WDW Shocks the Coffee Industry

My summer intern's family owns a coffee importing and roasting business in NJ. We were lucky enough to be given a personal tour by her dad (Mr. C) yesterday. We are coffee lovers, so our favorite-- Kona at Disney--came up during the conversation.

Mr. C laughed and told us about a meeting of international coffee roasters he attended at the Grand Floridian. People outright gasped when the "coffee" was served--they were shocked that WDW was serving "liquid Nescafe." They really could not believe that a first-class place like the GF would not serve a decent ground roast coffee.

You would think someone in event/banquet services would have had a clue!!

I told Mr. C he should pitch WDW to switch to his coffee (which is absulutely outstanding).

YES, please do, that slop is...well........slop!:crazy2:

That's corporate sponsorship for you...

Nescafe will no doubt pay Disney massive sums of cash to be "the official coffee of WDW" and unless the little firms that make good coffee can sponsor Disney in a similar manner, then you're going to be drinking Nescafe for a looong time.

please, I hope someone can bring some good stuff in. I say they partner with Starbucks and make a run for it.

Starbuck's is as bad as Nescafe. Go with an indy roaster. They know what they are doing and do it well. Of course, it won't ever happen, but then I don't drink the coffee at WDW anyway. I bring my own.

I've said it before - it's a brown crayon dipped into lukewarm water. (and that from someone who used to work for Nestle...)

"Starring Rolls" behind The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney-MGM Studios has GREAT coffee :smooth: (Not NesCafe tm)!

I plan on bringing my own Community Coffee with me. DH and I can't stand anything else.

DH and I bring our grinder, our press pot and our electric kettle. First morning at WDW, we have breakfast at the Kona Cafe and buy a few sacks of Kona beans. Then we grind and brew in our room for the rest of the week.

There is no way DH could be without good "real" coffee for 9 days!

WDW really needs to re-think the Nescafe deal when a top of the line hotel like the Grand Floridian is serving liquid concentrate as a stand in for coffee. It's pathetic. The number of posts on the subject of WDW coffee on the DIS alone prove that there is consumer demand for decent coffee.

Or at least give consumers a choice. That way if we want to pay more for something better we can.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but my mom is and she thought the famous Kona coffee served at the Kona Cafe was a huge let down. A watered down brown crayon pretty much sums it up.

barbeml... I'm so glad to see someone else brings their french press to Disney -- I found a great stainless steel french press to take with us. It's sort of thermos that's also a french press. DH thought I was crazy, until we were able to sit on the balcony at Vero Beach and enjoy really good coffee. Now it's the first thing he packs for our trips.

scootert--that sounds like a cool gizmo. My DH also insists the "coffee gear" gets packed first.

Beachangel--are you sure she had the 100% Kona Press Pot? I have enjoyed that coffee at the Kona Cafe a dozen times and it has always been rich and delicious. Can't imagine what they served your poor Mom!

scootert -

Can you please tell us where you found the stainless steel french press?

Thanks!

I bring Dunkin' Donuts brand Coffee, its the BEST!!!::yes:: I bring my own 1 cup coffee maker, and make a cup every morning.;)

The coffee saga continues......

wdw in the past did have decent coffe that was Nescafe' just not that liquid crap.

It is because of that rotten coffe they serve at the GF why we will never stay there. The GF does not provide coffee makers. When I requested one I was told to order a carefee from room service which was the nescafe crap. My mom has never forgiven WDW for depriving her a good cup of coffee when she wakes up. She actually left a day early she was so irritated.

We got our stainless steel french press pot from the camping section of our local sporting goods store - we originally bought it for camping. Wish I'd made room for it in our trip to WDW, I switched to Diet Coke after the first morning :( . It's a "Glacier Stainless Steel JavaPress" made by GSI Outdoors - you can probably find something like it on-line at maybe REI or someone that handles outdoor/camping supplies... Not cheap - maybe $35 and it makes ~ 6 cups.

Anyone know how long Disney's sponsorship deal w/ Nesafe is for? Wasn't it just recently signed?? Flying Fish and CA Grill assured me they didn't serve Nescafe when we were there last month - is that true (and how did they get to switch?) I didn't order it at the "nicer" restaurants..

That sounds like a nice French Press. I got mine at Target for $14.99. I initially bought it for camping in our RV on a trip this summer to Yellowstone, but we liked the coffee it made so much that we have been using it since our June trip. I had never thought about bringing it to WDW. Hmmmmmm.

Maybe we can start some kind of petition for WDW to serve "good"coffee (not here on the boards/ against the rules here I think!!). We shipped our french press, grinder, Starbucks beans and electric kettle for boiling water last spring. I would go through major withdrawals without a decent cup of java. And I am with the group that thinks the Kona french press pot was very lame. I was sooo disappointed. I would always make some extra coffee and save it for a big iced coffee in the late afternoon on our balcony. Does life get any better than that??Anyone try the Starbucks at the Dolphin's Fresh restaurant? Is it decent or is it like the Starbucks in Barnes and Noble Cafes.....not the same as a real Starbucks.
