How is the sand in the water? Rocky, coral? Do you need water shoes? Never been to the Caribbean...used to New England beaches which can be quite rocky sometimes!

The "sand" at Castaway Cay is made up of crushed shells and coral. Tends to be pretty rough on feet. And the walkways around the site can get very hot. I always have water shoes.

I've been on the island when shoes are needed and when they aren't. It changes with the tides and storms and time and beach maintenance.
Better to have them and not need them than to have to spend $25 on Disney water shoes that don't fit well. (Looking at you, hubby and son who refused to consider them then we're all "ouch ouch ouch" when we got there)
I'm a little bit heavier so for me the Crocs try to float too much so I end up about falling over. I personally prefer an actual water shoe so it doesn't try to float my feet up (but definitely recommend something for Castaway as the first few feet into the water can be rough in areas.
