Washington DC must see/do for kids

My kids would like to see Ford's Theater. How far is this from the main attractions? Is it worth it? I tried to get tickets online, but they are sold out for the Washington Monument.
Thanks everyone for all of the advice.

Ford's Theater is also closed at this time for refurb. as well. I have no idea when it will be opened back up again....my DH was laughing saying it's like WDW with our favorite attractions closed! (Amer. Hist. and Ford's Theater!)

Right near the Ford's Theater is The House where Lincoln Died (it's across the street). Ford's Theater was under construction so we did the House-- it only took a few minutes so that is also an alternative as well.

If you are looking this up, it is the "Peterson House" located at 526 10th St.
I just read that Ford's Theater will be closed until sometime in 2009.
It is free and is open daily from 9am to 5pm.
It is literally next to Hard Rock Cafe if anyone is interested.

Also, We finally got to do the International Spy Museum and we thought it was great!

Thanks everyone for all of the help! Are there any fast food places in the area where we can grab some food? I know that there are hot dog carts, etc, but I'm not sure if they'd be safe for my son with food allergies.

Since you'll only be there for 7.5 hours, I would stick to the mall. There is soooo many things to see. We like the Air & Space, Natural History, and the wall. The museums have places to grab a bite and a drink. Bring comfy shoes!

I agree - I would stick to the Mall area. While Arlington, the Spy Museum, the House Where Lincoln died are neat, they're farther away and it would take more time. There's more to see around the Mall than you can do in a day anyway!

There's a McDonald's inside the Air & Space Museum, but be prepared to have sticker shock! The Museum of Natural History had a nice little cafe that we enjoyed, and I think there is another restaurant there as well.
