Watch out for Halloween CANDY Made in China!

The US has all sorts of safe guards for testing drugs that enter this country but don't do much of anything in the way of food except to stop things from entering that are banned... the government pretty much assumes the companies importing the stuff will make sure its safe... I for one don't just avoid stuff from china, but also from Mexico. If you look back a few years ago a lot of kids were getting lead poisoning from gum made in Mexico. Apparently lead oxide was being use as one of the coloring agents in some of the candies. Stick with stuff made in countries that care about their people... most of western europe, canada... when it comes to south of the border, I would trust argentina, brazil and chile... the rest of them don't have any real laws to keep things safe.

We have tons of Mexico imported candy here and I say..stay away. Also, China. Nothing that will go in a mouth..toys, food, etc.

ehh. I'll take my chances. I've never gotten sick or hurt from any food/products/make-up from anywhere yet.
But I dont' hand out candy anyway so, I guess it doesn't matter.

Perhaps I'm naive, but my understanding is that the U.S. doesn't even test all of its own food and meat.

Perhaps I'm doubly naive b/c when a lot of the Olympic Athletes were ill with "Stomach bugs" during the Olympics this summer, I wondered if it was because of the food and how it was handled? I "imagine" that athletes tend to eat fairly clean and maybe even a lot eat organic - changing to food from China might be a drastic enough change to have caused their illnesses?

Food from China, for the most part, has not been rigorously tested and the conditions in which the food is made....

China is not the cleanest country. Look at the fish from China contaminations. Most fish in the grocery stores comes from China where it was grown in conditions such as waste water, etc and that is proven.

Is this fresh fish or frozen fish? Supermarkets around here have to adhere to COOL requirements. Country Of Origin Labeling. So when you look at you seafood it tells so where it is from. It is spot checked by the state and you can be severely fined if you don't have the documentation upon inspection. Also the frozen fish I purchase always has a country of origin on it.

Consider yourself lucky around here you don't have the requirement to list the country of origin. I wish they did, I've seen a chain in Oklahoma that was listing origin for everything but I just don't see it in Texas.

I'm curious about New Jersey, do they require country of origin for the ingredients in stuff like breakfast cereals? I only ask because I recall reading somewhere back then the pet food was jacked up that some breakfast cereals that were made in the USA had ingredients that were imported form China in them just like the pet food... Afterall the pet food wasn't bad in and of itself it was just one of the ingredients that was used to make it was from China and was bad.

I agree totally. Did you guys all see the story about how something like 432 Chinese babies became sick/died from tainted Chinese milk? :scared1:

No thanks, thanks for the headsup!

Googled the baby formula, they said no import in the USA of baby formula... so tragic..

I just heard that baby formula coming from china may have the same poison in it that was in the dog food a couple of years ago. I never thought about candy coming from there.

It was stated the melamine - a plasitics ingredient - it made the formula appear richer than it was... and it was also added to the pet food supply...

so how easy it would be to bulk up candy by throwing this ingredient into it! :scared1: However, I seriously doubt it has been added... because of the toxic nature, it will be found pretty quickly by consumers.

Also a family did a year without anything from China and wrote, or blogged about how hard it really was!! This one a googled to provide a link...

The trouble is a lot of very bad stuff could be put in the food from china and you might not start seeing health issue for years... by that time it would be too late.... think about all the lead paint they use and you don't see kids suffering the day after they start playing with a puzzle set painted with lead... it takes time for the effect to show up and often the exposure build over time.

Anyone know what brands of candy are made in China (and sold at Target)? Is it Hersheys/Nestles, or the junk no-name candy?

It wont be the hersheys/nestles candies.. it tends to be the more noveltie type candies... like gummie stuff... although you also find a lot of gum that is also from china.

i heard they put communism in all of their candies in china and if you eat them you will become a communist? true story!

Why would you make such an obnoxious statement? Food imports from China are a true concern. I know several people whose pets got very ill from pet food from China and also have read about many families whose children tested very high for lead poisoning.
I try avoid all products that my child will handle if made in a country that doesn't have strict guidelines like the US

There are so many foods that originate form China it would be impossible to be sure you are not getting any. Much American-branded canned food originates elsewhere. There is often no point of origin listed on the can, only "Distributed By" both house brands and National brands.

Thanks! Between Halloween and Christmas, I buy so much candy, and I don't even think about where it was made. I appreciate the heads up. :goodvibes

Yes! Mostly anything with a type of "decoration" on it. Lots of lollipops and such are too!

I wouldn't want to give out that crappy candy to my neighbor's kids anyway! You can get some good deals on Hershey's this time of year so why take a chance. I wouldn't like my kids getting candy where you had to be concerned if it contained lead or harmful ingredients.

I know! The kids will come back and TP your house if you give them cheap garbage like no-name lollies and PAL bubble gum. ;)
