Was able to Upgrade at Port!!!

I did a search and wanted to tack this info onto any threads I could find, but the news boards are being difficult.

We sailed on the 11/27, Eastern Magic recently (we had booked about 11 months out). We were assigned room 2620 (category 9). At the port we asked about upgrades (we were about the 5th family in line). The gentleman told me there were "lots of 'em today." He instructed us to go down to the very end CM and she would help us. Friends that were traveling with us were done signing in before us and went down to inquire about adjoining staterooms. Boy, did we ever have tons of choices! We both ended up upgrading to a Category 5 (rooms 7596 & 7594) for $350! We inquired about other categories...$750 for a category 4 (way too much, if you ask me, just for a little bit more room). There was a category 3 left, but I didn't want to be tempted and we wanted to be near our friends, so I didn't ask what the upcharge would be. I wish I would have asked just for reference, but glad I didn't have to sadly turn it down.

We upgraded at the port for our second Magic cruise in 2003. We had two cat. 11 staterooms. We upgraded one of them to a cat 6. (of course we wanted to make sure we were not too far from the second cabin). It was a little under $700.

We wanted to upgrade our Cat 9 cabins at the port for our January wonder cruise....and I just happened to check our ressie online and saw that we were complimentary upgraded from two Cat 9 cabins to two Cat 6 veranda cabins...and they even kept us next to each other!!!

You were lucky at the port as they don't often have cabins available to upgrade, even for a fee!!

That's great that you were able to upgrade. We successfully upgraded for under $200 last December on a 4-day from an 11 to an 8. It was well worth it!

4, DH & I and DSs 15 & 11, but it was the same price for my friend who only had herself and two DSs along (same ages)

The "WHY" is because the lower category rooms (8-12) sell quicker than the uppper category rooms (4-7). As the cruise gets closer to sailing dates and there are some upper category rooms available and the lower category rooms are mostly sold out, DCL will give complementry upgrades to some of the folks in the lower cats. to free up less expensive room inventory in hopes of selling the rooms last minute (and usually at a much higher price than if you book a year early).

The fixed costs of sailing the ship (fuel, crew, food, port charges) don't change with the number of rooms sold, so DCL wants as many rooms occupied as possible.

NOPE. If you upgrade then you will pay the prevailing rate per person for the upgrade. It's much cheeper at the port - but you take the risk of nothing being available - and that's usually the case.
