I have heard that the next big project for MK, and I am assuming that means after Monster's Inc, is that Space Mountain will be updated to the DL version. I hear late 2007 or early 2008. Anyone else hear this?

I have never been to DL, but I am also told the new SM has been well received by guests.

I just wish they'd replace the soundtrack with the older, surf guitar music. That would be so cool. :woohoo:

WDW's Space Mountain (as I recall) has single-file seats. DL's version has side by side seats and also just got a new track layout that is *much* smoother than the previous version.

I rode WDW SM last September and DL SM in April

With regards to DL-SM - WOW! It was amazing. I have always liked DLs a bit better than WDW but the improvements put it miles ahead.

It is hard to explain the difference - WDW is single file seating (Like the Matterhorn at DL) while DL is two across. This makes DL a bit more comfortable and easier to load and unload.

The lift hill at DL has multiple phases. I only rode it once in April but you would go up a ways in a tunnel with one type of effect and then go flat for a bit around a corner and then up another lift with a different effect and the effects were stunning.

The ride itself seemed smoother and a bit wilder at DL. Also the ride seemed darker and a much better job was done of hiding the ride structure. My niece described WDW SM as riding a roller coaster at night. You could very much tell you were on a roller coaster, you could make out the track, supports etc. At DL we were far less conscious of the ride structure, layout etc. This also made turns and dips more surprising, because they were less obvious until you were into them.

The end is somewhat similar, they both have similar effects in the braking tunnel.

DLs new Space Mountain is great, it would take a lot of work to make WDWs match it, but hopefully they will.

One other neat feature that DLs SM had was the way it handled handicapped access. Right in front of the standard loading station was a transfer track. Don't know if I can describe this well or not, but it was two parallel tracks that slide sideways. So if a train was on this piece of track, it could shift to the side. The track and the train could shift to the left with a new piece of track in its place. So they would bring a train onto this track, slide it to the left into a special boarding area. This is where handicapped riders could board. While the one train was there, other trains could continue to load and be disbatched going over the other piece of track. This let handicapped riders load at their own pace, no rush and no one was held up. Once the train was loaded, they shifted the track to bring the side train back on the main track and send it off. When it returned to the station, they did the same thing to unload it. It kept the trains moving, but gave extra loading and unloading times to folks who needed it. It was very well designed.

Rence pretty much nailed it...Ive been on both, DL's just a month ago and DL's is on a totally new level compared to WDW's now...I never rode the old DL version, but WDW would have to do a lot to make it as good IMO.

I think the old DL was just as jerky as WDW is now.

So yes the improvements made a hugh difference without taking away from the jist of the ride it's self.

Dl is now just great and if WDW gets this it will be a fastpass only ride as the waits will never go down.

I haven't been to DL yet, but our SM is way too bright inside. it's still one of my favorites in the MK, but we shut our eyes when we ride to block out the light.

I'd like to see an updated but not the down time like DL's

Agreed, remember, SM at DL was down for about two years for the updates.

It was definitely worth it (as evidenced by the three-hour waits I incurred while visiting in January); however, I would think that something fresh would have to be unveiled in WDW Tomorrowland to keep people happy if they're going to have SM down for two years.

True...BUT...it may not be that bad for WDW IF they could do a partial rehab...WDW has 2 tracks and DL only has 1...so I wonder if they could cut down on the closed time by only updating one track at a time?

I thought that too, but it would be very difficult for the workers to work in the dark..... I guess they could work only at night

Love DL's SM. The light effects and music are awesome. It is much darker and smoother.

Get rid of the dual track. Have just one track and make the ride longer and faster. Capacity will possibly even increase with a longer track and if the cars are configured as they are in DL.

If they do a re-model it will be closed for a long time (at least a year). My understanding of why the DL reno took so long is the logistics of working through a hole in the roof.

I am not sure that doing just one track at a time would work either. They would need to cut out a large section of the roof, which would make it very bright inside.

I just rode it in April. In the updated DL Space Mountain - it is quite dark. There aren't any "chocolate chip cookies" floating in the sky. And, there is now music -- which really enhances the ride.

I heard DL Space Mountain has a rock soundtrack. Also, changing WDW's SM would increase lines all around the park.

DL has a rock soundtrack, but only for Grad Nights and although the idea was to have it become the soundtrack for later night time rides, I've heard that isn't going to happen.

The current DL soundtrack is more orchestral sounding but still a bit fast paced and exciting.
