Wanyama Safari w/ Jiko

The menu we were served on May 27th, which was family style, started with Taste of Africa bread selection. Appetizers included: Savanna rolls, barbecue chicken flatbread, and Tibs Watt. Entrees included Filet Mignon with macaroni and cheese, Chermoula Tanglewood Chicken with goat cheese potatoes, and Maize-crusted Halibut with vegetables of the moment. Everyone got their own dessert sampler which included Lemon-White chocolate mousse, flourless chocolate cake, and pistachio creme brulee. The cost of $170/person includes safari, dinner, tip, tax and they also make a contribution to the Wildlife Conservation fund. Hope this helps :thumbsup2

All 3 courses were served family style-3 different entrees. The problem can come in if everyone likes the same thing!

For $170 per person, I would imagine that they'd gladly bring out more if everyone didn't have the opportunity to sample the dishes!

To those who have done it, is the above assertion true? Because of the 6 listed entrees below I would only be able to eat 1, so, it wouldn't really work for me to sample things.

I think when we did it there was a shrimp dish, a chicken dish, and maybe a beef dish? I have lots of food allergies, and by picking and choosing what I ate, I was fine. I did ask ahead though about the specific things I am sensitive to. FOr sure they don't serve "fist" :)

Diane -- how did you deal with the other people at your table and cross-contamination? Were you able to get all of the dishes first and take large portions, or, did you end up only eating a small amount overall? Given that the listed memories seem to give me a very few options and that even people who know me well have trouble understanding the concept of cross-contamination, I'm worried about the family-style aspect of this meal.

But, the safari part sounds fun.

We did the safari last week on June 3, and everything was exactly as described above. There were 11 people on our safari, and all were adults. The food at Jiko was fantastic, and the family-style servings were more than enough for all of us. The safari was an incredible experience, especially since some of the animals came right up next to the truck. It was raining a little when we went, and that seemed to give the animals a little extra energy. Our guide knew every animal by name, and she pointed out her favorites while giving us information on the animal and telling us stories about her experiences with the animals. Everyone should try to do this safari at least once, and it is an unforgettable experience. We met in front of Jiko and were given a bottle of water for the safari. Since it was raining, we also were given a Disney poncho that we could keep afterwards. DH grumbled to me a little about the price, but when he realized some of the money goes to the Wildlife Conservation fund, he agreed it was worth every penny.

For those worried about food allergies, you should contact AKL ahead of time with the allergy information. It is likely that they will provide you with your own food, maybe even send a chef out to make sure something is prepared safely for you.

Sorry if I'm a little late posting in here! What time does this tour usually start? I was thinking of doing this after roaming around AK, but I'm afraid I'll miss out on a couple attractions if this starts too early! :guilty:

I think when we did it we had to be down there around 4 and they started about 4:30.

When we did the safari a few weeks ago, we had to be there at 3:45, and it started about 4:00.
That's how I remember it too. Then the Safari portion got done around 5:30, that's when we went in for dinner and I think dinner took us slightly over 2 hours.

This is the same menu we were served on May 10. One of the safari guests at our table was vegetarian, and the chef prepared several dishes for her to eat. I'm sure if you give AKL more notice they will accomodate any food allergies.

PS The goat cheese potatoes were to die for!

This is good to hear.

I know that WDW is generally good with allergies -- that's one of the reasons why we love it -- it's just that I've had some trouble with options at Jiko in the past. I love Boma and Sanaa, and, my DW loves Jiko, but, I've had some difficulty getting my needs understood at Jiko and thus have had a couple of disappointing meals there. So, I'd hate to pay SO MUCH money and then have a bad meal.
