know how much all those fireworks cost.
5. Last but not least was Mickey's Philharmagic. The best 3D style show in all of Disney (IMO). Great for people of all ages.
6. The Appliance Direct infomercial. Call me crazy (my wife does) but I could watch that all day.
A few negatives....
1. They put us in a smoking room in Alligator Bayou. Since we didn't smell any smoke at first in our room we thought we might tough it out. After the third night we decided that the smoke and the run down room was too much for us. Run down meaning - stained carpet, strange smells, and pancake like pillows. After a quick trip to registration we were put in the Mansions!! Kudos to the CM that was friendly and prompt. The new room was completely redone and smelled great! Oh, and the beds and pillows were about 1000 times more comfortable.
2. Planet Hollywood. There are many other places to spend $12 on an average chicked sandwich. (ESPN gives you a lot more bang for your buck)
Overall, we had an amazing time.
One side note....I really liked POR but I had the chance to check out CSR and loved the cleanliness of that resort. Pepper Market was great too! Different strokes for different folks, but I think next year CSR will be my choice of stay.
