So, not only did our pathetic country close down this week because of the snow, we are just about out of salt and grit, so they are only gritting very main roads. It is treacherous out.

Our council have not cleared the roads around us and it is 4" solid ice, and the footpaths are thick ice too. We walked(very carefully) into town yesterday and saw one older man with a walking stick fall over(he was ok), and another very elderly man with a stick trying to make his was down a footpath. A younger person went to help him. It really is very bad. People have to get out. I am so cross about it.

This is so sad Marilyn. I think they should at least keep some ice melt in storage for the one in a while storms that you could get. You need some help. Even though it doesn't happen often they should be better prepared for when it does.

Holly, great news about booking the trip. Looking forward to seeing you on the 7th!!
I'm looking forward to it too! :cool1: I hope I get to see the rest of the Florida folks too sometime that week. Heather, Tom & Bethany (ThreeBritts) are planning on joining us a few days that week too, but we haven't worked out the details yet.

Really I know. I think it is just that the council hasn't cleared footpaths and local roads and I don't like to think of people having accidents. We haven't needed much salt/grit for quite a few years. I can see all the councils getting enormous stocks in for next winter and there being no snow!!! Can't win.

We did actually have a gritter lorry along our road one day - but the gritter was turned off!!!:confused3

Experts are saying this is a cyclical thing for the UK and we can expect a few cold winters now. Noting to do with global warming etc. We shall see.

What's a gritter lorry??? I have never heard of it.:confused3 :confused3

Deb, our prices haven't changed for the cruises.

So your Western is still about $500 less than your Eastern??? I wonder why mine went up? I will have to send an email to DU asking for an explanation.

Oh my gosh, that's horrible. It must be very hard to plan for though, since you don't usually get that much snow. I can't imagine trying to get around with conditions like that. I hope it warms up for a few days or a week so it can all melt.

AND....the name of the girl holding the gun on Daniel Faraday back on one of the island 'time jumps' is Ellie.....and Daniel said to her "You remind me of..." then he stopped and said something else. And remember the scene where Eloise is in the chruch basement and she's writing all those formulas on the chalkboard????? And remember young Widmore is back on the island with young Ellie AND old Widmore had "Daniel's mother's" current address right in his planner AND Widmore is financing Daniel's experiements......::yes::

Yea, all of that.....it's so good.:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

It's 45F right now!

When I let the dogs out a few minutes ago, I was out on the front porch with in just my lounge stuff.

As predicted the mess is starting. Lake Eastwood is already forming at the bottom of our front stairs

It apparently warmed up during the night because I woke up to find the house too warm, so I turned the heat OFF. :rotfl2: During the night, I kept being woken up by the sound of icicles and ice chunks CRASHING to the ground. This is good news because my gutters have about 10 inches of ice (no exaggerating) stacked up the whole length, so I'm worried about the weight of it pulling the gutters off the house. :scared: Worried about ice dams too. Don't want my roof to start leaking because it's a pretty new roof.

Just checked the temp and its 44. Says that's our high for the day though, and back to cold tomorrow.

The mechanism distributes grit and salt along the icy/snowy roads.
If you happen to get up close or be on the other side of the road your car can be hit, sometimes quite hard if the gritter's settings are for spreading ove a wide area.! John doesn't like that.

Don't you have these?

Oh! Yes, we have those.....but we call them spreaders or salters. Now I get it. Thanks Marilyn.:goodvibes

Yup, we call them salt trucks. I love hearing the different terms for things. :thumbsup2

Well, we rebooked onboard for the Eastern so got the discount, so perhaps there isn't too much of a difference if you take that into account.

What a very moving story Lisa....you really are special for touching so many lives the way that you do.:flower3: :flower3: :flower3:

What actually is your 'lounge stuff' Ian? Do you mean nightwear, or your smoking jacket?;)

Drawer string (I hesitate to say) pants and a long sleeve t-shirt.

I'd love to have a smoking jacket, though.

Hi!! Marilyn!!

:wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: :wave2:

I can not believe your ICE story....but I know exactly what you are speaking of. It does not snow much in DC here, like where you are and when it does snow, it is like you are experiencing. I heard on the news this is the worst it has been there in 18 years!! Stay safe

We have salting trucks. We have way too much snow for grit and sand to anything other than make a mess.

As soon as it starts snowing, the plows and salters are out. However, only main streets are done, side streets and alleys are never done. Homeowners are expected to shovel their sidewalks.

Snow removal and trash removal are two of the pivotal issues in Chicago. Both are excellent.

A mayor once lost his office because the streets had not been plowed and salted fast enough.

The city never really stops.
