I have always heard that when you replace one you should go ahead and replace pair AND that you should get a "set". As in same line.

Is this true? Opinions?

I have no idea if it's true or not, but I do not at the moment have a "matched set" of washer and dryer. We replaced our dryer several years ago but the washer is still going strong. We didn't feel the need to spend the extra $$ to get a "matched set" when only one was broken beyond repair.

Same with us. :)

Our dryer is 9 years old, but our washer is only 3.

I purchased a set of front loaders last year when my washer died - Best decision I ever made!! It initally cost more but it washes & dries so much faster and uses the tinest amount of detergent that I have to be saving money!! So, if you are going from a regular set to a front loading set - yes you should get a matched set. :laundy: :)

I have the most basic washer and dryer-washer is 14 years old, dryer is 9 years old. Needless to say ,they aren't a matched set, and were not expensive in the least. But they run and work really well! My clothes don't care what they are washed in.

I think that "have to be a matching set" myth was started by my very OCD Aunt who feels that her appliances have to match the walls, and MUST also match each other.

I think manufacturers made that up to get people to buy new items sooner than they need to.

In my experience, I can buy one dryer for every two or three washing machines.

If you are someone who tend to relocate often then I think a matched set makes sense (for some reason, even if the washer and dryer are not staying with the house the matched set "feels" nicer and better maintained which adds to the overall feel of the house). Barring that reason I really cannot see why you shouldn't just replace the item that needs it (says the woman who is replacing just a washer this weekend;))

Mine don't match.... I think the last time they did was back in the late 80's. That was my very first washer and dryer so that's probably why :)

DH and I got a very basic, no frills, washer and dryer, when we bought our house 15 years ago. We had to replace the washer 3 or so years ago, and got a fantastic Fisher-Paykel top loading washer. Since then, I've been willing the dryer to die, so we can get the matching F-P dryer. The darn thing will not die!!!!! Part of it is because the washer is so good, and spins the clothes so well, they are just barely damp when they come out, that the dryer does not have to work all that hard.

I think it would be silly to replace whichever one is working perfectly. I would only replace the one that needs to be replaced and if you feel you MUST get a match, get the same brand.

I think it would just be wasteful to replace both, if only one is broken. Not only is it a waste of money, but it is bad for the environment.

My DSis replaced her perfectly functioning dryer because the washer broke. My DH kept trying to buy it from her. She paid at least $1000. She sold it to a total stranger off of craigslist for $75. It was probably about 8 years old. There was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with it. Some times I think she has her head up her butt!! And yes, she is the first person to complain she has no money and too much credit card debt. Go figure!!

Why? I really don't see any logical reason for it other than the fact that it looks nice.

To be fair, sometimes it makes sense to replace something that is working fine just for the value you get from having a new one, or having one that does something new. For me, though, I don't see any significant technological advances having been made in the realm of clothes dryers recently. :) And surely, I would never rationalize a new purchase like that when I'm strapped for money! As a matter of fact, our policy is that when we do make a "vanity purchase" like that, the good one we're replacing doesn't get sold, but rather gets given away to family or donated to the church. If we can't afford to make a vanity purchase outright, then we don't make one at all! :goodvibes:

why would you replace something that is not worn out just because you are replacing something else? Makes no sense.

No surprise there!:thumbsup2

Ours do not match, but they are the same color!:goodvibes

We bought our first washer and dryer 22 years ago when we got married. Still have the same dryer but we are on our 3rd washing machine since then.

I agree. I think that the only one who would recommend getting a matching set is a salesman! :lmao:

I think it would be quite silly and not too smart, actually. BUT, if someone has THAT much money to just buy a matching set to "have a matching set", then take the old dryer and donate it to someone who needs one.

While washers and dryers have improved in efficency, they haven't improved in life span--they've gone downhill on that.

I couldn't agree with you more.. We are such a "throw away" society it isn't even funny..

Bigger, better, newer, different color - it's a never ending cycle of waste..:sad2:

I think manufacturer's made that up to sell more dryers.

We are on our first dryer (10 years old) and third washer. I'm not about to replace a perfectly good dryer every 3 years because all the washers are junk.

We replaced our washing machine 2 or 3 years ago. The dryer is 13 years old and still functions.

Hubby bought a set for the new house (that match of course) because we intended to keep the other set in our Florida house. But our renters have their own. So not sure what to do with our mismatched set.
