Most people suggest that when you start out, you buy (or trade for) pins you like. You may also want to think about on what to focus....Characters, attractions, films, events, holidays, etc.
For trading purposes, people usually keep their pins in a book or pin bag. You can make a book yourself, very inexpensively with a big binder and plastic pocket holders (like the type meant for coins or baseball cards), or thick foam pages. Pin bags, in different sizes, are available at the parks, through the online Disney catalog, and through lots of other websites.
Learning which pins are hard to find (and hard to trade for), comes with time and observation.
