...I get it if you have a dishwasher not performing well.

I just don't get it. Otherwise.

Brand new dishwasher, hubby is home for the weekend and the dishes are nearly sparkling when he puts them in. :confused3

My MIL does this too. Why waste the time scrubbing everything? She doesn't believe me that it will come off in the DW.

My husband's dad used to tell him the sink was for washing and the dishwasher was for sterilizing. After we got married, he wanted to do it his dad's way. I told him his dad doesn't live here. Just rinse any visible food off and put it in the dishwasher. He was happy to do it my way when it found out it was quicker, easier and dishes were just as clean!

I always wash my items before putting them in the dishwasher--always have. To me, the dishwasher is to sterilize. Another reason is because, if I don't, they just don't come out very clean. We replaced out dishwasher with a top of the line model last year, too--- but I'm not about to stick plates with dried food, spaghetti sauce, greasy butter, and whatever else you can think of in the dishwasher--- for me, it really makes a difference if I wash them first. By washing I don't mean I use soap on everything---I just make sure there is not food on the items. My DH does this as well---doesn't bother us at all, and I'm sure it's better for the life of the washer.

I always rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. My only personal experience with someone who didn't was one roommate of mine. She didn't notice or didn't care that the gunk that rinsed off the dishes ended up on the inside of our glassware. Ick.

I've never known anyone that actually washed them before putting them in the dishwasher, but I think rinsing is common.

My dishwasher is horrible. I've got a sink of hot soapy water right now soaking the few items that didn't get cleaned.

I also find it's horrible on cleaning tupperware. It usually does a good enough job with pots and glass stuff.

Never pre-wash, I might scrape off solid pieces and throw them down the garbage disposal, but that's it.

I think this is a lot of extra work people make for themselves, but then - I have a Bosch dishwasher and it even takes the tarnish off the bottom of my copper Revere Ware pots, so I'm not worried it won't be able to handle a little dried mac and cheese!!

If I had an older dishwasher model I might scrape and rinse.

I rinse them and get anything solid off of them but I don't go as far as pre-washing everything.

I've always given a quick rinse of any heavy stuff off before placing them in the dishwasher. :thumbsup2
I have had people ask me why I do it though.
Mostly habit..grew up doing that, and likely you don't need to with today's models..but what the heck. Old habits are hard to break.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.....I'm just sayin'

oh I'm not.

It's just why bother getting a new dishwasher if you shall utilize none of the features that prevent the need to wash dishes ahead of time.

I relate to using a wash board to clean your clothes before using the washing machine.

His family is worse though. Soap is involved when they "rinse".

We just got a brand new dishwasher. We had dishes that had been sitting there a few days & the food dried on it. So, just for the heck of it, we washed them just the way they were. Dried food and all.

All the gunk came off. :thumbsup2

I don't wash them first anymore. :goodvibes
