Was this Cast Member telling the truth?

The first time I went to the Magic Kingdom I would use my Annual Pass for the discount when purchasing a few items and sometimes my dad would want to pay for them. Well when I was at the Main Street Fire Station store purchasing a shirt the Cast Member had to call someone because he said we couldn't do it like that because I had to pay in order to get the discount or he could be fired. Well we told him that we did that a few times that day and none of the other Cast Members said anything about that. I then showed him my photo ID, although my dad's credit card had the same last name and etc so it was kind of silly. I also asked this question to some of my friends who are Cast Members for WDW and they said this Cast Member was wrong and didn't know what he was doing. Anyway was this Cast Member right or wrong in this situation?

MIL has bought multiple items using my AP discount and her credit card and we have never had a problem. P

This year to keep from having to be there everytime she shops (which is alot) I made her my 2nd user on my Chase Visa for the discount.

Besides we already know that Bus Driver CM's are the only ones to be trusted. ;)

I think according to policy the Cast Member was correct. At least it's the same with Cast Member discounts, the Cast Member is supposed to be the one using the discount and purchasing the item. Now it could be that most Cast Members in merchandise don't even bother checking anymore!

I think there is some language in the passholder jacket that your card comes in that says the benefits are non-transferable. That would be typical anyway. Not saying that CMs haven't been overlooking that for years, but I do think this CM was technically correct.

We bought a couple of things at World of Disney at DTD and showed our AP's to get the discount, the CM's did ask to see ID to make sure the AP and ID matched, but I don't think they asked to see if the credit or debit card we used matched the pass.I think it's a little ridiculous if they actually do check the credit/debit cards.I understand you can't abuse the discount but that's a little too much.

Yes, it is your annual pass and only you get the discount. If another person uses their credit card it technically is showing that you are letting them get your discount which is not transferable. So the cast member was 100% correct!

I like how your title was not was the cast member right but were they telling the truth. I doubt a busy cast member would lie just to waste your time in order to get approval.

If you always travel together to WDW, why don't your father buy an AP also? That would solve the problem...

The CM was right. Ask your dad if he can put you as a secondary user on his account, then you'll have a card on his account, but with your name. Ta Da!

Officially they were correct I believe. Discounts etc are for YOU not for others to use whether or not they buy for you they are still buying.

That's how it works in most retail stores - if you're an employee you get a discount (just like AP), and even if you go in with your parent, you can't buy stuff with your discount and then have them pay. That's abusing the system.

I know it doesn't make much sense from a convience point of view, but it's policy. If someone I know wants something from my job, I technically am only allowed to give it to them as a gift with my discount - money cannot change hands inside the store. And they frown upon even passing off things you just bought to others.

I agree it's a pain, but it's how they prevent shrink.

I didn't know they gave AP discounts on merchandise in the parks anymore. Didn't they discontinue park and resort discounts on merchandise years ago? I was under the impression only World of Disney and a few other places in the village age a discount. More info please.:cool1:

Well, I don't know about the AP, but I worked at MK merchandice during my college program. (2006) I do know that CMs, and Disney affliates using their discount HAD to be the one paying for the item, and they if using credit/debit card, it had to be their card. Say two people came to my register, one was a CM, and one was not, the CM used their discount, and was short 5 bucks, and their friend gave them the 5 bucks, I was supposed to refuse the sale. Being said, there is always going to be CMs who don't know, or don't care about the rules, or just don't feel compfertable saying something. I remember once a CM used her discount, and the lady with her handed me her credit card, and I said, "sorry no can do", and they were so mad. My manager came, and said, "nope sorry". So the CM could be very well telling the truth, and in fact I bet he was telling the truth, and the other CMs were not following procedure.

Just like CMs are supposed to ask for ID if the credit card or KTTW cards are not signed, and if they don't have id, they must refuse the sale. I had many of guest get snotty with me because I asked them for an id when no one else asked them for one. It could all be worked out if every CM followed procedure at all times.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. When I use my CM discount I must be the person who pays; if a credit card is used it must have my name on it. When Judy (late wife) and I had APs it did not really matter since we both had APs and all the credit cards were joint accounts.

The only exception that I know of to this rule concerns use of the Tables In Wonderland discount card, where the holder must be present but anyone can pay the bill.

Were you staying at a Disney's resort? If so then charge it to the room instead of to an ordinary credit card.

Every time I use my AP discount I have to show my pass and a photo ID. I'm sure that technically the CM is right...though most CMs probably would have overlooked it.

Well in our case there were some things we didn't want to charge to our room, plus like I said before my dad's credit card has my last name and etc. So it's not like we were trying to get away with anything. Also since none of the other Cast Members didn't say a word about how we paid and got the discount that's why it was surprising this Cast Member even mentioned anything. Also I will say again while he was on the phone I even showed him my photo ID proving it was my pass and to match our last names.

I have actually had CM's ask for a picture id even though I was paying cash just to make sure I was same as on AP.

Well even though it has the same last name it doesn't make you the same person and it could be construed as trying to get away with something since you were transfering your discount to another person (regardless of the fact it was your dad, same last name and traveling with him).
