Wash first or not?

The instructions on the transfer paper say DO NOT wash the tshirts first. But I see the instructions here (Disign Tips page) say that the shirts MUST be washed first. Which is best? I know when I go to the beach and get iron ons for the girls they (obviously) aren't washed first. What should I do?

One shirt is white, the other 3 shirts are light pink, I've got light transfer paper for all of them.

I just did my first t-shirt and I followed the directions here and it worked great. I did wash them first, it made sense. I wanted them to be pre-shrunk. Hopefully I did the right thing...but they look awesome right now! It really was easy to do. I used the Dark transfer paper though and loved the results!
