Why does it bother anyone if there are certain hotel rooms set aside for smokers? I've never understood why it matters.

Because the smoke doesn't just stay in those rooms but drifts to other non smoking areas.

It doesn't matter.. smokers will just smoke in the bathroom like they do now in non-smoking rooms anyway, the hotel won't really be able to "prove" they smoked and life will go on just like it does now

Ah, but if they follow through with what they say they will do...which is if they smell smoke in the room, they add $200 to that occupant's bill...that might quell a few people from doing that. But they are going to have to follow through with it and not just have it be a policy to make it stick and make people more apt to follow the rules.

A well-built hotel shouldn't allow smoke to travel. Of course, I guess that most aren't well-built based on how much noise travels.

Not really...if they open the door and smoke billows out that is one thing but otherwise they have to prove nobody had smoked in the room before etc etc which they really have no way to do. "smelling smoke" is really a matter of opinion.

Remember they are not in the business of fighting with guests. What they will do is go after the really obvious ones, leave the rest alone and if a guest complains a room smelled "smoked in" they will move them. Really the same thing they do now.
