One of the smartest things I ever did was to start this before I knew we were moving. I pulled all the glasses, mugs and cups out of a cabinet. I put back the ones I liked (underline the I). Then I asked DH, DS#2 and our extra son-not-born-to-us if they wanted any of the others. They checked them over, said no and I was done. I put all the unwanted ones in the donate bags and got rid of them. I did the same with fabric, craft supplies, etc.
When we knew we were moving and would be downsizing to a condo 1/4 the size of our house I still had a lot to deal with but not as much. At that time I invited over a young friend who was setting up her first apartment. We went through the house room by room and I told her what was available and she put in her order. We loaded the chosen items into her car and mine and worked together to unload them at the apartment.
I also called friends to tell them we were moving, that the condo was small and I needed to get rid of _ _ _ _ _ _ and would list 5 or 10 things. 9 times out of 10 they were interested in something I needed to find a home for.

I now tell people that my things are alive and well in Northwest Indiana.
