Want to cancel my home phone, but need reassurance please!

We canceled our land line about 2 years ago....we don't miss it! If you want more comfort, check out how many minutes you spend per month on your land line. If your like us you will find that your only using it a very small amount and paying a ton per minute.

we haven't had a landline in 18months and have not missed it ONCE...go ahead and cancel it ;)

I currently have a home phone through Time Warner Cable & a cell phone through AT&T. I'm thinking about canceling my home phone to save money. I have a decently-priced cell plan with plenty of minutes available. My cellular reception at home isn't great, but it's good enough to make & receive short phone calls (<15 minutes each). Since I don't spend hours taking on the phone like I did when I was a teenager, that should be fine. I know it's a generational thing, but the thought of not having a home phone is just so strange. I need some encouragement from my Budget Board friends.

Thanks,
Shelli

Cancel and don't look back. we cancelled ours three years ago since we all have cell phones. Haven't missed it at all.

I can't do it. People call us at home and I feel better knowing we have that option. The thing I don't like about people cutting the land line is it has been a struggle at times getting a hold of people that are no longer in the phone book, such as DD's friends' parents or people I need to call in my line of work at a law office.

We haven't had a landline for about three years. Don't miss it at all. We have a Family Plan with our cell carrier and we have a cell phone that we leave in the house as our designated "house phone".

My experience has been just the opposite. I have home phone through my cable company and only pay $29/month. When I was just using my cell phone it was well over $100 :scared1:. With my home phone it's unlimited and I have all the good stuff like call waiting, call forwarding and a neat feature that let's me have caller ID pop up on my tv. I can call and talk to all my friends for as long as *I* want, but since most of them have cell phones they have to watch their minutes. I now use my cell for emergencies only and am still paying less than half of what I was paying before.

I cancelled our home phone a year ago. I went back and forth for years. I was so worried I would regret it and as silly as this sounds, I was attached t our phone number. It is our original number from when we first got married. I wish I had cancelled it a long time ago cause I could have saved more money. I have not regretted it one time.

We cancelled our home phone in July, we haven't regretted it since. :)

Here's a trick my hubby just figured out if you want to keep your home phone number. We have Nettalk voice over IP then we ported our home number to ATT go cell ($15, we had a spare cell phone). Once the home number was "cell number" we were then able to port it to google voice. Being Google voice we could then point the number anywhere we want. So, total cost for a year from here forward is $30. It cost out of pocket prior $50.

We haven't had a landline in over 2 years. We don't miss it at all, but we do have great cell service. That would be my one concern for you would be that you said you don't have great cell service and can usually only make calls that last for 15 minutes...

We cancelled ours about two yrs ago after having the same number for 30 yrs, felt kinda sad at first, but hey no more listening to that dang Beep Beep on the answering machine is a plus, you will get use to not having it.

Went to cell phones about 2 years ago, but DH couldn't stand it. So we got a magic jack. Neither of us knows the number and I have never used it. We will not be renewing it this year! But if you feel better knowing you have a home phone, then I would do the magic jack and use your cell as your primary phone.

We've considered doing the same... be brave, you go first :lmao:

I didn't have a landline from about 97 to 2008, then the house we moved into was on the side of a volcano near a stream, and it just so happens the placement of the property means we get terrible reception so we had to get one again, but it was very reasonable since the 'package' meant our internet bill was reduced. When we leave this house in 22 months I won't get a landline again. No reason to, an extra cell on the plan to leave at your house is much cheaper.
Btw, you can take your landline phone number with you to your cell if you like ...

My "basic" home line was 60.00 a month. I cancelled it over 2 years ago and have NO regrets. My only hesitation at the time was that if my children were home with a baby sitter and there was an emergency (keep in mind I never leave them alone LOL) ... I decided to add them each to my cell coverage (20.00 for both of them)--- so, we share the minimum on a cell plan (Verizon) ... have no landline, it has worked out GREAT for our situation!!!

I have no regrets!

My husband has been wanting to do this, but until/unless all of the members of our house have a cell phone, I won't not have a house phone, I won't agree to it. Our DD doesn't have one and it would cost us more to add her to our plan than leaving the home phone on.
911 service and quick response is another reason I would hesitate.
Finally, there's so many times the cell phones have dead batteries, have been left at friends or at school, broken, etc. that I just don't feel comfortable having no home phone.
I know alot of people do it, but I won't be on the list, at least not for a long time.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies! You've convinced me to do it. No need to spend $30 a month on something I rarely use. :thumbsup2

I am still on the fence about it. I want to save the money every month, and it's like we never use our land line. The only thing we get is telemarketers and wrong numbers. I just have this odd emotional attachment.

OP, if your cell phone only is good for 15 minutes, what do you do when you are put on hold? Just imagine phoning WDW for your reservations and you are put on hold for 20 minutes or more! Hey, it could happen.

I think this is the thing we are going to try. Basically I thought we buy another handset and then program it for our cell to go through line, kind of like a landline cell phone I guess. We're on the verge too.
