I just remembered this as its that time of the year when My daughter who, at the time, was living up in our third floor apartment with her hubby and kids.....well she was cooking chicken chimminchungas....so she had a t fal pot on the stove with a wee bit of oil in it to cook them......when the pot got hot, flames started up the side..she put the top on them and her hubby took them to the side board across the kitchen ........the flames and grease ignited and went up the side of the pot and caught the curtains on fire and also her DH....the kids came running down to us on the first floor (and the rotti too) screaming to call 911 .....my husband ran up the stairs with extinquisher and the fire was out but not before the damage was done....and dds hubby was burnt pretty good on his hands arms and back and neck......in his hair too.....
SO MORAL of story is .....t fal is nonstick and the grease can rush up the sides of it before you know it......this was only an inch or so of oil.
So be careful everyone

Good reminder Pumba! How scary that must have been for everyone! :earseek: I hope your SIL was able to fully recover.

GREAT reminder! I have both non-stick & regular pans & try to remember which one Im grabbign for what!

I hope your SIL heals quickly, and thanks for the warning. I never heard that before.

it would be for any non stick pots taht you are frying in...
she had a six quart pot with an inch or so of oil......it was unbelievable......took them a few years to cook anything with oil again....

Just to add in to any bird owners out there, be careful with teflon coated pans. If overheated (with nothing cooking in them), it's fatal to bird's respiratory systems..

In regards to the mention of it being bad for birds...

I went to a class about Bird Health being taught by a Vet. Basically, if it is bad for a bird - it can also be bad for humans, maybe at lower levels but bad. I got rid of all but one non stick pan and I only use that one occasionally.
