Thanks Ken! And thanks everyone for looking. Now I have to narrow it down! I appreciate the help!

We are hoping to take DGS to Alaska with us. He went on the western with us 4 years ago. He asked at dinner tonight if we would get to go to Castaway Cay. Sadly, no....he was disappointed too. :)

Hi Angie! understandable reaction. How old is he now?

Understandable, yes... but DCL alone is prettty cool!

I want to bring Will with me sometime because he is DYING to go on a cruise. I don't want to start him on the Dream because when he goes on the other ships... it's gonna be a bit of a let down.

I don't know if I'm gonna let him know too much... don't want to ruin it too much for him... let him discover the best on his own... besides... he'll be in the teen club while I'm at Cove cafe...

He's 14... and that crazy teenage years, etc... but he's a great kid.. made the honor roll this semester!!!:banana::banana:

Michelle - congrats to Will on the honour roll :goodvibes. And I agree, don't tell him too much, let him discover it for himself :thumbsup2

Jan - nice to see you active in the thread again!

Hi to everybody

Was planning to get the christmas decorations all down today. But ended up losing 2hours of my afternoon to family. Not complaining though. Ken's sister & family stopped here on the way home from the hospital with the new baby. My DSIL is very honest that she was using our house as a stop so we could take care of her two girls while her DH ran to buy groceries. So of course, I simply had to hold the new baby for the entire time :upsidedowand my girls had fun looking after Emily (1.5yrs).:goodvibes

That sucks. But fully understandable. I'm sure we will cruise together sometime! And yes we really understand the importance of the new job - Shannon is in the same boat. Her new job isn't worth jeopardizing either.

Yes, and besides I think it was the compromise necessary at this time.

I did lose 3 vacation days with this move, but also am not carrying over vacation from the previous year as I had been.

For years now, I had been carrying over 10 days vacation. Well, now without that artificial buffer, I have to make hard choice about how to spread what I've got.

Still, there's a very big difference between a vacation being a rest break or a temporary respite from hell. I think that now vacations are going to be rest breaks for me.

I had lunch with some former colleagues this week, and we agreed that it's impossible to articulate how horrible it was. It always sounds like exaggeration.

I really don't feel bad about having to cancel, because now I look at it as a rest break, rather than a temporary leave from prison.

I fully understand the difference... There are times when I need a break from the hell at my job and other times when it is simply a rest ... sometimes it has been hard to separate the two.

Now this is the Employment counsellor in me talking and yes i'm going to be bringing in some work to the thread - but only because I am curious...

Here in British Columbia our Employment Standards act defines vacation time. After 12 months of work a staff member is entitled to 10 days of vacation (which can be taken any time afterwards with the consent of the company and in various "groupings"). And after 5 years they are then entitled to 15 days vacation.

My company (for which I act as the HR department) signs staff into approximately 1 year Employment Agreements (based on contracts we have in place). For vacation we start all new employees off with 10 days vacation time allotted (pro rated based on start dates) without the 12 month wait period. So a new staff member can start taking vacation right away if we agree. Their second full year of service (which would be under a new EA) they are then given 15 days of vacation (basically we ignore the 5 year requirement). But there is a catch. Because staff are hired under the Employment Agreement, they MUST take their vacation days within the term of that EA. If they do not take all of their vacation time, then they forfeit those days. We do not allow for carrying over of vacation days from EA to EA.

I'm curious what the regulations are in Illinois.

And here's when they sailed past the Dream on their way out of port...a GREAT photo:

And here's a view from the outlook bar towards the adult pool:

I'm going to ask her for photos of the 2nd floor of Cove Cafe...don't think I've seen any of those on the DIS. ?

Great Pics... The QM has already chosen her chair up in the Outlook... and her drink... :goodvibes

I'm curious what the regulations are in Illinois.

I'm not sure about the Illinois state regulations and if it embraces vacation time. That would be interesting to know, but I don't think it does since I've never heard of any state law that speaks to it.

Most companies I've heard of you earn your vacation as you go but you can can take your vacation in arrears, meaning, I could take vacation now that I haven't yet technically earned.

My new place is somewhat odd in that the time is divided into buckets of vacation, sick, floating holiday and community volunteering time. This is odd because most companies these days seem to have gone with straight Paid Time Off (PTO) that can be sued for anything the employee wants. I was assured before joining that I could think of the all these as one big lump and the buckets were a financial breakdown.

I can carry over vacation but stop earning once I have 96 vacation hours in my bucket, and so would then lose hours and stop accruing.

It can all be very confusing and changes so much from one company to another.

For me, the net effect with my old company I was going into 2010 with 25 PTO days and a carry over of 5 from 2010 for a total of 30 PTO days. I have 22 days where I am and obviously no carry over.

I guess I have to really start thinking about 1012 and whether I want to be on a "vacation diet" and save time for 2012.

On a completely different note, I have long time envied how civilized Canada is. I often wonder what it would be like to live in the civilized part of North America.

I think of Canada as "Healthy Choice North America," 100% of the goodness with half the crap.

LOL. Don't get me wrong I am a VERY proud Canadian. But the old adage about green grass on the other side of the fence holds true.

He is now 11, 7 when he cruised with us before.

Oh a new baby is so sweet to hold!!! They just smell so good!! :goodvibes:cloud9:

Vacation....let's see. If we wake up we are on paid vacation. :thumbsup2 If we do not wake up the pay stops. The hours are great, the pay not so much. :lmao:

I'm flipping out with excitement. We're doing a stateroom tour while on the Dream maiden voyage. I just found out that we're getting in to see a Royal Suite. OMG the Royal Suite on the Dream....it doesn't get any better than that!! I'll take LOTS of pictures and post here for Kathe to see them too.

:cool1: How exciting Deb! I'm looking forward to seeing all those pics, thanks :thumbsup2

No absolutely not. We are paid in full. It was part of the discussion when Shannon took the job that she would require the time off for the cruise. They said no problem.

However we have looked at other vacations and other things that we have had to say "no" to because of the same issues Ian is talking about.

:yay::yay::yay: Well, I'm glad you are not cancelling Alaska!

I am taking 3 weeks vacation, as I am arriving early, then spending a few days in Vancouver afterwards. I also have had to make choices, due to vacation funds, which means that although I will still have one week vacation left this year, I will have to spend it at home. However, I am hoping to take a long weekend or two off work this summer, and I am hoping I can manage a couple days to go to NF to see Holly, Tyler, Deb and John and anyone else that might be able to swing by :)

Hi Angie! :flower3:

We have to keep this thread going while Marilyn is gone... wouldn't want her to come home and find out we're on the same page!!!
