Just got home Thursday night from our trip. Had gotten a great rate for a car rental through Alamo, the Official car rental comany for Disney.

Went to pick up Sat 8/28 at 2:30pm when our flight arrived. Very disappointed to arrive at Alamo counter to find a HUGE line of people snaking all the way through the ropes and almost back to the elevators! Have NEVER encountered anything like that before, including when we rented from Alamo previously when it was off site, or when renting from several of the other agencies on site. Many people were on cell phones calling the other rental agencies or just leaving the lines to go to the other agencies (who had no or very small lines) to pay the higher prices. Children were very restless.

DH stood in line while I visited the other counters to see if they would match our quoted price from Alamo (the rumor being circulated by MCO porters). None would, and we would have had to pay another $100 or so so we chose to wait. In the time it took to visit all these counters DH had made his way toward the front of the line. But it took an hour and 15 minutes out of our afternoon and it was quite maddening. I asked a woman who worked in one of the agencies for future reference if Alamo was always like that and she answered "Every day". Thought maybe because it was a Sat afternoon it was particularly busy but not sure - like I said, other counters were ok. Also when we went to the garage to pick up the car all the full size cars were gone so we had to go over to National (their sister company) to get our car.

Return was easy since we dropped off in the garage and had no lines to wait in.

Thought people may want to take this into consideration when renting a car. Myself - won't chance it again, it messed up our one night stay before our cruise, remainder of evening felt rushed since we were off schedule quite a bit as well as a little cranky!! Was also supposed to meet someone at 4pm so that was in the back of my mind too.

P.S. Glad I kept my internet confirmation with me where the second driver fee was included - of course it wouldn't come up that way in the computer at the counter (adding an additional 15 minutes to our wait). I have no doubt had I not had the paperwork I would have had to pay the $7/day charge. Also, for the first time we elected to pay the price for their gas (only $1.89/Gal) and that turned out to be a good decision in light of the storm - we left Thurs night instead of Sunday morning and just barely made our flight.

If Alamo is going to service a large portion of Disney's guests, they ought to have a larger counter with more people on duty (they had about 8 on - 5 Alamo with 3 National helping out). Thier off site agency was larger and even though there were a lot of people there last time we rented from them, they moved us right along.

One more thing, I did encounter some high pressure to buy the additional insurance and got a nasty quip when I declined. Maybe I was lucky before but had never had that happen either.

What a bummer!!! I was under the impression that National and Alamo share cars and don't have distinct areas. Am I mistaken?

They may share cars BUT it sounds like OP was waiting in line in the terminal to be given the chance to buy the extra coverages. Alamo and National still have separate desks. Many of us use the "quick rent" programs and wouldn't have to wait on that line.

The worst car rental company out there. No customer service!!! A bunch a crooks over charging tourists. The few employees they have have absolutely the worst attitudes I have ever seen. Never again will I be ripped off by these guys. Thank you Discover card for getting my money back from the crooks at Alamo.

I was there Saturday 8/28 and waited in line over one hour and 30 minutes. The woman said that they had installed new computer programs the day before and no one knew how to run them except the manager. I had to work very hard to get my origional rate on my internet sheet. The woman harassed me about insurance which I declined and was insistant that I prepay for gas which I also didn't do. I'm also a Quick Silver member but it didn't do any good, either. I actually felt bad for the poor woman who waited on me. She was angry and frustrated with the new computers and felt incapable of doing the job she's done for the past three years!!! She needed some Ativan!!! I had an awsome rate from a BJ's coupon which was eventually honored. My only problem was finding a gas station in Orlando with gas when I returned the car on Thursday.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I'm holding reservations with both Dollar and Alamo for our trip starting September 28. The Alamo rental is $40 less than Dollar, but I may just cancel the Alamo reservation based on your comments. It's just not worth the hassle.

I haven't rented from Alamo for nearly 20 years when it was included in a package we purchased on one of our first trips to WDW. It was a major hassle working with them then, I guess not much has changed.

We had a horrendous wait at the ALAMO counter once at MCO and it cured us from EVER returning to use them again.

There are distinct areas but they seem to merge together pretty seamlessly. Signs in garage say Alamo or National - separate but right next to eachother. Checking out our car from National through Alamo booth not a problem, nor on return.

The woman said that they had installed new computer programs the day before and no one knew how to run them except the manager.

Ah yes, the computer problems. They did say that too and I'm sure it was in fact a problem for them. I wondered, though, if that was the ONLY issue since the woman I asked said it was like that every day (though she did work for the competition).

I had gotten my great rate and coupon for a free day through the Disney Visa. Maybe I'll call them and let them know my experience with the long lines and rude salespeople.

This makes me happy that my friend called Alamo and had the rate fixed before we get there. I was almost double when they installed their new computer system. A few minutes on the phone by my friend obviously will save us quite a bit of time at the QS counter.

Linda,
Thanks for the info. I simply never noticed a distinction between the two and did wonder if I was, again, missing something. :)

I'm sorry Pea-n-me that you had to start your vacation off like this...:(

like I always say....there IS a reason you good such good rates at Alamo.....I learned the hard way years ago..

We had the same problem arriving at Orlando last week. The Alamo line was at least an hour wait and all the other rental counters had no line whatsoever.

While my husband stood on the Alamo line, in frustration I went over to National and asked if any cars were available. The price was way too high and when I told the attendant that hubby was waiting on the Alamo line he said 'Oh, I can take care of you right here.' :earseek: He pulled up all our reservation info right there and we were out in five minutes. We were so grateful we felt compelled to tip the guy. I don't know if that's standard procedure, and if it was, why National wasn't taking customers off the Alamo line, but whatever the case, it is a good option for future Alamo line sufferers. Pricewise Alamo couldn't be beat, and car pickup and dropoff was very convenient.

You were probably lucky. When I went over to National the rate was also very high. The man at the counter said he could help me with my Alamo reservation (to my surprise) but only if I was in the front of the Alamo line - I couldn't bypass the whole line. I guess it can't hurt to ask but if they did that routinely they risk having an angry mob on their hands!! :scared:

It certainly was sheer dumb luck on my part. While the National agent was helping us, I noticed the adjacent National agent waving over the next person from the Alamo line. Maybe my agent had just showed up as I entered the empty National queue. I wondered what standard procedure was; it was quite confusing. Anyway, he didn't seem surprised at all by the tip.

I haven't used ALamo in years because they spend so much time pushing the extra rip-off insurance and car upgrades. The reason the line is so long is that they concentrate on pushing these extras rather than getting people to the cars and out of there. I do use National but usually bypass the Counter(EA). Even though national and Alamo are joined, I still think National is a good company, but I will not consider Alamo no matter how low the rate is. I pity anyone who unknowingly uses Alamo.

then added.....

I'm also a Quick Silver member but it didn't do any good, either

wonder if belonging to Quick Silver is not as beneficial as it was previously, or did jaynerita make a mistake by standing in the regular line when they might have gone to the garage as some have posted previously on this forum if you are a Quicksilver member

Quick silver membership will not be as easy to acquire now since you have to have a coporate connection or rent at least 5 times

Anyone really know what Quicksilver members do at Orlando?

The fact that Quick Silver didn't help may have been my fault. There was a Quick Silver area but I didn't even see it until I was second in line. It was up the front of the line in small print. At that point I didn't even bother for fear that they would not honor my reservation with a coupon.

Last April my husband waited in the Alamo line for over an hour on a Sat. afternoon. We had gotten Alamo with our package and this was before I knew about the DIS or Mousesavers. It really chewed up a huge amount of our arrival day. When we got to the garage, there were no intermediates left, so we took a Malibu from National's EA.

Ah yes, the computer problems.

That's it, the computer makes them push the insurance and gas program.

I used Alamo once. maaaany years ago. I see they are still up to their old tricks.

And now they own National.

I love Hertz!!!
