WDW Should Not Open in July. Discuss.

So let me ask you this. Since Orlando is not in the situation Miami is in. Given the choice between 100% that the Walt Disney World Corp will go bankrupt or have WDW stay open, which would you choose, with social distancing?

I know the question wasn’t directed at me but there is no way I would risk my health for Disney. I wouldn’t go to Florida now, not even if my vacation was free.

Even if disney entered into some form of bankruptcy (unlikely) it would likely be rescued.

More likely they would be receive a bailout long before bankruptcy though.

So, in my opinion they should stay closed for now. I'm not saying stay closed for entire 2020, it should be reviewed weekly, but right now FL should be shutting down rather than opening up.

Yup, completely agree. I don't think it's a "Disney stays open with social distancing....or Disney goes bankrupt!" situation at all. Disney tapped their massive credit line when this all started. They could shut all operations down for the remainder of the year, likely even until we have widespread inoculation from a vaccine, and still survive. But I don't think anyone is saying that they need to go that far. The states with exponential viral spread are the ones that did not follow the C.D.C guidelines. They opened early and were cheered on to do so. Now those poor decisions have come home to roost. And so, they should shut down and get their community spread under 1.0 and then open up slowly and carefully like other states have. Otherwise, this whole nightmare will continue...for all of us.

Germany had 500 new cases yesterday....for their entire nation. Canada had 400. Florida had over 6,000, which was a lower tally in the previous few days.

You're skipping over my point that if protests were the cause, we should see spikes in every major city where they are occurring. We aren't. We ARE seeing it in cities where they are opening restaurants, bars, and there are large college parties which all also skew to a younger crowd. Ergo, people are blaming the latter rather than the former.

I don't believe that there have been any spikes from the outdoor protests in major cities that we saw a couple of weeks ago. In Oklahoma, the numbers have definitely gone up, but hard to say what the cause is, as they seeing a spike in cases across the state. Some cities are rolling back some of opening....back to 50% of bar capacity, that kind of thing. But, at this point, I think we all know that indoors is where this virus transmits.

Did you even read that article? First, there has been one report on this stemming from Fox News and I read this several days ago. Nothing more. Once you get past the headline which acts like the Protests Caused It All, you read this:

In Miami-Dade protests were a “contributing factor” to spiking cases, a spokesperson for the mayor told Fox News.

A team of medical experts who advise Mayor Carlos A. Giménez have told him that based on information in local emergency rooms, the protests were a contributing factor to the spread of the virus, “along with our community letting its guard down and not social distancing or wearing masks, as mandated. Graduation parties, house parties and restaurants illegally turning into clubs after midnight all contributed to the spike.”

Giménez issued a curfew last week in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus in the county.

Meanwhile, Seattle city health official James Apa told Fox News any impact of protests was marginal: “A small percentage of the total number of cases reported going to a protest, which may or may not mean they acquired it there. Protests are not driving our upsurge in cases.”

Pretty much opposite of the misleading headline. But you go ahead and stop and the headline and make it fit the mantra you've been espousing here.

What I don't understand is why everyone is worked up over WDW reopening yet there isn't a similar uproar over all of the other Orlando theme parks reopening.

I don't think any theme parks should open. I've said I don't think any vacation destination should open. No theme parks, no casinos, no concert venues, no sports arenas, nothing. Shut down travel. People moving around the country, and from low to high risk areas and back specifically, is just bad. I don't care about the economics of it, the economy will recover. I care about the blatant disregard for people. And no, it doesn't work that people who are afraid just stay home because those travelers bring the illness back to other areas where the people that were responsible and stay home end up exposed anyway.

Everyone that isn't actually essential stay home, maybe for many months, and wait for the virus to stop spreading around the country. Had we done that originally and stayed closed through July or August we might not be in this situation.

As I wrote on another thread I am so confused on why anyone would go this month. I keep trying to look at things from a different perspective but keep coming up empty handed. I mean why take any risk in regards to your families to attend a watered down version of the parks amid a pandemic?

Selfishness. There is no other explanation. Any travel will move this virus around the country which is bad. We cancelled all vacations this year, even to the cabin we were planning to go to because traveling to another state is just irresponsible. There will be future trips, no need to push ahead with this year's.

What I predicted is indeed coming to pass when people said you cannot leave it locked down. People must live. We have had several restaurants close again because employees are positive. Our city pool just closed because 2 life guards are positive. Daycares have had to close. This will be our world until a vaccine or treatment. Close, open, close, open. And since the disease sometimes lasts weeks or months, essential employees being out could cripple the business.

So even opening does not mean life will be normal while the virus rages. Also, immunity doesn't seem to be lasting, which is really, really upsetting to me. But the latest study in Spain just confirms what others say.

All that to say, Disney can open but CM 's will get it at MK, so that will close for a week, then AK a few weeks later, etc. That will not make people feel confident. Numbers going will be too low to sustain.

That is life with the virus until it is gone. Our economy will have to change because of it.

I just don't see it going this way. It would require massive government intervention to abruptly write off whole sectors of the economy for years on end without leading to widespread homelessness, hunger and eventually, civil unrest. People talk about how difficult reopening and learning to live with the virus is, but few talk about how ugly the alternative could (and likely will, starting with the end of the unemployment extension and the resumption of eviction/foreclosure proceedings) be if we take the attitude that tens of millions of Americans should just find another way to make a living in an atmosphere where no entertainment, dining, or retail can function.

Take your pick, the amount of reasons people justify it with seem endless. Its all a hoax. Its just the flu. It doesn't spread via x/y/z. It only affects those with existing conditions. Disney will be the safest place you could be.

None of those make sense to me, but its impossible to convince some people.

I'm surprised people aren't more concerned about saving the money right now with no one knowing how bad the economy is going to get right now.

I didn't want to have to go there. I know a lot of people on the DIS forums are reasonable and most are willing to have a civil debate. It is however a bit disappointing that your reasons ARE probably the main reasons people are coming up with. I mean most of us here are fanatics, but we also have children (that have no say) and significant others, both of which some are willing to roll the dice on. Who rolls the dice on their loved ones?

So true. This could go on for quite some time and have long lasting financial consequences for millions. I love to travel, but even I am pretty much staying put. We also were going to do some home improvements, but have been only doing small things like paint since we really don’t know what is coming down the road.

I'm also seeing a lot of people who were 100% behind the lockdown and being cautious during the lockdown now not bother at all with social distancing. I can't figure out if they think it is now somehow safe to just do what they want or if they just got so tired of it all they can't be bothered with it regardless of the risk.
