hey everyone! this is my first post ever.:yay: does anyone have a particular brand they prefer of those water misting fans? i've done research, but there doesn't seem to be any inexpensive fans that get high reviews.

DH and i are going next month (sept 10-16) for our first trip and i know how FL heat can be!

I can tell you from experience that they are heavy to carry around especially when hanging fron a lanyard around your neck.

On our first trip to Disney, we purchased a fan at AK. We have saved it and take it every year. We would never go without it. My daughter is now 12. I have told her that if she wants to use it, she has to carry it. She never complains about how heavy it is. She just wants to use it constantly to cool off. I have seen them at Wal-Mart recently for $7. They seem to be pretty nice. I was looking at them for my nieces. You may want to check them out there.

We travel to WDW in September also and yes, it gets very hot and humid! I don't bother with those big mister fans, I usually buy a small fan from Walmart for a few dollars and it does the trick for me. Plus, with all the kids there with mister fans, you will find yourself getting wet anyway!

so is it better just to get a little non-misting fan? DH and i are planning on each carrying a sackpack but if they are heavy (fan, i mean) i don't wanna be bothered...

The last time we went in August I used mine all the time. We bought three new ones from Walmart for our upcoming Disney trip. While they can be heavy I would not go without it. My body does not like the heat at all, and I don't think I would make it without being able to keep somewhat cool.

We brought 3 of these and they worked pretty well:

Bought 2 of these and EVERYONE HATED THEM. They aren't fast enough and the squirt trigger is impossible for my kids to work. (WIsh I would have never waited my money on these 2):

However, when we got to the park, we ended up buying 1 Disney Misting FAn (it held a TON more water) for $18, like this one, but with WDW on it;

The kids all preferred that one. It went faster and held more ICE water (you could put ice into the containers at the bottom). The kids fought over it.

We just HAPPENED to have lunch at Rainforest Cafe in Animal Kingdom on the 2nd day and they had the SAME water mist fans (in magenta) for $11 or $12 so we bought 2 more of those. They all had the lanyards, bigger water recepticles that fit ice and ran faster than the others I brought with me.

We bought two of the Disney misting fans on trips where we weren't quite prepared. They are great, but heavy. Taking this year, but since we have a stroller we can hang from there. Did buy a couple clip on fans at Wal-Mart for $4. For my 9 and 11 year old they can clip to shorts and still have while waiting in line. Probably pretty cheaply made and won't last, but for $4 and comfort I'm okay with that.

The fans hold around a quart of water and ice so they are over 2 lbs of dead weight.

As for them working I used one awhile back during August and in 100% humidity I really didn't want more water spayed on me.

If you had kids I would say get whatever one amuses him or her the most and keeps them from thinking about how hot they are. ;)

The best thing to do is common sense things like find shade dirnk before you are thirsty, go in to gift shops, know that rides like Ellen's Universe of Energy are 45 minutes of cool air, etc.

Yeah, the big ones are heavy. That said, if you have small ones, they can be lifesavers. If you have a stroller to help carry stuff, then you are golden.

I also carry the tiny ones. I don't think they help all that much, but they make me feel better. I bought mine at Walmart.

This year in addition to our old misting fan we also grabbed a small water spray bottle from the dollar store. It worked awesome! I put it in with our water bottles and it stayed nice and cold.

A couple of tips for misting fans:

1) Don't fill it all the way. Fill it halfway at most, I'd say, and it cuts down on weight. There are many water fountains and other sources of water all over the park, so there's no reason to lug it around fully loaded. I've personally never noticed that big a difference in cold water put in and water + ice, they both seem to cool the skin about the same. I wouldn't carry the extra weight of ice if weight is an issue.

2) Don't buy the one they sell at CVS. The fan itself is fine and functioned okay, but the battery compartment door was ridiculously flimsy and would come open at the smallest bump, really annoying. The hinges on that door broke not very long after we got the fan, and honestly, we were pretty careful with it. Now that this tiny part is broken, the entire fan isn't usable. Total waste of money. I'm hoping the one I bought at Target holds up better.

i picked up one of those O2 deluxe ones at walmart last night for like $9. i tested it out and it seems to work alright. doesn't appear like it will leak. battery compartment seems sturdy too. thanks for the tip about filling only halfway. makes sense to me!

I use mistymate. It's very small. No batteries, no fan at all. You pump it manually which builds up pressure and then you press the little button and it sprays out a very fine mist.... The kind you get when you're standing under one of the misting stations. So, you don't really get wet, the mist immediately evaporating off your skin brings your body temp way down. Works for me.

I am not a fan of any of the misters. They are just too heavy to carry around all day. I use my Frogg Toggs and one of those small key-chain type fans. They're less than two dollars at Wal-Mart (the fans) and hold up well to various sorts of abuse, including being dropped.

We love our mistymates too! They are small and need frequent refilling but the water warms up relatively fast anyway unless you keep in a cooler. I love the fine mist. The best is that they are small and light and don't use batteries...
