WDW in the Summer - Thoughts?

Hi! My family and I are planning our first ever RV road trip this August and the kids want to go to WDW, since we haven't been there in over a year. This is the only time we'll be able to make a trip back to WDW this year.

Obviously, we would be staying at the Fort Wilderness Campground. I've never been there. And I've never been in an RV before either. Two major firsts for this trip.

Now my question is, what is it like in Disney in August? I know it will be hot. That's a given. I thought about going to the waterparks in the morning followed by a rest period in the afternoon and then on to the parks in the early evening. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a very exciting trip with lots of "firsts".
Yes it will be hot, humid, crowded and hurricane season as well.
Breaking the days down the way you described is wise but there will be no avoiding heat and crowds completely with an August trip.
Just prepare for it the best you can, set expectations and enjoy yourselves immensely :-)

we've done August a couple times and it has been fine. the last two weeks the crowds really die down. I mean, it is hot and some days really uncomfortable but there is AC everywhere.

Yes, I think your plan is a very good one! Getting to the waterparks early is key as the lines build as the day goes on, plus it gets hotter! We typically get there as soon as it opens, swim and do slides until about 12:30 - 1 pm, get a QS lunch in the waterpark and head out. If it isn't too hot or crowded yet, we might play a round of mini-golf at WinterSummerland before we leave BB.

Yes, go back in the afternoon to rest and head back out in the evening (we typically head out again around 6-6:30 pm). Be prepared for brief rain showers almost everyday. We find evening temperatures to be lovely after the sun goes down!

We've visited in June for the last two years (2015 and 2016) and we are going back again this year. Yes, it is hot - but with a solid plan, that time of year is a great time to visit. Over the last two years, we've run in to minimal refurbishment/closures and the park hours have been nice and long. I'm not sure how long you are staying, but I would recommend visiting the parks at rope drop at least a couple days during your visit. The number of attractions that you are able to get through in a very short amount of time can't be beat. Then, as the sun comes up and it starts to get hot, you can relax. Some days we go back to the resort/pool, others we just go to less-traveled areas of the park and shows with large air-conditioned theaters.

Thanks for all the input! It's always good to hear from others who have been during the summer.

Almost all of our WDW trips have been in the summer, and we love it. Yep, it's hot, but it's Florida in the summer, so that's par for the course. There's nothing wrong with doing water parks in the morning and parks in the evenings, we do that on some days, but don't feel like you "have to". So many of the rides are air conditioned. If you use common sense, you can do mid-afternoons in the parks. The crowd does drop a bit in mid-afternoons, because so many people either rope drop and leave by 1pm or wait until 5pm to show up. But lots of great things in the summer....
Longer hours at the parks, longer daylight hours, water parks are more fun, water rides like Kali are more fun.
