Was just told my FL DMV that my daughter will have to get a FL license/new tags while

Doing the Disney college program. She said that if you are working and living there you are required by law to get a new license and also insure your car for FL and get FL tags while there. She is there less than 5 months. Has anyone else been told this????????????????

Sorry...not true. I have confirmed the following with our insurance company, the Indiana DMV and the Florida DMV.

Our daughter works and lives down there. She is using a vehicle that is titled in mine and my husbands name only! We do not wish to have her name on the title since technically it is our car and we wish to keep it in our names only. Our insurance company has the vehicle listed as "away" on our insurance policy.

She did get a Florida Driver's License because she lives there and when we went to the DMV there (I was with her) I asked about the car and explained that it is our car and we are the only ones on the title. They said that was fine, but if we ever decided to add her name, then we would then have transfer everything to Florida.

If your daughter is only there for a few months for the program, they ARE NOT required to change anything...it is the same thing as attending a school out of state. Now, that doesn't mean that a police officer won't stop and say something to them, it happened to my daughter while still on the program, but unless they are staying there permanently, they are not required to change anything for just a few months.

Again, I confirmed this with the Florida DMV in person.

This is good to know. I really didn't think it would affect her since she is there for less than 6 months. It was was a young girl on the phone at DMV. Our names are on the title too. I am relieved now!!!

If she gets pulled over, they will ask if that's her current address... have her know that she should state that's her permanent address, but she is currently living in Florida on a Temporary Student Internship.

Half way through my program I made FL my permanent address... at that point I switched everything over. A big reason for that was the fact that it was a presidential election year and I wanted to vote.

That same holds true for the car.

The potential problem is related to insurance. There's always a risk that an insurance company will not cover accidents out of state, especially if the person is actually living out of state (versus a vacation). That depends on your coverage and relationship with your company.

Our insurance USAA has no issues with her car being there. They just wanted me to check with the DMV about their state laws. Thanks

Completely false. In order to have your car on the CP, the insurance does have to be in her name, but she doesn't have to change her license/plates/etc. The CP is just like going to college out of state, as long as it's just a temporary thing, you don't need to change everything over.

If it does become permanent, then you do have to change everything over. If you have a FL license, you need to have FL plates or else you can get a ticket.

But shhhhh, I've lived down here permanently for a year now and still have my NJ license/plates. It's just too expensive to change over, haha.

Be careful, you can get arrested for not changing your license from NJ to Fl!!

Under Fl law, a motor vehicle is required by law to be registered within 10 days of owner becoming employed, placing children in a public school or establishing residency. The same is with obtaining a Fl driver's license.

There are people arrested in my county every week for failing to do this and it's in our local paper.

For those under the disney program or going to a college in Fl, these laws do not apply.

I was warned my first week about this by my manager. She was pulled over when she first started with Disney and was fined heavily for having everything from California still.

I spent my PI with CA plates, registration, and insurance. My insurance does know I am in FL under an internship program because I was hit my second day here (by the company moving my car no less). They had no issue with me being here until I become a permanent resident.

Due to the knowledge that your fines can go way up if you are caught with out of state license plates and living here, I was extremely careful with driving and have yet to be pulled over for anything.
