I have no idea if it's true or not, but I do not at the moment have a "matched set" of washer and dryer. We replaced our dryer several years ago but the washer is still going strong. We didn't feel the need to spend the extra $$ to get a "matched set" when only one was broken beyond repair.

I think manufacturers made that up to get people to buy new items sooner than they need to.I have always heard that when you replace one you should go ahead and replace pair AND that you should get a "set". As in same line. Is this true? Opinions?

In my experience, I can buy one dryer for every two or three washing machines.
Why? I really don't see any logical reason for it other than the fact that it looks nice. So, if you are going from a regular set to a front loading set - yes you should get a matched set.
I think it would be silly to replace whichever one is working perfectly.
I think it would just be wasteful to replace both, if only one is broken. Not only is it a waste of money, but it is bad for the environment.
To be fair, sometimes it makes sense to replace something that is working fine just for the value you get from having a new one, or having one that does something new. For me, though, I don't see any significant technological advances having been made in the realm of clothes dryers recently.
My DSis replaced her perfectly functioning dryer because the washer broke. My DH kept trying to buy it from her. She paid at least $1000. She sold it to a total stranger off of craigslist for $75. It was probably about 8 years old. There was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with it. Some times I think she has her head up her butt!! And yes, she is the first person to complain she has no money and too much credit card debt. Go figure!!
And surely, I would never rationalize a new purchase like that when I'm strapped for money! As a matter of fact, our policy is that when we do make a "vanity purchase" like that, the good one we're replacing doesn't get sold, but rather gets given away to family or donated to the church. If we can't afford to make a vanity purchase outright, then we don't make one at all!

why would you replace something that is not worn out just because you are replacing something else? Makes no sense.

I think it would be silly to replace whichever one is working perfectly. I would only replace the one that needs to be replaced and if you feel you MUST get a match, get the same brand.
