Washington DC

Putting it into perspective the distance from the Lincoln Memorial to Washington Monument is 1 mile then another mile to the Capitol. Then toss in any walking through museums. A detour over to the Jefferson/MLK/FDR memorials will add at least another mile.

Worth the $1 for sure! We didn't get our tickets beforehand and showed up a little before opening. Big mistake on our part. The line was already out the door. I won't make that mistake again, that's for sure. Ordering online is the only way to go!

Our trip was last minute so by the time we knew we were going both the tickets for the Washington Monument and Holocaust museum were gone online.

This trip was mainly for my 16 yo history buff so I asked him to pick monument or holocaust museum. He picked the museum. DD and I got in line 2 hours prior to opening so we could get tickets. And you are right there is absolutely no shade.
DD and I were first in line and we did get tickets. DH and DS packed the car and met us there with coffee and bagels. So yes be sure to order online.

The Holocaust museum is very surreal. Definetly not to be missed.

We booked the monument by moonlight tour online. Even though the tour is done by trolley , there is still some walking , but worth it as I said before.

We were in DC for 3 days and barely touched all there is to see.
Cant wait to return. Its a great place to visit.

We ate at a restaurant called Old Ebbitt Grill. A little pricey but kind of cool .

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice, even the weather worriers. DH & I are very attuned to his well-being and we do not hesitate to shut a vacation down, if we need to, and we have...twice. I've brought in some travel books for us to peruse and DH is making aost of his 4-6 must-sees. One or two tours are definitely on tap. Now all I need to do us decide on the hotel and find a decent bar that makes a sweet mojito!

I'm a DC resident, too. Live downtown, which is a great place. If your DH can walk but not long distances, could he ride a Segway? There is at least one, if not two, Segway tour businesses in the area. You'd get to see all the sites without the physical exertion. Otherwise, the HOHO busses and an evening ride are the way to go. The monuments in the day are beautiful, but at night it's a whole other story.

Hotels are plentiful, but staying in the city is expensive. National Harbor is nice but also pricey AND really hard to get to/from DC without a car. And there are stupid rules about taxis. Alexandria is a good choice and Old Town is nice. If you bring a car to drive around the city, plan out where you're going and use Parking Panda (smart phone app) to reserve a space for popular areas. Uber has lots of cars in/around the city and you can call a regular cab with the app. Just watch the Uber pricing scheme, they go into "surge" pricing daily in some areas.

If you stay somewhere Metro accessible, rent an ECV or motorized chair if you can. Plenty of people in both ride the Metro daily and while we may grumble about it during rush hour, we're used to seeing them and making room. Just avoid the Metro during rush hour because it's a sea of grumpy humanity anyway. :)

If you get in touch with your members of Congress, they can set up a private tour of the Capitol. Otherwise, you can reserve the regular tour which includes a neat movie that everyone should see once anyway. If they're in session (iffy during the summer) you could also get a Gallery pass and watch some of the pain that happens there.

If your DH is a baseball fan, check out the National's schedule and catch a game. It's a nice stadium. 8th St SW has a couple of places that make a good mojito close to the stadium and one of the bars offers shuttle service.

When we went to DC a few years ago we had my elderly parents on the trip and used a manual wheelchair. One thing we did to make things a bit easier was when we booked a nighttime monuments trolley tour we used a company that provide (free of charge) hotel pick up and drop off. It was nice at the end of the tour we just stayed on the trolley and got a ride back to our hotel in Alexandria VA.

The tour originated from the Old Post Office Pavilion.
