Warning tiffins

I'm not big on food that looks back at me but I did try the whole fish (in my attempt to order each item on their menu). It was quite good. If I can handle it most anyone can.
Though I admit, the scallops are my favorite. Only the Wagu comes close to being as good as they were.

Funny thing, the one thing neither DH nor I have ordered in all our meals at Tiffin's is the item OP ordered. It's been on my list try try but they changed things in April so our list changed up. Maybe I'll have to try it next time, see how the portion comes out.

I had the chermoula rubbed chicken in December. I thought the portions were fine. It was about the same amount of chicken you would see in a typical chicken breast at a restaurant. I think the new chicken is a little different though, because mine came with cous cous.

I, um, agree that the fish is large, but, um...

Okay, no offense intended to anyone who likes it, but if I was served a fish that way I'd run screaming from the restaurant. I have fish at home that look at me, I don't need them doing it when I go out. Eek!
Oh, then, you probably wouldn't appreciate the waitress telling you about eating the eyeballs and tail like our waitress did lol. Have to admit, that may have been tmi even for me who grew up on the southern summer fish fry.

You don't say where 'home' is, but America is a big place & food culture is not uniform in the different regions of the USA, let alone all the other countries in N. and S. America. There are a number of restaurants I've dined at in the SF/Monterey region of California where the plate pictured by OP would be considered normal.
That said, I'm not a fan of the high end restaurant trend of the sides being decorative rather than substantive. I'd rather skip the all carb empty calories of the bread and have an adequite protein and healthier veg side. I rarely eat the empty desert calories.
We're trying Tiffins for the first time this Dec., thanks for the warning OP, I'll definitely avoid that entree.
I live in the midwest, but yes,it's very common to go to a restaurant and be served a portion that's probably 1500 calories....a woman my size doesn't need much more than that for an entire day. But hence the reason I do a lot of my home cooking out of Cooking Light mag...helps me figure out what a healthy portion ought to be. :).

This thread did not need to become so rude to make the point that at fine dining establishments, portions tend to be smaller and prices higher (not always the case though and the OP already knew that). To defend a restaurant or fine dining portions, does not mean you have to shame a poster who thought the portions he and his wife got were inadequate by exclaiming essentially, "How much do you need to eat?" Just not necessary to make your point.

I'm a small person (5'2, 110 pounds) who is quite used to fine dining and think what the OP had looks smaller than average, especially in the face of the exact SAME meal being pictured later in the thread and in that picture it looks bigger. Hard to argue with that.

Do they offer to filet the whole fish for you table side? That is how I have had it in the past. Love whole fish. Just too much work it I need to do it :)

They did not offer. I didn't ask so I'm not sure if it's available or not.

That's how I feel-kinda like crawfish boils here at home. Everyone gets all excited for crawfish season but for me it's just too much effort for too little reward.

The second picture was mine and I will say that it is hard to tell since OP photographed the plate from the opposite side. I turned my dish to make sure I got the "meaty" side of the chicken. It was the breast side so one view has the meat and the other view has the skin coming down at an angle. It was a bad picture and a good picture. While I am not saying the OP is wrong and he got a normal portion .... I'm saying we just can't tell because of the side of the dish he photographed. It's a new dish I guess because I am having problems finding more pictures of it online.

I will say that the food was flavorful and pretty and a decent portion .... but the overall experience was not worth the price we paid (and I had 20% off). I don't see us returning here, but will surely sit in Nomad's and order appetizers.

If it is work, count me out. My rules are (1) order something the kitchen worked hard at (2) order something I don't have to work hard at.

No, they did not offer to filet my fish like they do with the whole baked market fish at Kouzzina. This fried presentation really does not lend itself to that kind of table-side service. Tiffins did include a traditional wide blade butter knife to my place setting for super easy removal of the meat. The fish stands up so all you have to do is slide your knife down the sides. The meat practically falls off by itself. This was a nice touch as I had the exact same fish earlier in the week at Skipper Canteen and they did not offer the extra utensil nor did they last September when I ordered the whole fried fish there.

For some reason it did not click that it was fried! Omg it sounds yummy. May actually be worth the extra effort :)

They also provided a set of chopsticks so that was a fun twist compared to the Skipper Canteen experience also.

The tail wouldn't phase me, because in my childhood we ate fresh caught and fried bluegill with all the fins on. They were delicious and crunchy fun. Since bluegill is so small, we just picked them up and ate them like a piece of fried chicken. With way more bones, of course!

And I've seen fish served whole before. That doesn't actually bother me that much. It was the being served upright and looking like a fish in my aquarium that I found freaky. Also, for some reason the fried coating made it look like some monster fish from the deeps, like those fish with the lights on their heads. I'm sure it is much more appetizing in person.

You made me chuckle. Yeah, it makes an impression on the plate. The couple seated next to us, who were so close I could have probably rested my elbows on their table (maybe an exaggeration), slightly lost their composure when they saw the fish being served to me.

I don't order fish often, so I am very inexperienced with eating it, especially whole, but as the quoted poster said it took almost no additional effort on my part, and it was delicious.

The portion is adequate for a normal adult.

Too many people have a misconception of what an appropriate portion size is. "Food piled on a plate" - no thanks.
Since you are quoting my post, I would like to say that I myself do not feel "food piled on a plate" is the standard guideline that is recommended by the American Heart Association or any other organizations that give dietary suggestions. I simply think it is not our place to tell each other what are "appropriate" servings to satisfy THEM while they dine in WDW. THAT is a personal preference. Maybe arguing portion size is appropriate if this was a thread about dining at the Biggest Loser camp, but not at a place where most people say the dining is 50% of their vacation. What I am saying is that I think OP was warning those who may have hoped for or expected heaping servings. Signature dining alone isn't enough information to assume quantity would be low since quality is high because I have had food hanging over my plate edge at Yachtmans, Le Cellier, and Flying Fish.

We went to Tiffins for lunch before our Pandora preview. My DS had been before and loved it, but this time he was with me that it would likely be our last. One, he had previously had the Taste of Tiffins but it was not offered this time. The prices are high, and since we knew we would eat a later dinner in Pandora we opted to order 2 dishes for 4 of us (all adults). It also came with a plate of bread, which they offered more.

I felt like the portions were plenty of food for one person ......... but I don't think it was worth the price. Pretty and lots of flavors in your mouth but I still didn't feel like it had the value. The decor was nice but I like Nomad Lounge better. Since the Lounge offers an array of appetizers I think we will stick with the better atmosphere and value.

Here are our two meals and bread.

Even in this pic, which looks way bigger than ops, the chicken dish looks like the smaller entree...it looks like the entire course would fit on the white bread plate behind it since about 3/4 of the plate is virtually empty, unlike the 2nd entree which at least filled 2/3 of the plate...

ah I love these threads where you have the "gluttons" on one side and the "americans are too fat and eat too much" on the other side.

Remember, this is a Disney board which means it's about people's vacation behavior.... a vacation in which most americans with sedentary white collar jobs that can afford the high prices at disney are getting a whole lot more exercise than they normally do... but also a time when they might indulge and may not be reflecting every day life. Also remember that what you weigh is not always related to how much you eat... sometimes the people who eat the most are the healthiest, sometimes they are skinny and not necessarily healthy and people can be very overweight without being gluttons all the time. We are all different and the OP posted about their experience, with their opinion and supporting photographic evidence to help others who might run into the same thing. If you think it is a fine portion, keep going to Tiffins. If you think the portions are too small, go somewhere else where the portions are larger or it is AYCTE. The information is great for people who are planning their trip, which is the point of this board.

If you think this is an appropriate place to be on your high horse about how little you eat and how people who don't eat the way you do have something wrong with them, you should really find a different hobby.

popcorn:: does this popcorn make my american butt look fat?
