Lucky me...my washing machine broke, so now I have got to buy a new one right here at Christmas  I went looking today at Sears and Lowe's. I found one at Lowe's that is a Performa, it's made by Maytag for Lowe's stores. Does anyone have one made by this company or know anything about them? I really need to buy one tomorrow..loads of laundry to do :guilty: It has the features I am looking for and is about $75 - $100 less than the other name brands...whirlpool and GE.
Thanks for any advice or comments

Are you sure you need a new one? Mine broke last summer and it turned out to be a $15 part... coupler or something like that. It was easy to install too.

Yes, we have repaired it several times, and it's 14 years old and I use it every day....sometimes 3 -4 a day....it's gone....

Then it is time for a new one! I don't know anything about the Maytag... I picked the washer with the largest capacity when I got mine... I can get twice as much in mine as my mothers.

7 years ago Sears gave me the best deal. I just told them what I was getting offered elsewhere and they suddenly remmebered a free delivery deal and a $5o rebate offer and I think a 10% off deal on top of it... I guess they really wanted the sale!

I base all of my major appliance purchases on what I read in Consumer Reports. I let them do all the research and testing and try to always go with their suggestions.

Maytags have a good reputation and from my experience have been very reliable...... (we have a performa washer at home)

I agree with the other poster who said to get the biggest tub size they make though.... It really can cut down on the loads you are doing.....

Ditto - they did a report on washing machines in Feb 05. Maybe you can find the issue at your library if you don't have it. Here's their site with some info, although you have to be a subscriber to the site to see the actual ratings there:

I am going through the same thing! My washer broke this past Saturday - DH turned it on its side and noticed that there was a PLASTIC gear broken that drives the belt. Repairmen want $100 just to come out and tell us "yep, its broken". Because the washer is 12 years old, we decided to spend the money to buy a new one. Kenmores get good ratings from CR, but ours was a Kenmore and had 21 service calls in 12 years (they never seemed to send anyone who knew what he was doing).

After consulting with Consumer Reports and looking at machines at Sears, Best Buy and Home Depot, we are leaning towards a Whirlpool front loader -- saves water, energy and soap and had a low repair rate. There is a thread on here about Whirlpool front loaders.

Good luck! I feel for you. P.S. I also need a new range, but I have done without for almost a year. I have become quite skilled with the microwave and crockpot.

Does anybody have the GE Harmony set? Anybody know anything about them? The washer is top-loading without an agitator. The dryer is cool - clear glass door - but, really - how often does one sit and watch their clothes dry??? I only do this while on vacation at a laund-o-mat;) Maybe, if I buy this set, I can pretend I'm on vacation while I'm doing laundry - it will be more fun;) Seriously - anybody??

I thought I was sure about the Whirlpool set - but, still on the fence. I did buy a refrigerator, though;o)

My washer has a plastic and rubber joint between the motor and the drum. I have replaced this part numerous times. In fact, I found step by step instructions on the Internet just by doing a Google Search. Has saved me $$$$ over the years and has kept my washer running.

Thank you! I'll let DH know...

I am probably too late, but here is my advice on the Maytag Performa. DON'T DO IT!!!!!
I own one. It is 5 years old. We replaced the pump just 2 years ago. I am now looking at either fixing or replacing it altogether. I went down today to find an inch of water in half of the basement. It fills with water and fills and fills and overfills the tub and never starts agitating.
We have not been happy with this washer at all. I have a few friends and they feel the same way with their Maytags. Too short a life with too many repairs for its age. I know some people will like them and have better luck, but my experiance has not been good at all. I am never going to buy Maytag again.
