Wanting to add on points...really bad.

I got rid of my addonitis last month. Bought another 120 points at BCV and presented them to my wife on our anniversary :)

if you need a 2bedroom then no 360pts isn't odd. We've got 578pts now and it simply isn't enough! LOL The 2wk trip we are taking next May will be 583pts as long as we are able to get the room we want. (2bedroom @ BCV) I had to juggle our other reservations/room types around to free up enough points and then we will have a grand total of 18pts left until our 2012 UY!

I see adding on more points shortly after that trip. ;) Our goal is to work our way up to at least 1000pts though.

Personally, I think you should go into borrow-debt first, then add-on if you need more points for a desired trip. In other words, buy the points when you actually need to use them.

Could you borrow points from next year to meet your needs? Then you wouldn't need to buy points until your next trip.

That is very good advise. Hopefully I can control myself popcorn::. We have a trip in Oct and are already looking at 2 weeks next year which we would need to borrow giving us only 19 points left for 2012. If I can save my money I would easily be able to add 100 points then; paying cash.:teacher:

How Romantic!
I would love to gift points to my DH, but we have a strict policy of no purchases without the other's knowledge exceeding a certain $ amount! Maybe some day, when all of our financial goals are met, I will be brave enough to buy a contract to surprise him!:rolleyes1

When we first bought in 2002 we started with 300 OKW points and then a year later SSR came about and we bought there and added on a few months later to make 220 SSR points. It has been several years since our last add on and I was really close to buying @ VGC but hubby talked me out of that purchase. However with the new Aulani resort Hubby finally went for our 4th DVC contract. We are now up to 645 points and "think" this was our last add on:laughing:

Something snapped in my brain and I'm considering adding 200 pts. to our current 160 BLT points. This would allow us to stay in a 2 BR BLT during peak season every year. We just became DVC owners last month. Please tell me I'm not crazy. Please tell me 360 pts is "normal".

And, if you've done other things, aside from WDW trips, with your membership, what did you do? How was it?

Thanks!

What he said. I ran the math on our 200 points because I wanted to start staying in 2brs instead of 1brs and established that I could do so by borrowing for the next five trips and wouldn't need more points until 2015. By then, things may have changed for our family so I am holding out and putting the cash in savings. (Mind you, we stay in low season so the points go a lot further.)

Also, I would recommend adding a little at a time (buying 50 or so at a time, whatever gets the incentive at the time/you can find on the resale market). Smaller contracts are easier to sell resale and are easier to swallow financially in the short term.

I agree with these posters and also with waiting until you have taken at least one trip to make your decision. An impulse that turns out to be a mistake will cost you more money than you may think.

In addition, my advice is to "pretend" you added on and begin saving the amount of the dues (& monthly finance amount if you go that route). See how it effects your budget and if you can keep it up without "borrowing" back the money. The advantage of this is obviously that you will know for sure you can swing the extra monthly costs and when you decide, you will either have a nice amount to add to your down payment or a nice amount to put towards another financial goal.

Good luck!

We have not added on since 2000, although I think about it once or twice or more per year! We bought 200 pts in 1999 then added on 100 pts 2X in 2000. We have 197 pts in the 2011 use year that I am trying to hang onto so we won't have to borrow tons of points for a big family trip next year. But I don't that we will hang onto them! I would rather be in borrow debt than to pay to stay at the All Stars! My plan is to add on next year once we are 100% debt free with eveything else. I can't give you advice to not add on as a new owner as you can see that we did that ourselves!
