Waterproof digital camera

Thank you so much for reporting back to us as I am contemplating between this and waterproof Panasonic Lumix.

Thanks for posting the wonderful pics. I'm still torn between Olympus Tough 8000 and the Cannon D10. We don't cruise until Nov so I have a little time to check them out.

You're very welcome!! I think one of the hardest things about waterproof cameras, is most stores not carrying them. And then if they do, they only carry one kind. I would love to stand in a store and try each and every one of them.

I've been scouring the internet trying to decide which one to get. Canon got my business because of brand loyalty. :)

Hi Disneyfalcon, thanks for posting the info so quickly. i like what i see. i'm a little surprised there is no retractable lens cover. we cruise the end of june but i want to get the camera early so i can get used to it. i'm primarily going to use the camera for underwater picture and video taking. does the camera take a long time to reset after using the flash? also, have you tried video underwater? would the buttons be easy to operate underwater?

sorry for all the questions.

No problem Ellen! Ask away!

I was suprised by the lens cover thing too. I don't know if that's normal or not. Maybe someone who has an Olympus could tell us if their's does.

I was glad to see that it takes some good pictures on land, but I definitely bought it primarily for underwater use. I have a camera for every day use that I love. I really wanted something that would take better pictures than the AWFUL ones the disposable one we used in January took. Not to mention with the ruggedness of it, I thought it would be good for the kids too.

I haven't tried the video underwater, but it looks great in my living room!

The controls are very easy to use. I don't think they'll be a problem above or below water.

The camera has a continuous shooting mode which is nice. I tried it with the flash on, and while it wasn't instantaneous, there were only 2 or 3 seconds between bursts.

flash delay time is not bad.

my reasons for purchasing this camera are the same as yours. i'll spend the money to get a good underwater camera instead continuously purchasing the disposables.

thanks for answering my questions. time for me to head home. if i think of anything else (which i probably will) i'll ask. if you do any more testing, please let us know.

thanks again, ellen

disneyfalcon,

a couple of questions already. what does the camera come with. is the wrist strap floatable? i'm thinking that might be a good thing to invest in.

It just comes as is with the cords, battery, charger and wrist strap. The wrist strap does not float. I agree, that would be a good thing to invest in.

It is very easy to tighten the strap around your wrist though so it wouldn't come off.

I will make it a rule with my kids - they don't pick up the camera without immediately tightening the strap around their wrist. Just like the remotes for the Wii!!

Thanks so much for the review!! The pictures are great!

I have studied the waterproof cameras so much and couldn't wait...I just ordered my Canon D10. I am actually happy that the lens does not retract. That was one of the big problems they were having with the Olympus cameras. Sand would get caught in the lens and cause problems as it opened and closed. The two big reasons I went with Canon are the picture quality and the fact that I can use an SD card. The XD card that you had to use with Olympus is what turned me off from them. From what I have read, everything else about them is wonderful.

I was and still am a bit concerned about the bulkiness of the D10, but figured it would work the best for what I need it for. I'll let you know!

Thanks again Disneyfalcon for the pictures and reviews. Oh, and I am with you on the Wii wrist straps....it is a must for us here, too!!

You're welcome Ali! I hadn't heard that about the Olympus, that makes sense now! I also appreciate the SD cards and I didn't like the idea of using a converter on the cards.

Don't worry, it's still a small camera. It's just not flat, like some of the others. I'm used to carrying a big camera and big lens, so even if I can't slip it in a pocket, being able to wear a camera around my wrist is heaven!

where did you order the D10 from?

Hi
I have been watching this thread with great interest. One thing though, can I ask what kind of battery this camera uses? I love my lithium ion in my fuji as I can just plug it in and leave the battery in place. We have just not found any NiMh batteries (rechargeable or not) that last as long as ith lithium one does.

TIA
Wanda

PS. would love to see a shot of it against your hand like you suggested maybe sideways and direct on?

PPS. That was a beautiful shot of the fence line...loved it.

A good friend of mine is letting us use her Olympus underwater camera during our cruise -- yes, she's a great friend and I adore her giving spirit :hippie:. However, the camera doesn't have a floating wrist strap and thought I'd buy one for us to use for the cruise and give it to her when we return.
The Olympus one that I've found on Amazon has gotten some reviews where the camera did not float, but sank. Not good.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Wanda! I will take a pic with my hand tomorrow so you can see the size. It uses a NB-6L lithium ion battery. It's supposed to be a good one.

I got one from Amazon- it's an Olympus floating strap in red- it wound up being $13- shipping and all. My sister and I both have the water cameras- we are sharing it- she just used it for her cruise and LOVED it!!

Butterfly Photo - through Amazon. If you go to Amazon, it lists other sellers, and one of them is Butterfly.

I ordered it Monday night, and had it Wednesday afternoon. Free shipping.:)

thanks. When I go to Amazon, and a couple of other sites, I have not been able to find it. I have been really looking at the Olympus. Originally the 850, now the Tough 6000. Would not mind reading up on the D10, the pictures you took are great!

Okay here it is with my hand. I also took a couple so you could see what I mean about the lens not closing.

I got mine from Butterfly Photo, too. I have ordered from them before with no problems. Thanks for the pics, disneyfalcon. It's definitely is small...just wish the lens wasn't so obtrusive. Still the best choice for us, though!! Can't wait to get it!! Ali
