I currently have a home phone through Time Warner Cable & a cell phone through AT&T. I'm thinking about canceling my home phone to save money. I have a decently-priced cell plan with plenty of minutes available. My cellular reception at home isn't great, but it's good enough to make & receive short phone calls (<15 minutes each). Since I don't spend hours talking on the phone like I did when I was a teenager, that should be fine. I know it's a generational thing, but the thought of not having a home phone is just so strange. I need some encouragement from my Budget Board friends.

Thanks,
Shelli

Canceling landlines is very common now. We never had a phone installed when we moved into our new place. The only thing we had to adapt was changing to wireless monitoring for our alarm system, which the alarm company can do easily.

I am thinking about doing this too.... I have a very basic phone service & it costs me $28.00 a month.. We are never home & we use our cell phones for everything.... I don't know why I keep putting it off.... I could be using the $28.00 a month for DISNEY :) :thumbsup2

We cancelled our home phone over a year ago........not regretted it since. We have ATT too.

We are in the same boat as you. We got new smartphones as gifts for Christmas and we haven't used our home phone since then. We did finally call and downgrade the service to just a basic phone (no long distance, no features, etc.), so now it is only $17/month.

And even though I haven't missed it and haven't used it in 2 months, I'm still hesitant to cancel it completely. Maybe when we go 6 months without needing or using it, I'll be convinced. :goodvibes

Oh God! We have been without a house phone for at least 6 years now!
Me abd DH found it cheaper to each have a phone and a third cell for the house. The kids don't use phones like we do- they were IM'ing on the computer. I also got ALL my voicemail.
As they started driving we got my son his own and then when the youngest got her license she took the house phone.
We have unlimited texting and plenty of minutes. Verizon- we don't use minutes to talk to each other. \
So easy to keep in touch with the kids.

I want to add, after my mother passd, my dad was never home. He would get his messages at 11 when he went to bed- too late to call anyone then and he was at work the nxt day. He was so pround of himself when we took him to get his cell phone. We got a simple one-big numbers. My niece would check his voicemails and erase the old ones for im. He cut the cord too! And he was in his mid 70's!

Here is one disadvantage. Most people carry their cell phones with them everywhere. If you lose your cell phone, break it or have it stolen and there is no landline in the house, there is no way for anyone to contact you until you get a new phone.

We've been without a landline since we switched from dialup to cable modem - that was a long time ago.

Don't miss it a bit - in fact, not having telemarketing calls makes it so worth it alone!

I have a landline and intend to keep it. There's not much difference in price to drop it and I feel better having it in case of emergency. Check with your cell phone carrier of 911 calls can be tracked to your home location.
That's the main reason I keep my landline.

We cancelled our landline a couple months ago, and don't regret it. We were able to save about $30/month this way.

The one downside I've run into so far is that when I need to call tech support for my cell phone (which might require rebooting my phone during the call), I need to either borrow somebody's cell phone, or do it from work where I have a landline. But so far that's no big deal.

I'll try to always keep a landline for 911 or long term power outages.

Plus we get our internet as DSL through AT&T. We don't subscribe to cable.

We didn't cut the home phone entirely, but we did switch to Vonage. I love my cell phone, but regular phones have a much better connection and we often make calls overseas and to Mexico. The Vonage plan we have runs $30 a month and includes unlimited worldwide long distance and voicemails are digitally transcribed and emailed to me. I get notice within 10 minutes no matter where I am of someone leaving a message.

I have been considering cancelling my landline as well. I only talk on it occasionally so I am wasting that $30 a month. My mom ordered Magic Jack years ago and never used it so I got it from her to try before cancelling my landline. You just plug it into the USB on your computer and plug your regular phone into it and it works great! The quality is just as good as the landline minus the $30 a month I was paying for that!

if the power goes out you can always charge your phone in the car or at work. If your phone breaks- at Verizon anyway- they can ship me a new one the next day. Ask me how I know... try it- you can always go back.

We cancelled ours a couple years ago. The only time I regret it is when DH forgets to take his cell off silent when he gets home from work and I cant get him to answer!
