Because he is terrible. I would actually be okay with George Lucas going back and replacing him with Duffy in every "Episode I" scene he's in.

More Forcetastic encouragement for the Machete order (IV, V, II, III, VI) It would be cool as well if you could sneak in an edited version of epI after epV. If your family ever plans to see the animated series "Clone Wars," some of the characters in Ep1 make appearances, and it's helpful to know why it's a big deal they're in the storyline. (I very enthusiastically encourage watching the animated "Rebels" after seeing Ep II-IV. The music, framing and plots are all reminiscent of EpIV, there's a hefty homage to Spielberg at the start of Season II. Overall, very nicely done and quite entertaining series!)

Another aspect of the Machete order I've heard is that it's reflective of Luke's journey,* where you begin with Luke on Tatooine and "live" through his experiences in Ep IV. After hearing some disturbing information at the very end of EpV, you go back in time to EpII and EpIII as an awakening dream or flashback. You then conclude the flashback of EpII&III with the end of Luke's story in EpVI. Of course, in December the story continues.... "It was true. The dark side... the Jedi... all of it."

The other personal reason that I prefer the machete order is the storytelling in EpIV is far more concise and intriguing. The actors are allowed freedom to be incredible, even more so in the incredibly well-directed EpV. The overall directing of EpI-III take oscar caliber actors and limits them to nearly wooden performances.

Sure, it's always okay to watch in whatever order you wish, however I don't know that I would have gotten "hooked" after watching the slow pacing and overly-directed tediousness of EpI. I likely would have thought of it like Pacific Rim: cool story, neat monsters, interesting effects, but I don't need to see a sequel, much less 5 more sequels of that movie.

*I've also heard that Star Wars is really about Anakin's journey, and I wouldn't doubt that either. It's possible that Anakin's journey is being told through Luke's life story.... ahhh the geekery!

I think the first two you should watch are 4 followed by 5. After that it is less important but I prefer the original 3 followed by the prequels in order...even suffering through Episode 1 if you have never seen it.

Okay, I am totally confused now. Is Episode 1, the first Star Wars movie that came out in 1977? I am going to stay with Bad Pink Tink's guideline as she is the only to spell out by name each movie title...because a Star Wars novice like myself doesn't know what number is exactly which movie. That's why it's easier to use the short-hand #title rather than say the 1st star wars movie, because it's hard to know which 1st...2nd... so on someone is referring. Here's a handy list for you in case your search browser gets broken, or (more importantly) you don't want to search and read plot spoilers...
Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (originally titled "Revenge of the Jedi," but it didn't make sense for Jedi to want revenge.... mentioning it just in case you get a snarky person with regards to the title. 1983)
Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (See... now revenge makes much more sense here. 2005)
Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

I'm not as good with SW trivia as many of my colleagues, so please feel welcome to correct anything. I don't have toes.... I have space-plastic armour. hehehe.



[EDIT: I added the dates of the original theatrical release, and you will find many many other dates for these movies because of all the special-versions that Lucas put out afterwards... for SW newbies, I don't necessarily see the value of telling you which version of Episode V to see, though I admit many of my friends would. Just throwing this out there - listen to the radio dramas, then rewatch the movies.

Theres so much that didn't make it into the movies. I haven't decided on an order to watch the movies in yet, but the radio dramas are fantastic.

I strongly encourage the Machete Order. It actually makes Episode II and III fit very well into the story.

Release order won't hurt, but in terms of the overall story I think going IV, V, II, III, VI makes the entire series even more compelling.

I enjoyed Star Wars as a kid, (I'm 50 now) but I can only remember seeing the first two original movies. Pete once mentioned a specific order in which the movies should be watched for maximum understanding. I would like to take the time to watch them over the next few months before the new Star Wars hits the theaters.

Can anyone recommend a good order in which to watch the movies

My son and I just did a Star Wars marathon last weekend getting ready for the next one to come out.

We watched Episodes VI, V and VI first then Episodes I, II, III.

I got tickets for the 7 movie marathon and wish they were doing Machete order. Think it's going to be chronological, which for a Star Wars vet doesn't ruin the surprise and provides a nice nap time if needed in the wee hours of the morning.

I have the feeling that the first 2 hrs of those marathons are gonna be 1/2 empty theaters.
