Wanna good laugh??

So being Military... I had to make an appt. with the "family doctor" and today was the soonest that I could get in. So I went in and he was looking at my foot and said that "There is deffently something wrong..... but it doesn't seem like a broken bone." He thinks that it might be the tendon and he thinks the tendon is torn. He wants me to stay off of it for a bit longer and see if it starts feeling better, if it doesn't, then I get to go to the orthopaedic doctor.

But before I can go to the orthopaedic doctor, I have to wait for my referral which could take 3-10 days :confused3 what is one to do!

I am hoping that it starts to feel better so I don't have to go. He did give me a "boot" to wear instead of that "shoe" and it does feel better sitting here with the boot on than it did in the shoe!

No luck. He did say he would put me in a wheelchair to keep me off of it. YEAH, like that is going to work, since I wouldn't be able to reach anything while in the chair............................. I did call a rental place, but they "don't have any at this time." So I am just using the cruches and hoping, crawling around. What ever works hey!

I do have to say that the kids (3-5-10-13) have been wonderful helpers:love: but the dog keeps sitting in the way:rotfl2:

I feel your pain...twice. DS tripped over the vacuum sweeper cord and broke his big toe. Didn't kick anything, just broke it by tripping.

Dealing with Military (aka government ran) medical does/don'ts and the hurry up and wait - You have all my sympathies. While DH was in the Army and stationed in Panama, DH broke his ankle and it took almost three weeks to see an orthopeadic doctor. Wore a boot for a while, then a cast, did something else, then into another cast. He broke his ankle at the end of July and he was still dealing with issue, wearing a cast, when I had our son in FEBRUARY. It was a nightmare. And 13 years later, he still has problems with that ankle.

OMG:scared1:
That is just terrible. I broke my ankle yrs ago myself, in 4 places even. I can't imagine waiting 3 weeks to be able to see an OD. The ankle is the weakest bone in the entire body. And once you break it no matter how quick you get it set/surgery you will always have problems with it. This was told to me by my OD who was a retired Admiral/aircraft carrier surgeon. I've lost count of how many yrs ago i broke it, probably around 10 give or take. But my ankle is never 100% and I still have the plate and screws in it. I spent almost 10 weeks in the cast and another 9 in PT after that. That year sucked.

This hurry up and wait stinks!

I would have to say that I think last night was probably the worst yet...... and I took a vicodin before bed, I had just been taking ibuprofen but thought that I would like a good night sleep... well I didn't get it. I actually ended up getting up in the middle of the night and taking some ibuprofen (since it was to near wake up time to take more vicodin)...........

Man, I wish I would just start to feel better. My foot is truning a nice shade of purple now... hopefully it's just brused and nothing else. I guess I wait a few more days and if it's not getting better then we go from there.

Thanks

 There are a bunch of places that you can rent the scooters online. They ship to you ASAP for free and include a lable for you to ship it back.

Here is just one: http://www.roll-a-bout.com/rentals.html It is the company my dr recommended.

No prescription needed. You can also find other companies by searching for "knee scooter" in google.

SO sorry about your toe!! :sad1: A few years back my Akita (very big) "stood up" to look out the front door that I was answering and he came down on my big toe -- yep -- broke it. Had to wear sandals for a while. ugh. :sad2:

When I have had to take pain killers, I've found that taking the narcotic, waiting 2 hours and taking ibuprophen, waiting 2 hours and taking narcotic, etc. works best for controlling the pain.

I never broke my big toe, but I've broken 2 other toes. I was in nowhere near as much pain as you are. Something else has got to be wrong, unless big toes just hurt more.

The first time I broke a toe was at my birthday party when I was in college. I was standing at the table, watching my friends play quarters. I was barefoot because one of my friends was using the birthday girl's pumps to drink his beer. Another friend bounced her chair toward me and came down on my toe. OUCH!

The second time, I was in Puerto Rico. DH and I had just climbed down the hill to a waterfall. He refused to go into the water, but I wanted to go into it. My foot slipped out from under me and I kicked into a rock wall. Worst part was that I had to put my shoe on to walk a mile back up the hill to the car. DH had no sympathy for me because he didn't want to go to the waterfall in the first place. I have a picture of my foot, taken the next day on the beach. My toe was huge and purple.

I didn't go to the ER either time. #1, it didn't hurt in any excruciating way and #2, I know that they don't do anything for broken toes.

Good luck with your outcome.

It's ok... you can laugh at me. Everyone else is so I thought I would share!

Lastnight I broke my toe :confused3 no laughing matter hey?!?!

Well everyone is getting a laugh out of it, maybe it's the story about how it happenen!

Last night just before 11pm I was folding laundry and I heard my daughters door (she is 3) thinking she was going to need help to go to the bathroom I went to RUN up the stairs...

Well I fell up the stairs, how does one do that? I kicked the step and fell up them after that. The pain was SO bad that it took my breath away! Finally after getting my breath back I went to the top of the stairs and looked towards my daughters door, where I see my 5 year old son standing there with his pants down! What, now I am thinking he has gone to the restroom somewhere in my daughters room (he didn't) but I am looking around and my husband is helping our sleep walking son! I hobble back to the top of the stairs and can hardly move.

I scoot down stairs and am sitting on the floor, not knowing to laugh or cry and my hubby is looking at my foot and toe. There is a lump on my foot and the pain in my toe is killing me, so he says that he is going to take me to the ER!

Out come is a broken big toe and my foot is shifted, brused, but not broken!

OUCH!!

Gotta take my oldest to volleyball now..............

Sorry to hear about this, but you can feel free to laugh at me too then. Not once, but twice I have gotten sesamoiditis in my left foot. Sesamoiditis is inflammation around the sesamoid bones under the ball of your foot. I have done it twice- exactly three years apart- from taking pictures. I am a photographer and take A LOT of photos. This last time I was at Disney for 3 days and took 1600 pictures. Balancing on my toes to get the perfect shot, took it's toll on my poor foot. I am now in a walking boot for the next 6 weeks and have to go to physical therapy for the next 4. My podiatrist told me that I am still the only patient that entire practice has had that has gotten my injury from taking pictures. This just stinks because it is my busy season with family pictures in the fall and for the holidays. In fact, I had a photo session last night and had to hobble my way through it- boy was it sore when we were finished!

Okay, maybe not really laughing at you, more just a little snicker. But I do feel your pain. Crutches stink. GET ONE OF THESE!http://www.rolleraid.com/patients.html

I have one right now for post surgery and it is the best thing in the world! And you can move much faster! And once you are used to it you can really be almost "hands free" in the kitchen and it is just well worth the rental money.

Call you local Medical Supply stores and ask if they have knee scooters. The swivel wheels are worth the extra money! If you can't find one locally you can get the online for rent-- they ship for free and then you ship it back for free. So great!

If you want more info on the knee scooter PM me. I am telling you it is the best thing. Especially with your little kids and busy life.

My mom rented one of these just after her ankle surgery this past spring- she said it was a lifesaver!!! Although, she did tip it over one time and hurt her knee a bit, so do be careful if you do get one.

I'm thinking that there is more wrong than just the toe... the pain runs up from the toe to the top of my foot and down through my foot.

I go to another doctor on Tuesday.

I was ready to order a knee scooter, but thought with the kids they would probably end up getting hurt on it. Hubby said that I probably don't really need it anyhow!

My toe/foot is feeling a little better. Yesterday I was able to walk some on it, with the boot on... but think I walked a bit to much on it as it was KILLING me lastnight. Today it's hurting still, so I am using the cruches or the cane to get around. Trying to take it as easy as possible... but you know how being a mom is!

Anyhow I am hoping that when I go to the doctor on Tuesday they can see if there is more wrong with it, or if it is just brused. I'm also hoping they can tell me what can make it feel better, if it doesn't start feeling better soon!

Thanks!

If you're walking on that foot with the boot, why not try one crutch instead of 2? That way you'll be bearing some weight on the crutch instead of on your foot and you're underarms won't hurt so much because you're not bearing all the weight on them.

Ugggggggg. Ok, I'm not laughing anymore........ I went to the specialest today and am now waiting for them to get back with me to tell me when I will have to go and get an MRI done.

I went in and the DR. looked at my foot and asked me a few questions and said that we should get new X-rays. So I got the x-rays done and he comes back in and is looking at them and says there is at least one fracture in my foot. But he is also worried about the cartlige (sp) so that is the reason for the MRI. So now we wait some more!

As of right now I am to stay off of my foot. NO WIGHT at all on the foot and to keep it in the boot, elvated and iced.

So I tell him that I would like a knee scooter and he says that would be a great idea...

Well trying to find one around here is crazy... I did find one place that isn't to far that has them, but they don't take ins. so I would have to pay out of pocket for it, now I don't totally mind doing that, but when will I really be able to use it. Our house is set up in a way that I won't be able to really use it around here......... and I have deffently not been going out and about with the pain that I have been in... so not sure if I should pick one up or not...

just UGGGGGGGGGGGGG. I can't stand not being able to do the things that I do everyday to keep the house working and clean! It is DRIVING ME CRAZY!

That's all for the update, hopefully the MRI will be done within the week and I can let you know what is really going on!

Oh, I'm so sorry about that.

Might I suggest that you pick up the Twilight Saga books to read, or the Southern Vampire series about Sookie Stackhouse upon which the HBO show, True Blood is based. Both series are very good and will take you away from your misery for a while.

I hope that everything goes fast for you and that you're on the road to recovery very soon!

Haven't been on for a while... my foot is still KILLING me! I went in on Friday for a MRI and I meet with the Doctor on Tuesday morning to go over what the MRI says.

I do think keeping off of it and keeping it up has helped...... some..... I still have the times that it just hurts so much that I don't know what to do!

And as for passing the time, I have been making blankets and bags and such. I have done some reading, but it's hard to read and keep an eye (and ear) on what the kids are doing!

The oldest (13) and the 5 year old have been the most helpful, the 3 and 10 year old not so much! But they have all been willing to do what is asked. It's crazy how much you miss your foot when you can't use it!

Still waiting for that knee scooter.......... don't know if that will happen or not. I think Hubby will go get one if the "stay off of it for 4 weeks" still stands after the MRI reading!

Well I fell up the stairs, how does one do that? I kicked the step and fell up them after that. .........
-------------------

The same thing happened to a neighbor up here at the lake a number of years ago when he was popping in to say hello to me.. Fell UP the steps and broke his toe!! I felt SOOOOOO bad for him..

And I'm not laughing at you.. :(

Hope you're doing better.. :goodvibes

I also broke my toe 6 months ago. It was the toe next to the little toe. A large candle in a jar fell off the top of a shelf (5 feet fall) and landed on my bare foot. I started screaming which isn't like me at all, then asked for a bowl because I was going to throw up from the pain. (my family still laughs about that part). It was broken in 3 places and my entire foot turned black and blue. I worked three 12 hour shifts (as an L & D nurse) with just a shoe cover on my foot because I couldn't wear my shoe, and finally couldn't stand the pain. My doctor was amazed that I did that much walking on it, put me in a shoe and wouldn't let me work for 2 weeks. Would have gone back to work after one week, but got up in the middle of the night and stubbed it on my husbands steel toed work boots that he didn't put away. grrr. It's been 6 months and it still hurts sometimes and still has a purple bump on top. My foot doctor told me it could take up to a year to totally heal. I can feel your pain. Hope your foot isn't broken along with the toe.

2 quick long story shorts....lol
I broke my pinky toe once...dropped one of those HUGE cans of pineapple toppings at the ice cream shop on it... OUCh... nothin they can do...

And...once, I smashed my finger in the door... and felt sick to my stomache.. as I was headed to the bathroom to throw up from the pain, I passed out, and on my way to the ground, I hit my head on the kitchen stool... Turns out I 'snapped' my neck... and had to wear a neckbrace... This was a Friday. When I went to school that Monday with the brace on...everyone asked what happened.... "I smashed my finger in the door" is how it started... LOL

Oh my goodness....you really went through a lot when you smashed your finger in the door. LOL. I closed my own thumb in the door a few months ago & it hurt soooo bad!! My thumb was throbbing & twitching back and forth. I couldn't control it.....it was like a cartoon character when they get hurt! :scared1:

I was looking for this thread a while ago, because the day after I read it...I broke MY little toe. I was six hours from home in a hotel room alone with my two small children. I snagged the little toe on a corner. I actually heard it break.

Luckily I've been buddy tapping it and it's getting me through. The urgent care center told me to go to an orthopedic doc, but I figured that I could just buddy tape it.

The second the toe broke...after the explative that went through my mind....I thought of this thread.
