Walt Disney World to spend 15 million dollars on Disney Transportation to Buy New Buses and Upgrade existing Buses. Disney will begin installing new Digital Sound systems in all of its Bus Fleet making up RTS, Nova and Gillig Buses. Each Bus will soon have automatic spiels system and pay Disney Park Music on the way to the park.

Sorry no information on Monorail expansion at this time. pirate:

Also there will be different Music and Spiels depending on which park the buses are going to and from.

I wish that it was going for monorail expansion instead. :teeth:
The only problem is that any monorail expansion would cost at least 60 times that amount.

I am so exited I have been saying the disney buses should have music for a long time now(everything else does).... I wonder how long this will take.

ps... I hope the spiels are activated about things viewed from road... like the monorail (on your right you will see...)

During our October trip, a Driver told us that in one to two years Disney plans to convert the entire fleet to the Gillig bus. All busses are to be GPS equipped.
He told us that one of the good things about the Gillig busses is the wheelchair ramp. If the mechanics fail, it can be opened and closed manually.

The next shipment of New Gillig buses will have this capability when they go online late this year or early next year, many of the RTS buses are being Retired and replace by the Gillig buses. If you have rode one of the Gillig buses recently, you may have notice a large cabinet behind the driver, this is where all the Electronics will go for the automatic spiels system. Disney wants to have the new system up by April 2007.

One note, Disney is also moving ALL the Dispatch Coordinators from the parks to a Control room that will be located at TTC, they will use a Camera to see if there are guest in a load zone at each park and at the Resorts, so I not sure if having someone miles away will work to direct buses to where they will be needed at. pirate:

I tell ya, this is the most magically magical thing I've heard in a while. New Busses. Yippie!

knock it if you will, but the busses are a vital part of WDW. and with a bazillion people on them each day, its good to see that they're spending some dough to make even the most mundane part of your vacation just that much better.
now if they could just put a dimmer on the inside lights to avoid the 11:30PM back to your resort wake-up blinding white flash.

Ok, to me, while this is perfectly appropriate news for this board, there's not much worth commenting on. Improving operational efficiency and adding some music is nice, but don't sell it to me as an altruistic attempt to make the mundane portion of my vacation that much better (why am I hearing Lina Lamont in my head right now?).

While this has nothing to do with the monorail or any other larger scale updating of the transportation system, it does remind some that said updating does not appear to be anywhere in offing, and we are left with some new busses and some music. That's all.

This update will make Walt Disney World transportation more efficient. With GPS all the busses will know where every bus is. There will also be updates to the bus stops which will let the busses know when people are present. The bus system is technically a better type of transportation then the monorail if you look at it overall. There are more busses than monorail trains. Think about it, what would happen if a monorail breaks down. Then that track is completely blocked off. The cost is so high to build the monorail that it would take years to just pay off, if it would ever be payed off. There would also have to be strategic monorail stops, there's no way a monorail station would be placed at each resort. I'm pretty sure no matter what CM tells you, I highly doubt you will see any monorail expansion in the future until it gets more cost effective.

hi all,
actually some of the busses already have gps systems.there doing this as a sort of piolt program.the ones that have gps are the ones that when you board have the large black/grey looking cell phone thing next to the driver, plugged into the dash board.

This is absolutly not true. It's cheaper to build. It's not cheaper to maintain and it's not more efficent at moving people.

It's also not as cool or unique as the monorail, and no one can dispute that.

I wonder if we'll be able to hear anything over the squeaky brakes on those buses?

Busses are certainly more efficient in certain areas, such as adjusting capacity.

Well, there is certainly a reason more metropolises have elaborate bus systems than they do elaborate monorail systems.........but WDW should be a little snazzier than most cities the size of WDW.

Oh well.

Improving the buses is better than not improving the buses, but it's not as good as looking for new and exciting alternatives. Of course $15 mil is a drop in the bucket and it would hard to do more with that kind of chicken feed.........not that Disney shouldn't spend more on somehting better.

Oh, well.

Somehow I don't think all that will bother me in three days time ;). WDW here we come...............

There's also a reason most major cities are spending their cash on Lightrail right now.
